FE Technical Forum / Jay's valve covers

Normal speed, 900rpm cold idle, 80psi oil pressure, mild restriction to the top end, .090 if I recall.

and in slow motion, because it's super cool

I need to wire in the LED's and also get studs cut as my bolts are too long and there is a lil oil leak on account of it.

A person asked me to build this for him and I haven't heard a peep from him in over a month.
Off to the auction block it goes.
I wouldn't say it's "restored"  it's just a soft refinishing of the main bits, I also redid the zinc plating and used a variety of dichromates trying to mirror the original look.

Price?  I dunno, $400 sound fair?
It's sitting in my shop boxed up.
I tested it out, drove around for a lil bit, no leaks, no bad spots, no issues whatsoever, just a nice carb.

Great carburetor. I rebuilt and detailed it, made sure it's perfect. Should be bolt on and with a few idle screw adjustments will be ready to roll. Mild cloudiness in the aluminum. Still looks great tho.

$400 shipped

Due to the request made in another thread I'll be detailing some plating and other fun here.

This time I've been seriously busy..... work has been recalling me a lot, so I haven't had more than a few days at home.  Worse yet, when I did get home I'd immediately get a call that I am "on notice to ship out with 12 hours notice" so it's been hard to prioritize my projects.

That said, I'll repost a carburetor I did awhile ago.
Just an 1850, was gross.   I cleaned to perfection, drilled and tapped all bleeds as follows:
-2 Primary idle air bleeds
-2 high speed air bleeds
-4 emulsion bleeds
-2 power valve channel restriction bleeds
-2 secondary idle air bleeds
-2 secondary high speed air bleeds
-2 idle feed restrictions
-2 metering plate restriction
-2 idle feed restrictions for the secondary

I also added .140 downleg boosters
Everything got beadblasted than back to the ultrasonic cleaner, than hand cleaned, dipped in a pickle, water washed and than dipped in a dichromate to seal the metal.  Replated linkage and hardware as needed and redid the base plate like I wanted it.  I use SS plates that are a good bit thinner.

I've got 400 miles on this setup and it's probably the best 1850 based carb I've built.  All metal appears to be holding out with no signs of fading.

I noticed NOS Galaxie trim that looked pretty awesome.

I know Jay lives in Minneasodastan, I can only assume three or four other people are up that way and lived through the winter.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Torque wrench preferences
« on: November 27, 2016, 06:38:29 PM »
So..... my trusty ole micrometer torque wrench finally became not so trusty.
Sadly this happened on an important bolt.
It is a 50-150ft lb wrench, and apparently it works perfectly until you hit 100ft lbs and then won't click anymore.

I have a perfect inch/lb dial torque wrench, a 50-150ft lb beam wrench.  I don't like using the beam wrench on everything tho as it's hard to see the needle when going over 100ft lb (ie, I'm weak and shaky)

Anyway, my choice for a replacement:

What do you use?
Any issues/experiences with my choice?

Thanks,
Dp

FE Technical Forum / Cooling upgrades
« on: July 30, 2016, 01:22:32 PM »
I'd normally post on the FE forum, but it is looking a little dangerous there today....  perhaps the heat is getting to folks.
Thankfully here in southern Georgia it isn't that hot.  Heck I still have jeans, boots, a tshirt and my button down shirt over that.  But it is hot enough I had to break out the large straw hat.

So speaking of heat.  My new engine build isn't thrilled with the 100 degree days either.

Situation is as such:
Engine is a 446 stroker, which I've posted about plenty recently.  Cooling system is a stock waterpump, 185 thermostat, Griffin radiator, dual flex-a-lite fans rated at 1100cfms and draw 8 amps, pushing and mounted in front of radiator.
Timing is 18 initial and 32 total in by 2850rpms or therebouts.
The fan's barely kept the old engine cool enough, and that was 100-150hp less of an engine.  I knew the fan's would be marginal at best, but I was mostly concerned with getting the engine running last time I was home.... figure I'd work out the details later.

