Title: Back on the '65 Mustang (FE POWERED!!)
Post by: AlanCasida on October 07, 2017, 05:18:11 PM
I got the exhaust system completed and now all that is left is to paint the rear valance and I'll be ready for a test drive. :) I decided to run the tail pipes through the rear valance like the GTs but since I narrowed the rearend and moved the springs in board they do not exit in the same place. I ran 3" tubing using Mac Flow Path mufflers.

X3 on that video, Alan. I'm anxious to hear how that dual 3" system sounds. It looks great! I need to add more muff to my system.

Since when do you need a valance and exhaust for a test drive? ;)

Nice job on the exhaust, Alan. And yes, we'll need some video evidence to back up your claim..lol

I got it all buttoned up today and rolled it outside. :) Before I can drive it I need to either build a fan shroud or put on electric fans since it got kind of hot just idling for 15 min or so. Still it was sure nice to get it out in the sun again.  8)

Nice Allan. I think you filled the rear wheelhousing just the right amount.
How much have you moved the frame rails inboard?
I remember i had slantcut pipes like that through the valance
on my 65 mustang when i got hit by a bumperless Volvo 142.
The pipe cut a halfround hole in the Volvo front valance panel
just like when you start to open a beercan

Thanks Heo. I didn't really move the frame rails. I did replace them and straighten them out. I also move the rear springs inside the frame rails and mini tubbed it. I am still undecided if I like the angle cut on the tail pipes and if maybe they stick out too far. I just didn't want the hot exhaust going up on the paint and bumper.

Yes that is a problem, I had them sticking out just 1/2 inch first but
the bumper got discoloured by the exhaust so i slipped on some
chrome extensions but don't liked them sticking out that much .
The stock "trumpets" got some louvers that's aim the gasses down
but is very restrictive
So when i got hit and had to re chrome the bumper i rerouted the exhaust
in front of the wheels and tec inspection went mad ::) No exhaust on
sidewalk side..so i rerouted both on driverside and managed to get that
OK by tec insp.
But you get tired of listening to that on long drives

^^^ This!

I'd keep the exhaust as is, for the reasons you mentioned. I have to constantly wipe my rear bumper and valance down.
Are you going to put any side trim on it or are you going to keep the 'clean' look?

I'm rolling this same problem around in my head as I have 3 inch exhaust out the valance.
The louvers that Heo brought up are interesting. Wonder if you could fab something up that would look/work well.

I played around with a lot of ideas to keep the exhaust there.
louvers, to restrictive  Remove the tank and route the pipes higher
and have a turndown through valance, looked real stupid no matter
how i cut them so i ended up in front of wheels.
On one Mustang that i built a exhaust system on that had fourlink and steamroller tires
coilovers etc with almost no room for the pipes. I went down from dual 3 inch to four pipes
with same area as 3 inch, dont remember the exact sice now  to a "square"  box in the place of the
licenceplate with a plate that directed the gasses down. I built the box out of stainless and painted
it black inside so you had to be close up to see inside the box.
But then he had to have the licence plate between tail lights, So i epoxie glued two magnets to
the plate so it was optional :D

No, this is it. The only thing I have left to do on the body is put a side mirror on it and hood pins. I like the uncluttered look. :)
