Title: 1 last project b4 I Quit . . 540" Twin Turbo Boss 9 for a daily pickup
Post by: TimeWarpF100 on June 27, 2017, 01:46:17 PM
Still have My 482 '66 Pickup & numerous other FE's but thought it would be fun to build a real sleeper before I hang up the tools for good.

Would like to have had it a FE but for the HP level I wanted it was just not going to work. Mostly a parts avail issue and the bore stroke combo I was looking for.

Doing a Twin Turbo Boss 429 that will hopefully handle 3000 hp. Initially it will not be near that but the parts will be there . .

Uploading photo's now

Starting from Bottom up:

Had a custom Stef's pan built to fit the Aluminum Block/large main caps and of course the pickup truck chassis. Hope I measured correctly. Note the Turbo oil return fittings on pan.

C & C Motorsports 10.320 block. The Eliminator Sportsman is only good for 1100 hp, HP Billet good for 1400hp, Eliminator Ultra is only good for 2000hp. And the premier 2500+ They are all for 17 bolt heads. A lot of details to work out yet but wanted all good stuff to start with in case decide to "turn it up" .  One still never knows what may happen but at least a bit of insurance.

As long as you want to take average of what I have made for past 12 months that's good. Be here at 4:45 am in the morning to go over what you will be doing for the day. Any job you are given that you cannot handle $$ will be deducted accordingly.

What....no 3 stage nitrous system? ;)

Almost seems a shame to hide those parts inside an engine. Stefs does some nice work!

Very, very cool.  Are you planning to put the turbos under the hood, or out back somewhere?

13 stages of nitrous with your finger on the buttons . . How many stages will you dare use in a old pickup? LOL ;D :o ::)

Hoping to fit it all under the hood. Its been a waiting game. I wanted the block & heads first so I could start building the headers and turbo mounting. Getting it fit in truck.

Its been one of those wait wait wait games. 6 Months since payment and parts are finally starting to show up. Heads I am told are getting machined now.

At the mercy of parts vendor's now.  Supposed to be end of march early april at the latest. But we all know how that goes!

One thing I don't like about turbo setups is all the plumbing required under the hood.  When you have a really cool looking motor like a Boss 9 or a cammer, all that plumbing takes away from the underhood appeal, I think.  I have a twin turbo setup for my Galaxie, supposed to be good for 2000 HP, but I'm going to stick the turbos and intercoolers in the trunk.  That way the exhaust will exit to the back via normal headers, and one 4" pipe will come from the trunk, through the interior and up through the firewall to a rear mounted throttle body on a sheet metal intake, leaving the whole SOHC engine fully visible.  This approach will cost some power, but I figure I'll have power to burn anyway, since I don't plan to cage the car for anything faster than 8.50s.  You could do something similar with your truck, with the turbos in the box, and preserve the underhood appeal of the Boss motor...

Good idea Jay!  Nothing finalized yet until I get the heads so I can start fittin' everything. But, lots of room in the engine bay at least until I try fitting turbo's. LOL

Even if you put them up under the bed in front of the rear wheels?  Lots of space if you run the headers down the inside of the frame rail, then the boost side on the outside up into the inner fenders and to the engine.

Back when I still had my '67 daily driver with 352/toploader I had dreams of finding a couple turbo coupe turbos and mounting them on upside down log manifolds(or custom headers) and making a real sleeper out of it.  Too bad the truck rotted to the ground long before that project got off the ground.  I don't think I want to mess with my '69 as that 428 has too much CR to put boost to it.

C n C motorsports makes a awesome block. Far better than the old ford motorsport blocks that had alot of issues with un finished oil galleys as well as out of alignment cam tunnel.  They resolved those issue's  but theres still a handful of those blocks out there. A good friend has a C n C motorsports  block in his 632CID 6.80 all motor top sportsman car. Heads are trick Flo A 460's only hand ported and a trick Flo cast 2×4 intake. Ram dual disk, lenco, etc. The block is really a great looking piece .
Rambling over..

