I ran a .031" quench on a 390 with no problems. I did put a custom cam in it to enable me to run mid-grade gasoline. It had 10.7CR and 81DCR.

I spent over $200 with Damper Doctors in California to get my Balancer rebuilt. They sent me the wrong on and then said they threw my old one away. They finally got me the right style and I couldn't make the car run right. I checked the timing mark and it was 10 degrees retarded at TDC. I bought a new one made in Taiwan from AutoKrafters for $100 and it was perfect. Remember that name "Damper Doctor" and avoid it.

I've run an Edelbrock water pump for the last 8 years without any trouble. On my Edelbrock RPM Intake, RPM Heads and Water Pump I used Clear Engine Paint. Good for aluminum. They look as good now as they did in 2015.

On my Bob weight Card it just has one entry for Piston & Pins. I wouldn't think the same piston from the same manufacture would be that much different. Jay Brown probably said it best.

If I were you (not knowing a lot about engines) I'd hang onto every word people like Ross Bullock has to say. He gave me advice on building an engine years ago. I built a 410 engine that produced 385hp @ 4600rpm, uses 87 octane gas for my 57 Fairlane. It's the big Fairlane (@4300 lbs w/me) and I consistantly ran the quarter mile in 14.3 seconds on 215 X 15 street tires. I've put about 35,000 miles on it so far and it's never been apart. When I got thru drag racing I put the engine in my 63 Galaxie.

A person needs more information to figure CR. From what you describe I'd say you'll need rocket fuel for it to run. The Static CR won't tell you much as the Cam will decide the DCR you run. The cam will decide when your valves close to enable compression in the cylinder. DCR stays with the engine through any rpm and is the most valuable tool to decide useable cubic inch of motor and what octane gas you'll have to run to keep it from pinging.

If you're going to spend $2000 on heads go ahead and buy a set of Edelbrock RPM heads. I've ran a set of those for about 10 years and they are a performance head.

I've got a windage tray in my 410 engine but I don't drag race it anymore. I got one in my 390 and don't drag race it. I really don't think I need them. If you drag race I'd think about leaving it in.

I'd like to know why the tapered push rods too. When I put my 410 together using Edelbrock heads I spaced the rocker arms out to where there was clearance in a few places. Been running that engine for years drag racing a cruising and never had a problem.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Eagle crankshaft and rod quality

I used the Eagle Crank and Rods in 2014 in a 57 Fairlane's built 410. The crank was good but my engine guy that balanced the engine didn't like the Rods. (He was famous for building rods for exotic engines). He resized them and I drag raced the engine for 4 years shifting at 5000 rpm. I then put the engine in my 63 Galaxie and it still runs great (street only). I wouldn't be afraid to use their crank, especially for street use.

Just a note: I've been told that to resurface a block (just a light cut to flatten the surface) you're going to see they have to shave .005-.007" of material off so the cutter works right. I know mine was resurface and the most I could get was .012" from top of piston to block with those pistons. And, I had a 4.05" bore and used a .027" MLS gasket w/4.08" hole opening. Keep that in mind because Cometic can give you whatever you want for the same price. Mines been running over 10 years with no problems. And, I wouldn't be afraid (at least I haven't had trouble) with stock rods and new bolts. Although I did use Eagle Crank and H-beam rods in my build.

If you use L2291 pistons and if the block has ever been resurfaced(-.007" for resurface) you'll have .010" from top of piston to top of block. Use the .027" Comatic MLS gasket and coat both sides with copper-coat. Depending on the cam you're using (for example I used a 268/268 comp cam) you'll get a engine with .037" quench running 9.6 CR / 7.9 DCR, which would be respectable and able to run 87/89 octane gas. Unless you plan on shaving .020 off a 10.4 second ET @ 7000 rpm's, I get rid of that solid lift cam and put a nice Hydraulic cam and lifters in it. Having a questionable rocker assembly is risky at most if you're looking for dependability. Sell that rocker assy to someone that likes working on their car along side of the road. Just my take. I like working on an engine once, I like driving all the time.

Where in the h-ll did you find a cross bolted 406. I'd make sure it had a HP on the side of the block. To your question: The answer is simple, you get gigantic head gaskets, cut valve reliefs in your pistons, get other pistons or get a cam with less lift. That's the only options I see. I ran a FE with a .031" quench for years but it only had a .500" valve lift.

Another guy on here referenced this fact. A bigger engine will get better gas mileage at highway speeds. If you have a 4000 lb. vehicle the load placed on the engine to pull that at 65-70 mph is higher on a smaller engine. In 1974 I bought a F100 with a 302 engine/automatic. It got 12 mpg around town and 12 mpg on a trip (speed limit 70 mph). My buddy got a 1975 Ford extended cab with a 460ci engine. He got 17 mpg on a trip. My 550 Honda motorcycle got 35 mpg going back and forth to work 50 miles away. I traded it for a 1300 6cyl Kawasaki with 120 hp and got 42 mpg  going back and forth to work. I learned early in life a small engine vs a large engine was no contest when it come to gas mileage pulling the same weight at 65-70 mph.

On an FE engine the base RPM that you can run is 1700 rpm (rpm in which you can mash the gas down in any gear without having to go to a lower gear). If you can keep your rpm between 1700 and 1850 rpm when cruising you'll get all kinds of gas mileage out of a FE. My 1957 Fairlane 500 with 390ci-315hp/5 speed Tremec TKO 600/3.50 True Trac and 27" rear tires gets over 21 mpg at 65-70mph. Around town in stop and go traffic is where nothing is going to shine. The transmission is where you get gas mileage.
