Title: any opinions on windage trays?
Post by: GJCAT427 on May 25, 2019, 07:16:57 AM
Like the header says. I`m debating about putting in an OEM tray in my new tunnel port motor. I`ll be running a deep sump pan and its going in my 63 Galaxie which should have been done for Beaver Springs, but sh@t  happens. I am running one in my 56 427 F100, but this new motor will not see a lot of street use due to the cam and comp ratio.

I don’t know if you got it and it’s not gonna hit anything use it. I know some say it’s not needed but I run it. JMO

If you got one then by all means use it.
JMO.

I have one on my Shelby with the Cobra T-sump. It doesn't hit anything and It doesn't leak.

Some say a solid tray, some say a screen tray. I'd recommend a crank scraper as well unless your rpms are quite low. Heck, one can even make a scraper to fit the crank and rod throws. Ain't hard!

Trying again.....  :)  Does a windage tray affect crank splash onto the cam.  So might it be beneficial to not use a windage tray in a center oiler block?

thanks,

The windage tray has nothing to do with cam lubrication as it is supplied via the rods.  Ford engineers used it in both of their true high-performance engines after 1968/70 The 428 CJ and the Boss 302.  Most high rpm builds have them, so that rules interference with cam lubrication.

If you're building a stroker. I used the Canton louvered one when I built my 504. It clears a 4.375 arm with Scat 2.2 rods. No mods required.

Anyone have a source for stock style trays with not screens or louvers ?

Keith,
I saw someone offering reproductions of the original 428 CJ trays a while back. I'll see if I can find out who it was and post a link.

Update, I took one of my NOS trays and tried to fit it  on the new motor yesterday. Its not going to work with out a bunch of cutting. The pickup tube interferes too much. This is with the deep sump factory pan. Unless I go with an aftermarket tray I figure I`ll just run the motor with out one.

Not needed for the deep sump pan as the "scraper" in the deep sump pan does a great job.
"I" feel the FE windage tray was Ford's way to allow more oil in the stock pan and keep it away from the crank. Looking back to "in the day" , "I" also feel many failures were blamed on the block and it's oiling system that were actually caused by a lack of oil VOLUME  in the pan.
   Just this old guy's opinions.

Randy, I have heard numerous complaints of aeration on hard launches. Oil foam doesn't protect bearings so that makes sense to me. We don't see the windage tray as production until the 428 drag pack cars and the Boss 302.
I am running a Cobra T-sump and the CJ windage tray with the Boss 302 oil pick up. It's a larger diameter than the FE ford units and I have no clearance issues anywhere.

Yes that is similar to what i was referring to. A "production" 427 oil pickup is the same tube size as the Boss 302 , has fewer 90* bends and has a strap for support but they are hard to find compared to the ( now reproduced) Boss pickup.. The 390 and 428s have a smaller tube diameter and no strap. I'll bet Ford saved a dollar ( at the most) by using the little one. Good sump capacity and lower inlet restriction make an FE FAR more reliable just by those additions. Add the C8AE filter adapter and the block rework is less important than all the books and magazines have you believing.

Randy, and old timer named "Fritz" turned me onto the pick up and the tray.  40.00 when I bought it was cheap insurance.

Was Fritz here in the LA area?

Yes. Leland from Christensen and Curtis on Anaheim street in Long Beach introduced us. I bought some of his FE parts in the late 80's early 90's.

"His " shop was in the Maywood -Bell area. That man forgot more than most of us will ever know. His engines built made the owner of the Anaheim street building capture many records at Bonneville and other racing events. He was a very humble man and I was deeply saddened with his passing years ago.

Randy,
I did everything you'd mentioned. The only block rework was flaring the openings at the adapter, 7/16 pump to adapter change and that at the bottom of the block where the oil pump mounts. I also went to the '68 oil filter adapter Holley 70 jets for restrictors and an HV pump. I have 80lbs cold, 38 hot at idle and about 68 at 3200 rpm. Not bad.

  Keith ,
That's about all I do anymore. I make sure ( unless it's a "stock" restoration) to use a pan with 7 or so quarts in it. Running the pan out of oil makes all of the "modifications" worthless when you pump air.

Randy:
I even noted that the eight-quart capacity even keeps the engine running cooler manifested by the temperature gauge. Apparently SAAB does the same thing to help control engine temperatures. It has a small oil cooler and almost 7 quart capacity.  My 9-3 2.8 convertible runs 13.7.

In the late 60's my dad ran 427's in his race cars.
One of the engineer's from Ford told him to use the windage tray and run 2 extra quart's of oil in the motor and this would eliminate his bearing wear problems.
If I remember right it worked because I don't ever remember him complaining about bearing wear again.
