Title: Driveshaft recomendations
Post by: allrightmike on April 11, 2021, 07:45:50 AM
How much driveshaft (dia. & material) do I need. '60 Starliner, 427 around 450 HP, C6 Gearvenders OD so a shorter shaft if it matters. 411 gear, street use and as much rubber as will fit.

I'd check out the website of Inland Empire Driveline in Ca.  I got my Galaxie shaft from them and I know they have some rules of thumb for diameter and length, etc.  A quality product and service too!

Need to know what size u joints you have but more for compatibility. A chromoly shaft will be plenty strong and durable. 3" diameter is typical. Aluminum will be lighter and the driveshaft company will want diameter larger that 3" most likely. Could probably have the original shaft shortened but new stuff is nice. If you are near Chicagoland check out Suburban Driveline. They do great work.

The shop that is building mine offered different wall thicknesses for my consideration. They had .083, .093 or .095, ( I can’t recall exactly), and .125. The last shaft I had made was .083 wall. The new one will be the middle thickness.  The .125 might only be available in a diameter larger than 3”. The new shaft will be seamed steel. I’m going 1350 joints on each end. As stated above the aluminum ones tend to be bigger diameter. That may not always work with your driveshaft loop.

Carbon fiber is the cutting edge solution these days. I'm no expert but both Aluminum and carbon fiber are more prone to chips and dent damage from road debris etc... For racing the strongest and lightest option is the way to go if you have the $$$$. We are talking about a 450HP application here. Longevity might make folks a little shy to go full race since both are a premium over steel. Depends on any plans for future upgrades. Saying all that the Vette's have had carbon fiber stock from the factory for at least a few years now. Probably plenty examples of OEM aluminum driveshafts too. In my case I am only 250HP now if I am lucky. Nevertheless I went with a 3.5 chromoly shaft, 1350 U-joints and a Billet yoke in the diff. There could be an 800HP FE in my future so....

Thanks for the advice guys. I am set up for 1350 u-joints on both ends. Will check in with Inland Empire for details. Would like to go aluminum at 3" if possible as larger diameter will make it harder to plum for exhaust. Hoping the reduced length due to the Gearverders OD will allow more options.

Looks to be about the same length as an auto CJ Mustang which is something like 46 19/32".