-When running hard out on the country roads the engine is running peachy.  180 and lower, even 170 which kicks off my fans.
When pulling into town the engine is obviously overheating, gauges immediately shoots past 200 and engine begins to idle badly and I need to keep a lil throttle in order to keep her from stalling.  When parking car, overflow tank is full and pushing some coolant onto the ground.

This issue seems straightforward, the fans aren't doing their job well enough.  Solution I will pursue is changing them with two 12inch Spal fans which are rated at 1277cfms and draw 14amps.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/spu-ix-30101505

Yes I know pulling is more efficient, but I like pusher fans because I have more room there, and I like the appearance better.
I suspect the stock waterpump is suffcient, and also suspect the Radiator is up to task.  (feel free to comment on either)

Question
My painless harness has a 20 amp relay for each fan.  (actually it has three relays for some reason).  Each relay says 12v 2X20amps.  I'm not fluent in electrical, so I assume this is 20amps, but I guess it could mean 40amps?
Is this sufficient for the task or do I need to upgrade the relays?

-Next issue
Due to running a radiator that has a radiator cap, and also running a surge tank (mostly for looks to be honest) I have two radiator caps.  I put a 14psi on the surge tank and a 7psi on the radiator.  I used the 7psi cap because I didn't want to overpressurize a surge tank.
My issue with this is that when parking and all coolant goes back into the system there is 4inches of air in the radiator, which isn't right since I have the surge tank.... so I obviously didn't think that through too well.
Plan for the future is to put the 14psi or higher on the radiator so it never leaks and putting the lower pressure cap on the surge tank and running the overflow hose from the surge tank.  No coolant leaks in or out of the engine are apparent.
Question
Is this a decent plan to keep the radiator topped off or does anyone have a better idea?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot!
Drew

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 63-64 Galaxie rear shackles
« on: July 23, 2016, 01:18:59 PM »
On mine, shackles are fine, the Shackle hanger is bent on one side and touching the frame.

I was considering replacing the whole works with either an aftermarket hanger that goes into the frame to do away with the bent piece.
I doubt it's possible to rebend the piece.

Any other thoughts? experiences? etc

Planning slicks and caltracs in the near future, so I'll be pulling the rear end anyway.  Would like to address the issue at that time.

Dunno what else to say.
Thanks to all those involved, especially Brent Lykins, Ben Hertel, FERoadster, et el.

Leaving for work in a few days.  Only part I lack is starter.  (well, and I'll pull the guts outta my c6 and stuff them in an FE case).

I'll be home in June, hope to get test fitting and cam break-in done at that time.

Thanks again to all that helped with parts, advice, or both.

FE Technical Forum / Balancer query
« on: April 28, 2016, 07:13:00 PM »
I've never used a performance harmonic balancer, so not 100% sure on what is normal

From crank snout to outer edge of balancer I've got .190  (so crank sits just inside of balancer).
Only .035 between water pump pulley and balancer.... seems a bit tight.

Do I need a smaller water pump pulley or is the balancer not all the way on?
(I do indeed have a tool to install balancer btw, it felt like it bottomed out)

Many thanks,
Drew

FE Technical Forum / Variety of build questions
« on: March 04, 2016, 12:21:05 PM »
445 being built, aluminum BBM heads.

-Torque for spark plugs and intake?
I currently have the plugs torqued to 13 ft lbs, intake to 15 ft lbs

-Where to find oil fill cap for manifold?

-where to find a good inline 3/8 x 3/8 PCV for back of manifold?  (I currently have 3/8 barb from manifold)

-BJ/BK carbs or dual Quickfuels?
I like the idea of adjusting the QF's, but absolutely love the look of BJ/BK reproductions.  Just looking for any first had experience on this one.  From looking at previous builds, it just seems like folks have more trouble getting the Qf's tuned.

-Anything wrong with the idea of breaking in a new engine with a known good 4v carb and just blocking off the other 4v holes?

Appreciated as always any input.
Drew
