428 CJ Block. It's a serialized R code block.
Looks like the whole block was machined in a shifted state. If you look at the lifter bores, that's the best reference. Front of the block at the water pump inlet is super thin. Not sure how this made it into a car....

Probably ran in the car for over 100,000 miles. In stock configuration they will take a lot more than you'd figure. NOT for aftermarket performance use, that's for sure...

It looks like someone spent some money machining that before doing the sonic. Ouch. This might be the case where not checking and not knowing would have worked out better.

Wow! That is about the only Ford engine (all types btw) I've ever seen with such a bad shift.
First gen. SBC's often had similar shifts, some not so bad and some equally as bad as yours. In fact, eyeballing any old block for lifter bore shift is commonly mentioned in hi-po SBC books, media, etc. as something to avoid when block shopping. That and visually looking for cam bore tunnel shift, another 'marker' for a block to avoid.

Yes, it was an oopsies..... the one time I don't screw around with the sonic tester on a block....
It was a standard bore 428, figured it was a sure thing.