A good friend of mine has a twin turbo 427W Ranger. He put the turbos and intercooler in the bed. Charge pipe runs through the cab and over the trans tunnel. Here's a quick video of his setup and a few passes. Truck has run quicker and is street driven.

Now have parts needed.

Current the block and rotating assy at a friends shop
For bore, balance etc.

I do have the heavy wall stainless to start the header build
For turbos. That will start when I get block back.

Started back on my orange 427 truck to finally get it done.
It will be 18 yrs since I drove it last on Feb 1st.

KS

Kaase gave me a name of a local place and it was suggested to use the Billet TH400 along with a Atlas Transfer Case. Not much in Ford line that will hold the Power. Hoping for 1000 RWHP

No final decision on trans yet but will be using the Atlas Transfer Case.

Any input on a Ford trans/builder that will hold the power I am open on that.

Frank Merkyl runs about that in a race car with a c6
If you are really interested in staying Ford transmission maybe drop him a line.  He's a 429/460 guy so I think he'd really like your project.

Remember too that your 1,000 RWHP will never see the ground if you're using street tires.  Creating tire smoke doesn't stress a driveline very much!  Many Jag rear ends in Cobra replicas will attest to that fact.

I wouldn't worry about an all-out drag race box.  A C-6 with the modern goodies and a good valve body will serve you well.  Given the ample torque that engine will put out, you probably won't want too much stall in the converter either.

Frank Merkyl runs about that in a race car with a c6
If you are really interested in staying Ford transmission maybe drop him a line.  He's a 429/460 guy so I think he'd really like your project.

Flywheel hp should be 1400-1500hp
Never heard of a C-6 that would hold that much power for long. Especially in a
4x4 that has some weight to it.

Kaase says combo I have less turbos will make
Around 800. This will be geared more towards
Daily driver vs anything race oriented

Over 80 mph...  lol

I would guess it's a ATI's new T400 case , you can order it as a 2 or 3 speed , with or without Lock Up Clutch , it does look sweet and probably what you need at that power level

Has anybody tried a street Lenco at elevated horsepower levels? 14.7 pounds of boost will theoretically double power and really high boost is as simple as turning the knob on the wastegate modulator when you can't use all that's available.

Yes, a Lenco would work well, save for the multiple levers and odd street use manners. Maybe a Jeffco as well.

You could use an air shifter with the Lenco. I am contemplating the use of an engine such as yours, since Jim Dove is out of the picture, but I'll need a transaxle. Car builder says they're available but pricy.

Depending on details, an NA 800 HP engine should come close to 1000 with the wastegates set for zero boost/zero vacuum.

What sort of cruising range would that have?

This truck had 68 gallon fuel capacity prior to teardown. Plan is to build a new 50 gallon tank in rear with the big pump then keep stock 18 gallon tank to use as a transfer tank.

Assuming the gas stations are no more than 75 miles apart I think we can make it that far . .

Figuring a 2000 RPM cruise at 77 mph in OD hoping it will get close to 10 mpg on 91 fuel so cruising range should be pretty darn good!

Fuel system set up for E50 or even E85 so that will be a big drop in MPG but can still go a long way. 10 mpg is a total guesstimate no clue until we try on 91.

That should be adequate for pulling a boat to the lake! But I would imagine a 7000 pound 4x4 truck with a Boss 540, even without turbos, means that you shouldn`t be expecting any Christmas cards from Al Gore, Greta, or the Sierra Club. As for the truck, I have seen that style of truck reffered to as a "OBS", what does that stand for? As a former owner of "Bump Sides, and Dent Sides", and currently a Super Duty, the OBS designation is unknown to me.

#1 Reason for doing it as I am sick of getting Christmas cards from so many. Figured this should do it!

Being All aluminum engine it should take a bunch of weight off front end. I suppose will gain a few lbs back trying to get big enough axles and brakes on it so it will actually STOP!

You could put a spray system on it to keep the charge cool. Run methanol with the Nitrous Oxide and have it start to come on at five pounds of boost. No need for all the extra plumbing and complication associated with a charge cooler. (It works for me.)
