Title: 66 Fairlane, 427 engine swap (transmission)
Post by: Dan859 on May 13, 2019, 03:19:02 AM
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a 66 Fairlane, 6 cylinder, 3 speed standard transmission.  I want to swap in my 482 FE (Engine info and specs are posted in the dyno section) , a 4 speed toploader trans., and a 9" rear end.  For this post, I just want to deal with the transmission swap questions.  The transmission is a rebuilt toploader with the big in/big out shafts.  First, is that transmission generally adequate for 650HP/630TQ, or should I start looking for something else (TKO, Richmond, etc).  Second, can I keep the same transmission crossmember, and/or do I need to change the transmission mount?  Anything that I've missed?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Transmission should be strong enough, but you may not like the close ratio gears.

Cross member should be C6/FE version.

I would replace the rubber mount. This is the one I have in mine:

That's definitely a possibility.  I'm only Stateside for a month, so by the time I get everything together, I'm not going to have a whole lot of time to actually drive it.  At this point I want to get the running gear swapped in and just get it running and on the road.  Long term, I plan on getting it changed over to a wide ratio and get a Gearvendor OD unit for it.
