Title: Mustang II restomod sorry not FE powered
Post by: GPR on February 17, 2018, 10:27:48 PM
Jay said it was okay to post this build. I traded this 1978 Mustang II for some labor on a Mustang we are restoring. This is what we started with.

Not the best job cutting out the hole.

Looks better after Brian cleaned up the hole

Rust around the gas filler that was filled with bondo

I bought an Eleanor gas filler kit

I had to get rid of those crash bumpers. I bought a fiberglass bumper and front valance but I didn't like the fit so I cut it to match the fender and glassed the valance to the bumper so now it is one piece.

I wanted to stiffen the body so I ordered a roll bar kit and Brian welded it in place.

The Mustang II is painted SPI Orange

After a lot of bodywork and block sanding I sprayed the body with a couple of coats of SPI white epoxy before spraying orange.

3 coats of SPI orange and the next day sprayed 3 coats of SPI Universal clear

Looks a lot different outside

Brian wet sanding

I never did like the big spoiler that also went on the quarter panels so I cut it down and bonded it to the hatch.

Brian finished buffing the body

For somebody that is partially red-green-blue color blind, that color difference from the booth to the garage sure is striking!  Does it have some transitional color once its outside?  In one shot you could see on the rear spoiler the more 'orange' vs the red.

Doors fenders and hood lined up.

Installed the gas tank and filler

I traded a C6 and 4000+ stall converter from my race car (I use a C4 now) for this 302 that has very little run time on it.

Welds on roll bar plates are extremely nice, everything I see screams quality work.

Any engine rework Rusty, or will you run it as is?

New Edelbrock intake, Quick fuel carb, Mustang valve covers, water pump and fuel pump. Change to the Mustang II oil pan and Mustang II exhaust manifolds. Headers won't clear the AOD trans.

Also have a new flexplate

I have a Mustang II Cobra II I bought,  in 1978, it is a 1977 model year.   I always liked it, still have it but my son pulled the motor about  20 years ago and it is still like that only 68,000 miles on the car.  I raced it a few times.   Rusty, with your  car car taped off for paint, with the rear windows covered with paper and painted, the car kind of looks like an AMX at first glance

It wasn't easy finding a seat to fit between the door bars and trans tunnel

Speedhut gauges came in. Each gauge has a bag with wires, sending unit or whatever is needed to hook it up.

I have to modify the back side of the gauge panel.

I used a half round file to enlarge the hole.

I still have to paint the dash trim black

Had to make a filler piece to fit the Vintage Air controls

Sanded and painted

The stainless goes on next.

The Vintage Air fits with the modified tunnel and the hoses will go out the side. We have to make brackets since there is no kit for a Mustang II

I have decided it's time to start working on this project again. Dashboard is ready to install but need to fabricate brackets for the AC first.

I don't think I showed how it looks with the taillights installed.
