Hello all, just joined and thought I'd say hello. I like the looks of it Jay, but I'm not sure about all these smilies watching me type. Hope to offer some helpful suggestions or ask some interesting questions from time to time. Later, Travis.

Great idea Lance, I just stickied the thread.  Here's my story:

- Started out with performance cars in 1976 with a 67 Mustang fastback with a 289 and C-4.  Sold it to buy my '68 Shelby, that had been fitted with a 428 Cobra Jet from a '69 Torino Cobra.  Been an FE guy ever since.

- Went back to school in '88 and got a degree in electrical engineering in '91.  Went through a few notable cars in the meantime, including a '66 Pro-Street Cyclone and a 71 SCJ Ranchero, but they were never as cool as the Shelby (which I still have, although it is currently apart).

- After marriage and kids in the mid to late 1990s, I got back into the cars pretty heavily in 2003 when I bought my '69 Mach 1.  Had three different engines in that car in two years, experimenting.  Took it to the inaugural Drag Week in 2005, and went back with it in supercharged form in 2007.

- Bought my dyno in the summer of 2005, and had it set up and running by March 2006.  Way, way more fun than any other car toy I've ever had  ;D  Judging by the crowds at some of the dyno sessions, everybody else thinks so too.

- Picked up the Galaxie in 2007 after I'd spent a year or so screwing around with the SOHC.  I wanted a car I could just drop one of those engines into, and the Gal worked out pretty well for that.  Took it to Drag Week in 2008 and 2009.

- Currently working on a 69 Shelby clone that will get the SOHC, along with a lot of other race oriented parts; see the Road to Drag Week 2011 blog.

I enjoyed auto shop classes in highschool back around 1970, started working on cars out of necessity because anything I could afford was broken.   On the advice of my friend's Dad, I purchased a 2.8 V/6 engine, put that into a 71 pinto around 1977.  It was not fast and before long I had a 302 and eventually a 351.  I was going through college (1981 BSEE) at this time, and the car was VERY low budget, but I had a lot of fun.  I got married in 85 (also had a Mustang II with a 351 by then)  got rid of the cars; FOUR KIDS by 1993.  Built a house with a larger garage (and more bedrooms) 15 years ago.

As a family project we bought a 69 Mach One in 2002.  I wanted a Ford to use up some of my old 351 parts, ha ha; not realizing a 428 would have so much intrigue.

Despite being a low priority I got the Mach pieced together a few years ago and enjoyed driving it for a summer as a multicolored beater.  I have since taken the front sheet metal and doors off for minor rust repair, then started a basement remodel (yikes) and hope to be back working on the Mustang soon.

Best part of this has been the friends we have met, especially some of the BC supershifters (Dale P, Rory, Tom P etc) that have been very welcoming and generous with their time.  The car has been a low priority as I'm self employed, kids have had their own projects and college but it has definitely been a part of our identity.

My name is Jim Whitton and I live in Western Massachusetts. I'm also on the Fordfe forum as Cyclonic66. I grew up as a gearhead loving fords with a father who was into Pontiacs. Drove a '67 Galaxie 2 door from my Sr. year in H.S. through my entire undergraduate years obtaining my B.S. in Ceramic Engineering. Now I can engineer the hell out of a coffee cup or a toilet bowl. Actually, I play with jet engine coatings, but that's a different topic..That Galaxie treated me very well but after school I had to let it go and bought what I thought would be the most practical vehicle for a young kid that didn't know where he was going to live or for how long: a Ford Ranger.

After a few years had passed and my wife and I got comfortable, I started looking for a toy. I was in search of a '64 Galaxie big block car, preferably an XL. I found a guy who owned one since '64 but he had it promised to his son. He also had this extreme low mileage 66 Cyclone that he was considering putting up for sale. Loving fords and always liking something different, I had to go see it. Once I saw the original condition of the car, I had to own it. I've been playing with it for several years, always with the intention of being able to put it back to original. It now has a strong 428, discs up front, a custom ram air setup, and a complete replacement of everything behind the Toploader: driveshaft, 9" braced housing, nodular case with a Locker, monoleafs and CalTracs. All original parts, including the 390 are tucked away in my garage. Before my next toy, I'll put it back to original and probably sell it.

I will own a '64 Galaxie one of these days. No room at the moment, even had to sell my '07 Mustang GT when I inherited a '60 Pontiac from my dad. Priorities.

Nice site Jay. Looks like you intend to do it right and be involved.

Hey guys, Im Reuben Anderson, Im in Albuquerque New Mexico. My first car was a 1956 Buick special that I got in highschool in 2000. Went to college in 2003 and got a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 08. The Buick sparked my intrest in old cars. I fell in love with an old and really beat up 64 Galaxie that seemed to be an old dirt track car that was left in a field by my grandmas house in a tiny Nebraska town (pop 32) Since then I purchased 2 64 Fast back XL's one from Eureka California (epay) and drove it back. Turned out that it was a rust bucket. Found another in Sacramento. Flew out! and drove that one home too! This is the car you see in the pic. I swapped the interiors and then sold the other car. I have added Crites fiberglass front end and built a mild 390 for it along with converting it to a 4spd. This car was my daily driver until 2010 when my wife and I started a family. Now it is my fun car, I just wish it was lighter. I have built 2 390's and a 347sb ford that made 500-whp with a little help from a bottle. I enjoy the process of designing and building an engine. Working on getting the capital to put together a couple. Eventually I would like to run 11's in the ol' gal with a 6-71 or 8-71. However that is at our local track that is at 5300ft elevation.

