Non-FE Discussion Forum / Brought home a new "Farm Find"
« on: June 20, 2019, 05:46:36 AM »
My cousin has decided she is going to sell off her old family farm and parked for approx 40 years behind the main barn was this... A  1952 F6 V8 Mercury flathead dump truck( missing the dump box but still has the hydraulics). 16,000# GVW, 4 speed, 2 speed rear 5.83/8.11 and PTO driven hydraulics.

Her grandfather bought it new and it came out of the Buffalo, NY Ford plant. She said it's mine if I can get it before the junk man gets to it. A couple phone calls later to some very helpful friends that work for beer and food. Several hours later we had the ol' girl home.  My one buddy noticed the Allstate Reman tag so we checked the oil and it looked like it was just poured in. So we decided to put a breaker bar on the front and see if she turns. No hang ups or catches and spun nice. So in goes a battery and some fresh gas in the bowl of the Ford 94. Filed the points. Hit the key and cranked it over about a dozen times and the old flathead lit! I was impressed. Next step is working on the fuel supply and getting new tires for the front and replacing the split rims. I'd like to find a newer rim that will fit the bolt pattern. I've got a soft spot for these old big trucks.  Now if I can only get her to come off the '65 fastback Mustang 289 auto in the barn....

With spring finally coming in Upstate NY I decided to get my Galaxie ready for the road. I pulled the plug on the oil pan and noticed a lot of fur on the end of the magnet. I cut the oil filter apart and noticed bearing material. So out with the engine and I tore it down to find all of the cam bearings trashed. The center 3 more so than 1 and 5. All on the load side. The engine never gave any signs of a issue the last time I had it out. Oil pressure was always great, No odd noises and it ran 11.14 @ 118mph. This engine has approx 2500 miles on it and 30 or so passes on it. I believe these bearings were Clevites and the cam spun with no issues when I installed it. I installed the bearings with the oil hole at the 4-5 o'clock position. There is no discoloration on the cam journals or bearing showing any starvation of oil. But the bearing material just appears to be delaminating. The rods and mains look beautiful with only a few slight scratches from debris. I will check the cam for straightness and see how it spins with new bearings. This is a flat tappet engine so I'm not running a lot of spring pressure. Not really sure where else to look or what to put the blame on. Any thoughts are appreciated.. Thanks. Fred.

FE Technical Forum / Need help locating rings....
« on: March 21, 2019, 06:35:07 PM »
I have a set of JE super stock legal 390 pistons. I bought them used and I am trying to get a set of rings for them.

-The top ring is a Dykes style ring that measures. .062" (1/16").

-The second is a low tension conventional style ring that measures. .077"... So 5/64" or 2mm?

-Oil ring is a standard 3/16"

-Bore is 4.090"

I would like to stay with the Dykes style low tension ring combo.

Any help is appreciated!

FE Technical Forum / Perfromer RPM or single plane...Any thoughts??
« on: March 01, 2019, 06:04:56 AM »
I'm currently building a '31 Model A to go racing this season. The car with me in it will weigh 2800lbs, 4 speed, 29" tire and a gear ratio between 4.56 - 4.88, I havent decided yet. I'm not going to have my 428 built in time to go in the car so I'm freshening up a 390 I used to run in my galaxie that went 12.4 @ 104. It is a .020" over 390, 11:1 comp, with a Comp 294s cam installed on a 104 ICL, Angle cut and ported C1AE heads with CJ valves. And a port matched Performer RPM. I'm wondering if swapping the intake while I have it apart will hurt or help me. I was looking at either a Victor or a trick flow single plane. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Fred.

FE Technical Forum / Running out of fuel on the big end..
« on: February 22, 2019, 10:15:17 AM »
Looking for others input on what they are running for a fuel system on their drag cars. I'm currently running a Holley blue, 8AN line with a in line filter, Holley regulator set @ 7psi to a pro systems 1000cfm carb on a victor. The engine is a 451" stroked 390 with CNC edelbrocks from BarryR, .700" lift solid cam with duration around 265-270@.050. I cannot get any color on my plugs going through the traps no matter how much jet I throw at it. I've check and found no vacuum leaks. The car goes 11.14 @ 118mph. The car is a '64 galaxie weighing about 3650 with me in it. C4 trans with a 5500 stall converter. 4.20 gears and 29" tall hoosiers. It goes 1.50 in the 60' and high 6's in the 1/8. It seems like I'm loosing something on the top end and I believe it to be fuel related. I have good color on the Autolite race plugs cruising to the track @ 3500-4000 rpm. I'm going to be tearing the fuel system apart and sending the carb back to pro systems for a check up. Any thoughts are appreciated. I'd like to get things figured out and make it to the Reunion and try and get a 10.90 out of the car.  Thanks..Fred
