Title: MEL Motor and Trans
Post by: Arizona ‘58Mercury on December 12, 2017, 01:59:10 PM
Not sure we’re to ask or find out so I figured I would ask you guys.  As the MEL board I found was dead.  Any demand for the old 383 MEL or interchangeable parts to different motors.  I’m pulling out the 383 of my 58 Monterey along with the trans and dropping in a 390Fe.  Thanks in advance.

58-60 FE and MEL share bell housing patterns making FE transmissions a bolt up. I do not think any 58 production year MEL engines had side engine mount bosses but 59 and forward did. I do not know anything about how valuable or durable your 58 transmission is.

Okay, thanks for that! If anything I’ll keep it and tear it down with my 10yo boy

    Hi,

If you are not keeping the Merc-O-matic what do you plan to do for a shifter?  I daily drive a 58 Monterey with a 383 and Merc-O-matic. I might be interested in your engine and trans.

   thanks,

390 with a C6.  Mostly off of recommendations as I’m totally green to cars.  Floor shifter, leave all the original controls for the looks!