Currently restoring the fuel system, new tank and 3/8 line, and working to pay the bills  :D

Hello fellow FE enthusiasts!

My name is Brent Rawls from the DFW area.  I have a 1969 F100 that recently received a freshly built 390 and C6.  I'm interested in learning as much as possible about this platform as I continue to "make it my own" so to speak.

I look forward to conversing with other like-minded enthusiasts to learn and share.

I guess since I've been pinned up there, I should give my intro. My name is Travis McCool and I live near Shelby Iowa. Graduated high school in Montana some 18 years ago then went to tech school in Phoenix. I came back to Iowa (was born here), and got a job at Mack in Omaha. A wife and a couple kids later, we bought an acreage a year ago.  Now I've got a place to work on some toys, just don't have the time. The wife, kids, dog and to do list keeps me busy, but I keep thinking and acquiring parts for the projects.
On to the projects 35 chivy pickup-I've owned it for over 20 years, someday it'll get a boss 429 and the gasser look. 50 chivy pickup- someday it'll be a dually with diesel power. 75 Lincoln Continental- grampa bought it new, still nice with 63000 miles. 90 f250- extended cab, 4x4, diesel. 02 f150 supercrew-the wife's truck. 03 Crown Vic- the only new car I've ever bought, 185000 miles with NO problems. Two 63 Ford country sedan wagons- it took two to make one "good" one, looonnggg ways to go. Mid 60's Ford 4400 tractor- pushes snow pretty good. Mid 60's Cub Cadet 72- it's scattered across the shop and the grass is getting tall around here. Almost forgot the 71 f250 camper special- bought it for the good running 390, but can't make myself cut the rust bucket up.  ;D Later, Travis

My name is Andy, I reside in Adelaide, Australia. I have been a member of FordFE.com since it spawned from the 'old' forum due to a certain and infamous SS. I only have 1 FE powered car (no prizes for guessing what) but have developed a passion for these power plants since buying it 16 years ago. As FE's are rare (ish) on the ground over here and no Australian built Fords came with them information and parts are not easy to come by. I will be embaking on a project over the next few years to make the Fairlane more streetable, ie. take it from the pro-street theme to more of a pro-touring car, yes I must be getting old, but I just want to be able to drive it more and further. I also own a 67 Fairlane convertible with a 289.

I look forward to participating in this forum when I have questions or something of value to add.

Just a suggestion for the forum. How about a members projects section?

I am the one on the right that looks like he has something up his buttock. The two cars on the right are mine.

Thanks Jay. My book is on it's way and I'm anxious to see it.

I may be the only one here who actually doesn't own an FE but it's always been a favorite of mine. Over the years I've wanted to put one in my 58 F-100 but, despite the fact I've owned 2 engine/trans (390/C-6 & 390/FMX) combinations, the planets have never been in alignment for that project. Regardless, I have a fair amount of experience with them as a Ford tech in the mid 70's and in my repair shop in the late 70's early 80's when I was considered a bit of a Ford specialist. Some of you may know me from my days in the New York metro area as Lou's Garage, North Rockland Amoco, or Manglass Automotive. Or perhaps from the long lost Dover Drag Strip or Englishtown (SS/I, F/S, H/S). Or my sport car days in the early 80's. Regrettably none of it was with Fords. I still have a vision to build an FE for myself (I've built 3 or 4 for customers, including a 427) but that remains to be seen. Barry's jailbreak kits are awesome, a great value for the money that lets you build the proverbial silk purse out of the sow's ear.

Well where does one start?  My name is Rodney and I am from Ohio.  I first was introduced to the FE with my first couple of pickups, both having 390's.  I didnt realize how much I liked those 390's until my next two trucks one with 351M and other with 302.  That was the start of my love for FE's, the 428scj took it to the next level for me, I havent looked back since.  My goal is to put an FE in most everything I can, do have a couple of cars that dont have one, the '40 Ford Deluxe tudor w/flathead (all original), '62 Falcon that I am putting a turbocoupe 2.3/ T5 (cause its different) and a '67 Country Sedan S/W w/289 for now but I keep thinking a good torque monster 390 would make a neat tow rig/swapmeet ride.  Otherwise everything else I own if propelled by the FE family.
I have alot to learn about them yet, especially on the performance end of things, need to keep giving my Chebby friends a run for there money with this old school ford engine.  So Im on that life long task of learning everything I can about the FE, as well as hoarding as many as I can, too stuff in everything that can be made to fit in.
Another real good reason for someone to become addicted to the FE is the quality of the people you meet with the same interest.  I have had my share of hobbies and interest over the years and FE guys are the greatest out there, willing to help each other, share knowledge (example this forum and its founder).  Hope to meet many more of you in the future, as great as these forums are, nothing beats meeting people face to face and having some good ole fashioned benchracing and brain picking.

Barry Byer, long time FE and FE forum guy. I've been working on my '53 F-100 for better than a decade now. Started off with no kids, now have two etc. etc. Presently 390 with "cough" C-6 but this is so it can be sold and I can get something that both kids can sit in.
Career-wise I am an aircraft maintenance engineer (Think A&P with Inspection Authority) working for the Canadian version of JetBlue, WestJet. 46 years old and still playing with toys!!

