Title: Group buy-in on custom Scat forged cranks....
Post by: blykins on August 11, 2020, 03:06:06 PM
Need 5 guys to commit in order to get this one done.

$1895 for each crankshaft, BBC rod journals, up to 4.375" stroke.

It would probably take 6-8 weeks to get these completed, depending on how many raw forgings Scat has in stock.  I would have to have full payment of each one up front.  Since these are considered custom, if someone bailed, I'd be on the line for it.

Free shipping....

How 'bout I change my request to a pair of 2.1875" stroke cranks but allow Scat to combine the order into a single 4.375".... Ya know, for convenience.

Brent, I will take one of those crankshafts in 4.375" stroke with 2.200 rod journals as light as you can get it.  PM me or email for payment.  Joe-JDC

Ok, that's 5.

I will be emailing/PM'ing you guys individually for payment.

If anyone else sees this, I'll probably be placing the order with Scat on Monday/Tuesday, so there's still time to get in on it.

Could you ask about doing a 4.5 inch stroke with a 2.1 rod? I’m still kicking that one around....

4.375" is the longest stroke with a forging.  If you want 4.500", probably need to go billet.

Awesome! Now I can quit thinking about it,
Make mine the same as Joe’s, 4.375 and nice and light.

Are these the F-43 lightweight series?

They are lightweight, but not the F43 series.   That series is typically only available for small block, shorter stroke stuff.

Scat says they are finishing up the cranks right now.  Shouldn't be too much longer.

Received my Scat crankshaft today, and survived the handling Ok.  Thanks for the chance at the buy-in.  Joe-JDC

My crankshaft arrived today also. Box was a little beat up but no damage that I can see. A quick caliper inspection shows that it's what I ordered. Working on a long term storage solution now. Looks like I need to suspend it by the rear flange and add more grease/oil for 1-2 years of storage.

Thx!

Update from 10/1/20 - Today my local UPS driver asked "how was my crankshaft"? I happened to be outside this morning and he stopped his truck on the way out of the neighborhood to make sure everything was all good. Very nice of him. Car guys are still alive and well.

I am curious what these cranks weigh. Can one or more of you weigh them on a semi accurate scale? Some of the newer bathroom scales are pretty good. I have weighed several cranks and just want to see where these fall in. On the box label on the part number, does it end with -2 or -3, or something else? Did most get 4.375 stroke or did anyone get a 4.125 or 4.0 or 3.78??? It seems 4.25 is the most popular but sometimes it is fun to be different when given a choice. Thanks.

Sure. The 4.375" stroke crank measures 65.2 LBS including the box and packing materials. (Cardboard, foam, paper) I used my bathroom scale. Weight will change a lot based on the applications bob weight & balancing procedure.

My part number is 7-427-4375-PCG-33

7 = Custom Forged
427 = FE
4375 = 4.375"
PCG = PRO COMP (G = Gun Drilled Mains?)
33 = 2.200", 2.008", 6.7" (Rod journal and rod length)

Thanks for the info, but you are cheating LOL (just kidding). You need to take it out of the box and have a good look see anyway... then you can weigh the actual crank, not crated shipping weight, you know you want to take it out of the wrapper.

I don't have an accurate bathroom scale, mine started reading 10# high for some reason.  Here is the sheet that came with my Scat crankshaft yesterday.  Joe-JDC

Everyone got 4.375" this time around, but we can do any configuration between 3.780" and 4.375".  I've done these in 3.980", 3.780", etc., but you can make it whatever you want.  I've also done them with 2.100" journals, but when you get below the BBC journal,  the rods start getting real expensive.

If someone doesn't before Saturday I will weigh the one I boughy.  However, it's a carboard box with styrofoam and cardboard end caps, wrapped in paper.  Can't weigh much, and it's certainly noticeably lighter than the cast 4.25 ones I have

That's part of the reason why I detailed what the packaging was. So probably 65lbs for the raw crank as it wasn't bolted to a block of wood or anything substantial. Not sure my bathroom scale would survive with ~65lbs and the small surface area of the rear flange alone.

My scale did the same thing but it's because of beer and whiskey. :)

Thanks.

Just a follow up about the weight. Out of curiosity I weight both this Scat 4.375" forged crank and also a used D4TE 390 3.78" cast crank. Scat crank was 3 lbs lighter as is. I was expecting the opposite frankly.

Scat forges 4.375" crank = 60.8 lbs (no balance metal added)
Ford 3U D4TE 3.78" crank = 63.8 lbs (10/10 and snout is down at 1.375")

Anyone intrested in another order? or does anyone have a 4.375 crank they would part with?
