FE Technical Forum / Re: 428 FE hydraulic roller link bar lifters
« on: February 12, 2024, 01:44:15 PM »
Both Howards and Lunati lifters are made by Morel.  They're pretty much all I use for SBF/FE builds.

Any preference to the maximum effort vs street lifters?

FE Technical Forum / 428 FE hydraulic roller link bar lifters
« on: February 12, 2024, 12:12:47 PM »
Hi folks,

I need a sanity check here:

I'm currently running a set of Lunati hydraulic roller link bar lifters (72336-16) in a mild 428 with a Lunati roller cam (559/559 lift 211/219 duration @.50 on a 112 LSA). I had around 30,000 miles on this motor before it was pulled due to a keyway failing.

https://www.lunatipower.com/street-performance-hydraulic-roller-lifters-ford-v8-352-428-370-460-set-of-16.html

I had a set of Lunati roller lifters fail a couple years ago on a hot 306 windsor I built, one of the link bar pins failed and let the lifters spin which wiped the cam. Granted, that engine saw high RPM quite often and I had 70k~ miles on that build.

The 428 is now rebuilt, but I'm a little hesitant to reuse the FE lunati lifters I have because of that other failure.

What is everyone running for roller lifters? I'm thinking of going with Howards, but there are several options. My understanding is that the Lunati lifters I have are rebranded Howard's street lifters.

Howards street:

My current Lunati:

https://www.lunatipower.com/street-performance-hydraulic-roller-lifters-ford-v8-352-428-370-460-set-of-16.html

I see that Howards makes a set of "maximum effort" lifter for the FE- has anyone used them?

I'm assuming that I would need to get new pushrods as well, it sounds like the 91261 lifters are shorter than the 91169.

FE Technical Forum / 428 FE SFI balancer?
« on: November 14, 2023, 12:07:04 PM »
Hi folks-

Any recommendations on an SFI approved balancer for a 428? Stock crank/rods, non SCJ.

My machinist advised against the fluidamper units. My professional products one kicked rocks when the crank key way failed.

Set of polished cobra lemans valve covers for FE. They cleared the Harland Sharp rocker arms on my 428. I bought another set in black wrinkle finish so I no longer need these.

Asking $175 + shipping.

Please PM if interested. Thanks!

FE Technical Forum / Metallic oil after rebuild?
« on: September 23, 2019, 01:39:08 PM »
I have maybe 6000 miles on a a rebuilt 428. New bearings and rings- the machine shop built the short block. I'm on my 3rd (?) oil change and noticed that the oil still has a slight shimmer when I run my finger through it.

It's a fresh rebuild, the first rebuild ended in a chewed up rod bearing after 200 miles.

Running a hydraulic roller cam with HS roller rockers on Edelbrock aluminum heads w/ restrictors. Oil pump is a precision pumps HV unit, I get around 17-20 PSI oil pressure hot idle and around 62-64 PSI hot at 2800 RPM on the freeway. Oil pressure does not seem to have changed during this 6000 mile span. I do remember using a liberal amount of the ARP assembly lube when I build the long block.

I've been using Rotella 10w30 and a motorcraft oil filter this entire time. Should I just keep changing the oil in shorter intervals?

Jeez, so harsh. I personally love what they do- much better than all the other shows airing on TV.

FE Technical Forum / What did my 428 come out of?
« on: April 09, 2019, 10:06:01 PM »
I'm curious, any way to tell what my 428 came out of? I can't find a VIN stamped anywhere on it.

C6ME-A
6M14 date code
"A" scratch on back
1U crank

FE Technical Forum / Spark plugs for 428
« on: March 24, 2019, 11:26:39 PM »
What is everyone using? I've got Edelbrock heads with Autolite 3924 plugs. I'm tempted to use an NGK plug a heat range colder. (Gap recommendations?)

Specs:

428 .030 over
Edelbrock heads (10.5:1 compression)
Lunati Voodoo hydraulic roller cam (.559/.559 lift 211/219 duration @ .50 112 LSA)
Edelbrock RPM intake
Holley 750 DP
Pertronix III distributor and coil

Engine is in a '68 fastback with a 4 speed.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 428 overheating at idle
« on: March 17, 2019, 10:53:58 AM »
Okay guys, just following up- the overheating issue seems to be solved.

The replacement heavy duty Hayden 2765 fan clutch seemed to help a little bit, but the temperature still eventually crept up. I added some Water Wetter as a last ditch effort and maybe got a 2-3 degree improvement, but again the car would eventually get hotter than I'd like at idle. I ended up ordering a 17" high output Derale electric fan and a SPAL thermal relay kit. SPAL includes both a 30 and 40 amp fuse in their kit along with eyelet connectors, a fuse holder, all the wiring, thermostatic switch, and a bunch of other bits and pieces. The fan pulls around 23 amps- I found that the initial power spike on fan startup was too high for the recommended (per Derale) 30 amp fuse, so a 40 amp fuse was used instead. I attribute this to ditching the low speed setting and wiring the fan so that it immediately goes to high speed. The fan kicks in at 195* and shuts off at 185*. Problem solved!

The fan is off almost all of the time and only comes on at idle when needed. It's significantly quieter than the mechanical fan and I don't have to worry about losing any fingers. One thing I did notice however is how difficult it is to get hot air OUT of the engine bay as it takes longer for the fans to bring the temperature down with the hood closed. I'll try and get some pictures of the setup later today.

I took the fastback on a rather arduous cruise with a few mustang buddies yesterday and she ran flawlessly!

I just installed an Edelbrock mechanical fuel pump on my 428- it had holes for 3/8" NPT fittings.

Hi everyone!

I've been down in Southern California for school and haven't had a chance to make the 300+ mile drive to work on the 428. I'll be back home in a couple weeks to screw around with it :). I've ordered a couple different fan clutches, hopefully one of them will work/continue to work!

If all goes well, I'll be bringing it back down with me for the rest of the semester (and the Fabulous Fords Forever show in Anaheim).

FE Technical Forum / Re: 428 bearing clearances
« on: February 21, 2019, 01:13:59 PM »
I just called the machine shop to confirm the sizes, they said .0015 on the mains and .0020 on the rods. The motor has Clevite 77 bearings in it. If there was an issue, would I have experienced some kind of oil pressure issue by now? Should I switch from 10w30 to a thinner oil?