I'm Ken Sheffer

Since the family car was a '53 Merc when I learned to drive, you can easily guess that I've been a Ford fan for a long time. I managed to treat that car to a complete header exhaust, Mallory diz, etc, 3 Strombergs on an Offie manifold and get my first ticket, for drag-racing, while on Woodward at about Square Lake Rd going south. And my Mother drove it to work as a schoolteacher every day.

Next car was a '34 five window, channeled eleven inches and sectioned, running, when I got it, a 59A configuration that was too rough for street driving. I sold that powerplant and put in the engine from the '53 Merc.

Next I got a '54 Customline, and installed first a 292, and then a 312. I built headers, converted it to a stick-shift, put on dual quads and finally a Paxton blower.

KS

In November of '63 I went to work at T&C Livonia and in February of '64 I bought a new 'R' Custom Ford. The only option was an AM radio. Every other checkmark had to do with going fast. It had the 'T' ignition and a 4.11 gear to go with the mandatory four-speed (a T-10---changed to a pre-production top-loader that took a bunch of talking at work to acquire.) In addition it had the big brakes and HD suspension and 15" tires. Daily driving and getting married took first place and meant that the best the car ran that season was 13.27 at 107.

I sold the '64 to Brother Lon and bought a new '65 1/2 Mustang GT fastback that I quickly converted to a GT-350 clone complete with a Paxton blower and a deck exchange for the back seat. Shortly thereafter I finally got an AB in Chemistry and became a metallurgical process engineer in QC at Livonia Trans.

Before long I got a '67 XR7GT Cougar and assembled a 427 to replace the 390. And during that same time frame, I was working with Brother Lon on his '67 Mustang/TP and racing with the Corrunker Brothers with their T-Bolt and the Romy-Hammes-sourced CJ Mustang with which we held the Super E Automatic MPH record for most of that season.

Other projects have included a chopped-top, full-frame-and-cage '72 Pinto with a 385 SCJ-based 466, several bottle-fed Ford Turbo cars, the '63 F-100 ICB short-bed with a succession of FE engines and a Volare front suspension that I've owned for more than 20 years, and my latest project, an '02 Lincoln LS, bought new, and now with roll-cage and fire-suppression system and belly pan Maxton E/F CC record holder.

And finally, a more serious Land Speed car that'll be FE powered. The goal is to better 300 MPH with a car you can drive to the store. It's wonderful what a pair of hair-dryers, a bottle, and overhead cams can do.

Duane Bjornson here, I have been on the FE forum for a while but mostly lurking and don't post much.
I started working at a Ford dealer when I was 16 as a helper and one of the techs there had 13 Mustangs from 65 to 72. He got me hooked on the FE engine. I left Ford at 19 and started an apprenticeship in the HVAC&R industry working for the Trane corporation. I worked in commercial and industrial refrigeration for 15 years until the local apprenticeship training center hired me full time as the HVAC&R instructor!

Cars 72 Mustang (was the first). Sold the 72 and bought a 68 Mustang coup and beat the crap out of it but had fun. Sold it to get my 69 convertible which is my on going project that my wife loves to hate. I was excited to see Jay making a 69 Shelby clone. Not many of them around and they are unique which is why I am cloning one. My project has evolved through the years (kids take time) but I enjoy the time I get to tinker with it. With the SOHC there has always been something that needs custom attention (engine is set back 3") but it's fun.
Great amount of knowledge with the different people posting and I enjoy reading and learning.

My name is Jeff Holmes, and I'm originally from Grove City, Ohio.  I have been a Mustang fan since I was 18 and bought a 67 coupe, but my dream car has always been a 1969 Cobra Jet Mach 1.  Five small block Mustangs later, I finally got my dream car this past November as a retirement present for myself when I retired from the Army after 26 years.  I currently live in Yelm, WA. and teach Army JROTC in Tacoma, Wa.

My first and only FE is a 1969 Black Jade Q code Mach 1 with top loader 4 speed and 3:50 gear rear end.  The engine currently is a C6ME-A externally balanced block (believe it is a 428, but have not opened it up to confirm) with 428 Cobra Jet heads.  The car came with a Offy 360 intake, but after reading Jay's dyno test results on the FE forum, I scored a Blue Thunder 4v intake for $440 on Ebay that I'm getting ready to put on soon.

I'm also married with three boys, who I'm trying to get into cars also, but they are still young (3, 4 and 8 years old).  I'm sure come prom night they will all of a sudden love 1969 Mach 1's!

Hi, my name is Todd Keen, and I'm another FE fan down in Australia. In the past I have owned a 61 Mercury Monterey, a 68 Mustang fastback 390GT (which I sold waaaay to cheaply) and a 70 Galaxie. I currently am building a 64 Fairlane Thunderbolt clone drag car powered by a 482 cube FE. I would also like to get hold of a 62-64 Galaxie in the future. I've played with windsors, clevelands and 385s, but now I'm a commited (or should be commited) FE fan.

Kerry Johnson here; I've been reading and learning on the FE Forum since 2001 or there about; don't remember exactly. My first FE experience was when my Dad bought a 1962 Merc Station wagon; it had a 352 and A/C and it was pretty much a turd. It was always over heating and had very little power, so I started off with a poor attitude about the FE. But then I was only 10 at the time, so eventually I got over it.

