Ok, putting up a couple of interesting builds that I thought would be worth having a GTH game with. Waiting on lifters for one and waiting on the motor plate and pump for the other, but they will be dyno'd hopefully within the next couple weeks. I'll do a game for each. Same rules, closest without going over on corrected horsepower gets some goodies. I got some shirts in a few weeks ago, so I'm planning for that to be the prize.
This is the second engine that's "game-worthy" I think. I try to just post games where something is out of the ordinary, not a typical build, different head, funky cam, funky combo, etc.
This one is going in a '66 Galaxie road race car. Gentleman lives in AZ, owns a Shelby Cobra replica with a 428 and owns this Gal that he wants to start road racing. Weird flex, but ok.... I wanted to build a combination for him that would not need a freshen up every season, so I chose components that would last a very long time and would be dependable: rock solid block, bullet proof valvetrain, camshaft with non-aggressive lobes, dry sump system, etc.
The block is a BBM block, prepped with our normal block prep: bored and honed with plates to a 4.350" finished bore size. Mains were align honed to size and the decks were corrected and squared to 10.150". Standard Durabond FP-01 cam bearings.

Crankshaft was a custom Scat piece. Scat will make some great custom cranks if you ask them. This one is a 3.780" stroke, with a 2.200" rod journal, made in their "Superlight" series, which has undercut counterweights, gundrilled mains, scalloped flywheel flange, etc. It's beautiful and only weighs 54 lbs. The crank and rods ride on some coated Clevite race bearings.

Rods are K1 7" pieces. Again, really nice rods, rated for 1000 hp with the fasteners that are included and they are light as well.
Pistons are custom Diamonds, running Total Seal .043/.043/3mm low tension rings. Compression ratio works out to be 11.5:1.

If you're keeping track, this is a 449 cubic inch displacement.
Camshaft is one of my custom solid rollers, 256/264 @ .050", with a 107 LSA installed 2° advanced. Lift is .700"/.675" gross, with a 1.8:1 rocker arm ratio. The cam is pushing some Morel pressure fed solid roller lifters.

Cylinder heads are out of the box prepped TFS heads. They were ordered bare with valves and fitted with some custom valvetrain components, consisting of Manley Nextek springs and Manley titanium retainers. The deck surfaces were skimmed to bump the compression up a hair and the heads were milled for T&D race rockers. Between the lifters and the rockers are custom Trend 3/8" .135" wall pushrods.

On top is a Joe Craine ported TFS Track Heat intake. It flows over 450 cfm and has been ported and balanced by Joe. On top of that will be a 2" Super Sucker carb spacer and a custom Quick Fuel Q-950, with Braswell road race bits and pieces.

Ignition is a locked-out MSD Pro Billet distributor.
Supplying the oil is a fully-custom Aviaid road race system. The pan was custom made for us because of the room constraints that we have. It's a 4 stage system, 3 suck, 1 blow. Everything will be mounted to the front engine plate, including the tank, pump, oil filter adapter, etc.
The water pump is a CVR unit with one of Jay's water pump adapters and he will be turning a 1-wire alternator.
On top is a set of custom sheet metal valve covers. The Aviaid pump should pull quite a bit of crankcase vacuum. I had some plugs made for the valve covers and if they don't suffice, we will go another route.

When the engine is completely finished and sitting on the cradle, I'll snap some finished pics.
So what do you think it will make?

Love the T&D race rocker set up.
Was the milling of the TFS heads (for the rockers) similar to the Edelbrock procedure? It looks similar.
I really like the camshaft choice - 107 LSA +2 Advance should work very well.
I will certainly watch this build.

Yes sir, very similar, except you just have to take a lot more off because the stands on the TFS heads are raised.

I give up on guessing!
But I'd like to see a pic or two of the car as that year in road-racing is rare indeed. In fact, I can only think of a NASCAR race at say Riverside Raceway (with road-race turns!) long ago that would have hosted that model year 1966 Galaxie in a real road event, not just the ovals.

Hey Brent, looks like some burly push rods there. Are they a must have considering the rest of that valve train? I’m asking because I have seen you use lighter stuff. Is that ride going to have an aluminum flywheel?

Jim, I always use the biggest pushrods I can fit. A .135" wall 3/8" pushrod is the minimum that I would use here with these spring pressures. If I could have made a 7/16" pushrod fit, I would have used them.

It would be something to try on a future engine, but I haven't really found where they need any port work so far. I think it would take a 480-ish cube engine or a lot higher rpms to need more volume out of them.
They usually come in just a hair under 170cc and flow about 330 cfm. They're good pieces and will feed a 465 inch engine up to about 700 hp at 7200-7500 rpm.

Still a week or two away on this one. The room constraints have really proved to be a pain in the booty, as far as pump placement, belt length, hose routing, etc.

Finally got everything plumbed the other day and was able to prime the dry sump pump. I always prime the pump with the engine on the stand and the intake off for a reason.....and this is one of those reasons.... Sometimes a solid roller lifter won't pass enough oil to the rockers and the lifters need a connecting groove in order to get adequate flow.
In this picture, the rockers on the left side of the photo are still dry after a couple minutes of priming. A quick groove and they pass oil like they should.

what do you use to grove the lifters?
My build is very close to the same as this apart from the dry sump.
the T&D race set up i'm using a MT style cast tappet cover any clearance problems with tappet cover's?

Just found this today too.
Cats are asleep, one recovering from a wound, so a little Gonkulator time.
JDC must have read the Gonkulators mind on this one.
With the engine driving the water pump and the fancy vacuum oil system in place, and your 2" dyno header setup:
Torq 607 at 4900
Powr 718 at 6800
That is one serious engine.

I use a Dremel with a cut-off disc.

664 hp @ 7000, 614 lb-ft of torque. Not too shabby for a little 449 ci engine, turning all the accessories.
Great little engine with really good parts in it.
The Aviaid dry sump pump was pulling 15" of vacuum unregulated.....which I quickly regulated before we made a pull on it. Got it down to a more sane 10-12 inches. Engine was really sealed up good.
Made 650 hp @ 7000 without a carb spacer. A 1" Super Sucker gained us 6 hp and a 2" gave us another 8. Ended up at 34° of total timing.

What were you imagining for numbers Brent? Did you learn if he will be running an aluminum flywheel? I’m assuming the road race plans call for a stick.
If the prize is still shirts did you get any XLs?

He is running an aluminum flywheel and yes, it's a worked over TKO 600.
I was aiming for around 660-670 hp. A 1.5 hp/ci FE on the dyno here is a stout piece, so I was right in there. All of the 700 hp talk had an eyebrow raised though, but it didn't seem reasonable.
I built a 465ci FE several months back, with TFS heads, TW, solid flat tappet, and 12.5:1 that made 675 hp @ 7200, so I'm very pleased with this one. It held its own.