In 1976, I bought a 1974 F100 XLT 4X4 with a worn out 360, got a 390 from a 63 T Bird out of the junk yard and rebuilt it and replaced the 360. Big improvement in power, but it got horrible milage; drove it until 2001 and decided to restore the truck and replace the 390 with a 428. Took me about 6 years to get it done, but it's pretty much there.

During the truck rebuild, I got a 64 Galaxie a 61 Starliner and a 70 Mustang Mach 1 428 CJ, non shaker hood. I just built a 416 Tri Power to go in the Starliner and I'm building 496 to go in the 64 Gal. Hope I get the Gal done some day, but it sure is taking me a long time to git er done. The Gal was a rust bucket and it's been a real challenge getting all the sheet metal replaced and straight, but it's pretty much there now; I just need to find someone to paint it.

Anyway, I sure do enjoy reading and learning from you guys here and on the FE Forum, the knowledge and insight gained is invaluable.

My daily driver these days is a 2011 F150 4X4 with the 3.5 lite Eco Boost; it's a pretty impressive power plant, lots of power and I get 17 MPG around town and 19 or so on the freeway doing 80+.

I am Bill Ballinger.  Many of you know me from the old forums.  This is my new home. It is a well laid out forum, that allows for things lacking in the other forum.  I have been misunderstood over in the old forums, and I know that many of you share both.  Please understand that I will respect the rules of this forum the same as I did the old ones.  I won't post anything that I don't have first hand knowledge of without a qualifier to guide the reader to a source with better understanding.

Also, I will carry no emotional baggage into this forum.  Any contact of a personal nature must be conducted via personal email or personal message.  But that said, I want all of our interactions to be fun.  Life is too short to waste on negativity.  This is a fresh start, and hopefully Jay can keep the bullies who have taken over the other forum out.

Anyway, I am happy to a part of this forum, and if you have any questions I can answer I will do so, or direct you to the best source I know just as I always have.

Hey everyone.  I'm Joe M and love FE engines.  I worked for Ford at Cleveland Casting and the Engine Plants in Brookpark Ohio but I'm retired now.  IMHO, there is no engine that looks as nice a fully dressed FE.  And no other engine sounds quite like an FE as well.  I first got hooked on FE engines when I used to crew for a guy who ran a 55 Ford with a 427 medium riser.  I bought a 69 Fairlane Cobra and it was awesome.  White with a blue bench seat interior, 428 CJ with a 4 speed.  Loved that car.  Got away though.  Had several CJ Mustangs and a 66 Fairlane with a 390.  I still have my first car too, a 68 Mustang which came with a 289 but now sports 428CJ/C6 power.  Kept the 289 emblems though!  Nothing like a little subterfuge.  Anyway, love this site and how it's organized.  Now I'll spend even more time on the computer!

My name is Ken Slater AKA "Ken 67 Wagon" on the FE Forum and "FE_Rex" on most others.  I live about 1-hr west of Houston, TX.  Started with FE's in Fairlanes circa 92, ran a 67 Fairlane wagon in 98 before they were cool.  Have several cars and projects involving tractors (Ford), farm implements, cars(Ford), trucks(Ford), guns and many other mechanical contrivances - the older and more arcane - the better.

Regards to all,

Hello, my name is Dave Schaidle and I live near Peoria Illinois. I have a 1967 Fairlane and am in the process of converting it from a small block to a 390 I had saved from my high school car (a 67 Fairlane GT). Once I have it sorted out I plan on upgrading to a stroked side oiler I am building. I love all things Ford and admire the things some of you guys do with your cars. Jay and his fleet are amazing as are some of the other cars and people tied to this and the Ford FE forum. I had the good fortune to have met Jay during the Drag Week that he won with the '69 Mach and it motivated me to get my dormant Fairlane going again. I also have an 5.0 EFI '92 Ranger that my oldest son and I built as his high school car that was then passed down to his little brother last year when he left for the Naval Academy so I love this forum because it embraces modern technology for old dinasours.

Hello, I'm Jim (69Chop1) from Minnesota. I bought my first FE in 1965, it was in a 60 Starliner when I was living in LA. Had many 60s Fords with FEs in them and then moved up to 67-70 Mustangs with FEs in them.
Currently have 3 69-70 Mustangs with FEs in them. My (almost) daily driver is a 69 Mustang fastback with a chopped top, tubbed etc powered by a 428 CJ and a C6.

Hello my name is Howie Merrette. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada.
I was a Canadian Navy Career Sailor who has had a love affair with FE's
for all of my life. I have owned the same crappy old 68 Mustang Fastback for a long time.
When I was getting divorced a few times it was my only car. I have hauled bags of cement in it. I have driven it in the winter in Nova Scotia, 428 power. I bought a Genesis 427 for it.
I have small collection of 67 Fairlanes.
My pride is a Nova Scotia sold GT S Code Candy Apple Red. I found it in a field a few years ago after searching for it for a number of years. It was stripped. It has a ways to go before I can take it for a spin, but I have collected almost all the stuff to do it.
I have been a regular on FORDFE for a few years now.
I think it would be really kool to see this site become as active and lively.
One can never have too much FE.

Names Mike Anderson and I've been messing with FEs since the mid 60s. Still have a dragcar (Pinto) that has run 9s with a 390 based FE and am putting my big motor back together this winter for it. Been a member of the FE Forum for a long time but dont post very much. I'm looking forward to being a member here.

Hi guys.

My name is Morten Aase and I live in Norway. I've been working on cars for more than 30 years but I'm a complete greenhorn when it comes to American Iron. I work as a tool designer, mostly Solid Works but also Catia, AutoCAD and Pro/Engineer.
Bought my first amcar in may this year, a 1967 Mustang Fastback GT 390 4-speed. Found it on ebay, had it inspected and put on a boat. Got it registered and on the road july 1.
I love the car so far but there is a couple of things i want to do to it. First on the list is fix the engine. It ran ok when I first got it but has developed an oil consumption that went from acceptable to ridicolous in a few weeks.
It is more than enough bad weather here in Norway already for me to making big blue oil clouds also, hehe.

I've been in contact with Barry R already and even though I'd love for him to build me a killer all alu engine, I simply can't afford that unfortunatly. So, I'm looking for other options.

Looking forward to be part of this forum. I doubt I can post anything helpful to others due to lack of knowledge about FE's but I've built about 70 engines over the years so I have developed some mechanical skills at least.

Best regards
Morten

Great site. I'm Mike Gaffney over on the FE forum and most every where else for that matter. Have always loved my fords, my first car (1965) was a 53 Merc, flathead/merc-o-matic, followed by a 58 fairlane. After I got back from across the pond (1974) I picked up a 65 mustang 2+2 289/4speed/disc brakes. Grew up in Wisc. and moved to Colo. in 75. Vehicles now consist of, 66 mustang fastback (supercharged smallblock/T-5), 66 F-250 (397FE/TKO 600), 67-79 Homogenized F-250 4x4 (396FE/TKO 600), 60 T-Bird (Going in soon 433FE/4R70W), and a 72 triumph TR-6 destined for a sbf conversion. Look forward to learning a lot here and contributing when I can. Mike

My name is Steve M. I never really introduced myself at the other forum, just jumped in a bit, but I will here. I'm from the Detroit downriver suburbs, 52 years old, grew up in the great era of muscle cars, and always thought that automatics are for girls. I lived very close to Detroit Dragway when I was a kid and would sneak through the hole in the fence to watch on Saturdays, I loved what I saw and heard. I knew at a young age that the 427 Fords were something special but you never really saw to many of them, when you did they won, they were expensive, and Ford never mass produced them. Played with small Chevies and B body Chryslers a little bit, but always had a soft spot for the Fords. I had some cool Mustangs when I was kid, 66 67 68 69, so I have had a bit of all of them and still like them all. But the R code Ford was always my unobtainable dream car! I am a shade tree mechanic but did spend time in as a mechanic in some dealerships. Foremost I am a body man and painter. I started at 14 riding my bike to a body shop and sweeping floors until I finally got the chance to do some real work. Painted 10 to 20 cars a day at Earl Schieb as a senior in high school, spent 11 years as a prototype mechanic at AMG corp building military prototype vehicles, I learned a lot there. I now work at Ford as a clay sculptor and have worked on some very cool stuff including the Ford GT and Shelby GT 500. Kids got in the way of car stuff for many years but since they have grown I got back into my true love, cars, and Fords. I like to do original restos or slight resto mods but keep it old school with a bit of modern tech. I am by no means a machinist or an engine builder and can not ad much technical info here, but I sure enjoy the forum and taking it in. I have always had my machining done and assembled the engines myself, but this time I am letting the pros build my shortblock.  I won't pipe in unless I feel I have something to offer but I will ask questions. I do now have my R Code which is a 65 Galaxie as well as an S code Cyclone, the Cyclone being my current project. I am now working in Brazil for Ford and am in the last 6 months of a 3 year assignment, so to help pass the time I have been acquiring the parts to build a 427 for my Cyclone. I have a true admiration for all the people and things I see on this forum as well as the FE forum and am a bit intimidated to be honest, but here I am. I will post in the current project forum my Cyclone project. Steve

Another person from Australia here. My name is Bart Clara and I live about 60 miles South East of Melbourne. My dad has owned a series of hot rods and 50's and 60's Fords over the years, therefore I got sucked in along the way and love it. Currently in the fleet are: 1929 Roadster (not going), 1932 Roadster (about halfway through getting it going again, it hasn't been driven since 1977), 1939 Deluxe Coupe (Flathead powered), 1949 Convertible (all stock except for wide wheels with radials and it has been lowered), 1955 F-100 (not going), 1963 1/2 Galaxie (428CJ powered, soon to get a SOHC), 1964 Galaxie wagon (about three quaters of the way through a bare shell rebuild, 352 powered) and a 1964 Fairlane Sports Coupe (Windsor powered). Both dad and I work in a shop where we mostly work on hot rods and 50's and 60's American and Australian cars, although we are Ford biased.
Thanks to Jay for accepting me on these forums and I look forward to asking all you people about 3 million questions as we get through all these projects at home as well as work.
Thanks again, Bart.

Hey Todd, good to see you here as well mate. It is a bloody drama been on the other side of the country from a fellow FE person. If you ever find yourself in Melbourne please feel free to drop in anytime, it would be good to catch up and a beer or three. How did the 1963 1/2 Galaxie that you bought turn out? How is the Fairlane going?
Good to hear from you fella.

The Fairlane project is going very sloooooowly, but still progressing. I sold the 63 1/2 as it turned out to be a total rust bucket - so much for a good solid restorer. However, I've just got this back home in my shed:

Original Z code 500XL. Had an auto trans originally, but now a 4 speed. Plan is to put a 427/496 stroker R code clone engine in it and cruise in style.

Hello new to the site from the Mississippi Coast. I just bought a 62 G code Galaxie 500 and will no dought have many questions. I  run an altered wheel base 65 Comet with the Southerngassers ( wish it had an fe but just a 425" windsor) and plan on the Galaxie being returned to near original as a cruiser. The car is mostly original 406 3x2 4 speed car with 370 tracklock (was 411 from the factory) and a local Pennsacola, Fl car bought new at Whitson Ford.
I hope the links work. anyway hey!

Hi, I'm from southeastern NC, on the other forum as Richard67F100.  I have a 67 F100 with a 402 cu in FE.  I have played with FE's for years since I had my 69 428 CJ Torino.  Wish I still had it!  I cut my teeth with small blocks in a 66 Mustang, starting with a 289 and ending up with a 351C in it.

My 2nd FE was a 66 F100 with a 200,000 + mile 352.  It ended up with a 390 before I junked it due to rust (after I got the 67).

My current hot rod project is a 65 Falcon that will have a 460 cu in Windsor (yes, a small block).  I have had it since 2006 but working on it has been sporadic although I haved ramped it up lately.  This is my first project where I have done rust replacement and I'm learning as I go.  I wish I was as fast as Jay is getting his cars going but I think mine was in worse shape that his are.  Anyway I'm always impressed with Jay's work, as well as many others from the other forum.

   Hi All,

My name is Mark. I live in North Adams, Massachusetts, which is in the northwest corner of the state.  I have a few FE powered Mercs.

A 68 Monterey fastback that was used in the movie Taking Woodstock. I then hit a deer with it and the car is now apart and is next on the list for restoration.

Here is a pic of my Monterey from  scene in the movie:

I also have another 68 Monterey that is a convertible the 390 in it is seized. I've been storing it for about 6 years and hope to start on that project soon. Also there is a 69 S code Cougar XR-7 that awaits restoration.

Here is a picture of the 4th and 5th bay of my transmision shop where I keep some stuff.
(The 3 bays that we mainly work out of are not this sloppy.)
The 69 390 Cougar is underneath the black and white 58 Parklane. A 70 Cougar XR-7 351c 4v conv is under the 68 Monterey conv. The body of the blue car on the left is a 69 Cougar Sport Special 351w AOD, which is 99% done.

The latest purchase is a 64 Montclair Marauder with 390. The Marauder is now automatic, but the plan is to someday put a 445 stroker in it with a Tremec.

There are a bunch of other projects on my list. More Cougars and both of the 58 Mercs. In the mix there are some trucks. 78 and 79 Ford pick-ups and Broncos. Also a 57 Mack B-42 and a couple Brockways.  Oh, I almost forgot I have a 330FT powered Ford C-700 bucket truck.

Here is my summer driver 58 Monterey:

I would probably get more projects done if I didn't have so many projects. Housework and transmission shop take a lot of time. Always working.

I love the format of this forum compared to the Network54.

Title: Re: New Members - Introduce Yourselves Here!

    Hey Jay,

The 68 Monterey I found online back when lived in Melbourne, Florida. The car was listed for a while, I would look at it from time to time. I've never seen a 68 Monterey before that and it looked awesome----plus it was green.  Eventually, even though I had no money, I called the seller. I told him I was in the process of selling my house and moving north. But, it was going to be a few months. He said he'd wait. When I knew I was selling the house I also bid on the e-bay auction for the green and white 58 Monterey.
A month after moving to Massachusetts, I attended the 2005 Cougar Nationals in Virginia. I trailered my 69 Sport Special down there and won the mangy cat class with it. In the early morning I pulled the empty trailer down to Sandy Hook, Virginia to pick up the Monterey.  I towed it all the way to Massachusetts then took Amtrak back to Virginia to drive home the SS.
The Monterey was my daily driver for a few years---except winters. I saw a small ad in the local Wheeler Dealer asking cars from 59-70, trucks, buses, farm equipment and a telephone company truck. Well, I had a bucket truck that would fit right in for that. I sent them an e-mail telling them about the truck and how also have some other trucks and cars. They called me the next day, then sent someone out to look at the vehicles. They rented 2 Mack trucks, the bucket truck and the 68 Monterey. I was actually in the movie as the guy in the bucket in about a 2 second scene. I didn't know they were going to use the Monterey as much as they did. In one scene there were hippies laying all over it.
When I got the car back the passenger door panel had a big rip in it. They told me to send the panel to SMS auto fabrics in Oregon and they did a really nice job restoring it. So I was back to driving the car daily. Coming back from seeing the band Chicago in concert in Connecticut, I hit a deer. It put one dent in the header panel but broke the grill. Some pieces of the grill punctured the radiator so I had to get towed 60 miles back home. Gosh, that was a while ago.
The car has sat for almost 3 years with the front clip off. It is next on restore list. I will probably not put a 445 stroker in this 390. As soon as my friend gets this ugly Porsche out of his body shop I will get the Monterey in there onto the rotisserie. Probably the only addition I'd make to the car is A/C. The paint will be staying the original green. I loved this car, it drove so nice. The exhaust was strait duals with no cross over. Had that blub-blub-blub sound even at high rpms. I would love to have this car going again. I just need a garage to keep it in.
Here is a video I took of the car:

Does your dad's Monterey have an MEL? My Monterey has a 383, the Parklane has a 430.

I got to thinking about this after looking at your post and double checked, and was wrong about my Dad's car; it is a '57, not a '58, and it has the 368 in it.  He had a similar one when I was a kid and we lived in Florida, and one of my earliest childhood memories was running my hand along the concave upper part of the rear fender as I walked by the car.  He sold it in '64 to buy a four door '64 Galaxie 'cause us kids were getting bigger, but always regretted it, so he bought another on a few years ago at an auction in Phoenix.  He paid too much, but you know how it is; sometimes when an old car sparks your interest, it doesn't matter how much it costs  :D

Golly, you lived in Florida?  I grew up in South Florida--in Hollywood, Plantation and Sunrise, then moved to Melbourne for 3 years before moving to Massachusetts.

I like the 57's. Just rebuilt the trans in a 57 a few months ago. It had a 312. Those cable shift Merc-O-matics are hard to find.

Gosh, when I look at this site I have the urge to head back to the shop and work on one of the engines I have laying around. It is after 10pm. Was aready at the shop for 11 hours today.

Hi all,

Just signed up after having a read around. WOW! Blew my mind to some of the technical data you guys are discussing, well over my head a lot of it but still love reading it!

I'm in Australia, I purchased a 69 Mach 1 R-code Mustang last year from Louisiana, it was mostly all rebuilt. Got it back to Aus in May 2011, found it had a few engine issues and have only just recently pulled it down to further inspect. Time has not been my friend but hopefully this year that will change. Anyway, I found a dead lifter, stuffed cam, metal everywhere and some oil holes on the crank journals with alignment issues which are questionable so am now heading down the track of stroking it and going all new. I don't want to put anything back in that may again cause an issue, so will simply avoid that completely.

This is my first FE so I'm learning a stack along the way. I've built engines before but am still just a backyard bloke who likes to attempt anything by myself. How else do you learn right!

So that's me, look forward to learning more off you all.

Cheers,

Ash

Cool '58 Monterey. Hey, even the dog in that back seat has a smile on his face!

Funny, I just attended the 2012 Auto Show with an old friend here at Chicago's McCormick Place and commented to my buddy when I saw a two-toned paint job on a brand new production car. Many of those  old cars with two-tone paint looked mighty cool although some color combos I remember were awful  :D Still, even some of today's cars IMHO would look very cool with a two-tone paint job to break up some pretty boring panel lines or accent other sections of a car.

Been browsing the board off and on and just registered.  I'm in Littleton, CO and I have a 67 Fairlane GT that hopefully will be on the street here in the next few months.  It's been a LONG build.  It's a street/strip car and here are specs on the engine and a youtube link of the engine being dynoed, which I had posted the FE Forum.
I have much to learn, so thanks to everyone who contributes!!

Dyno: SF-901

Welcome aboard John, and that is a very impressive engine.  I was wondering if you did anything to the bottom end to beef it up, like a crossbolt kit or a girdle or anything?  That's a lot of power for the stock 2 bolt main setup.

Hi Jay and thanks.  That is a fair question and one I do get asked.  The answer is no, I did not girdle or crossbolt.  I know I may be gambling, but those #'s - 654HP/552TRQ are corrected-sea level as all dyno runs are.  In "reality here in Colorado" it's putting out around 500HP because of the altitude if I remember correctly from the dyno sheets.

If anyone has any input on my "rationale", feel free to comment.  As I said ,I have much to learn.  Maybe, this would be a good discussion to put in the FE Tech Forum.  Jay, I have the sonic test results as well that you could put in/attach, since I'm not sure how to that.  Thanks, John

I think your rationale is fine; you don't need crossbolts if you are only making around 500-550 HP due to the altitude.  I have an arbitrary horsepower number of 600 where I feel it is good to start adding crossbolted mains to the engine, but if you aren't there then no worries.

There's some information on posting photos on the forum in the following link:

If you have trouble with this you can certainly email the sonic check results to me and I'll post them in the technical forum for you - Jay

Like many of you I am a member of the Ford Fe Forum and decided to become part of this Forum as well.  If Jay was heading it up I knew it must be top notch.  For those who do not know me already, I have two 1965 Ford Galaxie 500XL's.

The 1st one I built in 1999 as a resto-mod with a 428CJ, ED heads/RPM intake, TCI C-6 with 3500 stall, 3.70 gears and a TrakLoc. After 9 years/10K miles of fun one of the 40 year old CJ rods broke at the pin and windowed the block.  I built a 445 stroker to replace it.

The other 65 XL is a P-Code 4-speed car that my dad special ordered and gave to me in 1968. I kept it until 1984 and sold it. Amazingly  in 2004 I discovered the car was in Wisconsin in the same unrestored shape it was in when I sold it.  In 2005 I purchased the car and brought it back home here in North Florida and am in the process of a frame off restoration. The chassis and body are done and I'm now starting on the engine.  The 390 solid lifter block is going to receive another 445 stroker kit.  I hope to finish the car this year.

I am glad to be part of this forum, thanks Jay for welcoming me. ww

When tractors became affordable, my Grandfather bought a Fordson tractor and when the Model T became readily available, he bought one of those. My father is almost 97 and he has never owned anything but Fomoco products.
I was brought home from the hospital in Long Beach CA in a brand new 58 Mercury Wagon and I have to assume my blood runs Ford Blue.
I currently own a 76 F-250 4X4 that I have had for over 30 years , a 68 Bronco, 2001 F-350, 2005 Explorer and my current project, a 58 Fairlane 500 2 door hardtop. The 300 HP 352 and Curiseomatic combo are coming out and a 428/ C-6 combo is going in the Fairlane.
I have built quite a few FEs , but they have been mostly stock rebuilds with maybe a cam and bolt ons. I'm looking to make my Fairlane a decent performer and figure this is THE place to gain more knowledge to help me meet that goal.
I have to share this.....when I ran the numbers on the 58 I was quite pleased to discover that it too was born in Long Beach in 1958!!!

Hello,
I am Ed Rader from Central Illinois, a long time Ford nut but still a relative newbie to the FE's as the proud owner for the past two years of an FE powered 1966 Mercury Comet Caliente that I call Sinister Edition. In an effort to introduce myself and allow me to get out to the garage a little faster the following has been cut and pasted from my Super Motors page. Ed

After waiting for nearly 30 years to replace the 1966 Fairlane 500 that I'd had in high school I stumbled either by accident or fate upon this 1966 Mercury Comet Caliente while surfing the offerings on E-bay. I am the fourth owner of this slightly upscale cousin of the Fairlane since it had sold new way back in 1966. When I purchased the car in June 2010 it had 47,000 original miles, it retained its original interior and it had been repainted only once in 2007. Other than paint and the addition of a Glaspac dual exhaust system the car was entirely untouched and I have retained all of the original parts so that it may be returned to its original state although at this point that seems unlikely.
Starting in October 2010 I began to modify the drive train; the first build up was a .020 over 390 with the same C6AE-R iron heads described above, a Comp Mutha Thumpr cam (for that sound), a Weiand intake manifold and a 600cfm Summit carb. This was soon removed due to a sticking valve that bent when it contacted a piston shortly after the break-in procedure had been completed and while being driven for the first time with just 20 miles on the build.
As the heads were being gone through for a second time and the bent valve was replaced it was decided to move towards more of a street and strip performer so a solid lift Comp 282S cam was swapped in, a pair of FPA headers were added with 3in exhaust and a Holley 750cfm carb was set on top while the rest of the short block remained. With around 500 total miles on this engine a knock could be heard and pulling the engine once more revealed that the number 5 rod bearing had spun on the crank.
Those fated attempts at more ponies have led to the current build as it was detailed above. The 445ci stroked 390 is now pounding out 456 dyno proven horse power with a twisting force of 476 foot pounds torque all while appearing as menacing as a gentleman in a business suit (think MadMen).

Hello everyone.  I'm a semi-regular on the Network54 FE forum, Tod Buttermore.  Some of you know my history with the aftermarket FE.  I'm currently working on bringing my Cleveland project to market as well as a new Model A block.  Who knows, maybe another FE will come to be with some changes I have incorporated into a new design.  First things first, though.

So my intro is that I'm "only" 41 but I grew up with FE's.  My dad always had strong running FE's.  Through pics here;
That 55 Merc we found in WV.  A guy had dropped a 428 PI in it.  It ran great. I was going to put the engine in my 69 Q-code Mach (that's me, age 15, with all my junk).  I got the insurance estimate and due to the VIN, not even my dad could afford the insurance.  Heart broken, I sold it all and hopped in a Mustang Pace Car, 4cyl turbo.  I went on to race and build 351, 302 and 460 stuff as parts were more available.  I worked inside Ford (supplier to chassis and fuel system division for 15 years, Mech Engr.) I have a pump-gas, street driven 5.0L Mustang, best effort 10.69@127.
Dad's pulling truck was a terror in Super Stock where smaller tires were mandatory.  427 side oiler, steel crank, LeMans Rods, 13:1, 427 LR heads and a Holley 950 3 barrel.  As pictured it had a 452 ci HR set up for the Mod class.  He was nuts and would rev these things over 8,000.  Spit out a lot of driveline parts.
The 69 Cobras; red he bought new, Drag Pak 3.91 4spd, ran 13.2@104 pure stock.  Green was a CJ 4spd belonging to his brother.
The 66 Fairlane pic from 1968 "avatar" had a 427 MR with domed pistons, big cam.  Broke the rear 13 times.  I am told by the most jaded critic (my uncle) that car's power was impressive.

My name is Dave Bickler. I live in eastern Ohio along the banks of the Ohio river. I'm an old guy (65) but that can be both good and bad. The bad ..... I'M OLD. The good ..... I grew up in the '60s which was prime time for muscle cars. I've owned two FE powered cars in my life. A '66 Fairlane GTA which I bought from my Dad when I came back in October '67 from that small country in southeast Asia whose name begins with the letter V ( 1st Cavalry Division - Airmobile). My Dad bought it new in 66, I think he thought it was an economy car! I loved that car even though is was an automatic in the days when you were not a man if you didn't drive a stick. I traded the Fairlane in October '68 for my second FE powered car and I think I got a good one. It was a '69 Mustang Mach 1, 428 CJ, 4-speed. I ordered an optional axle ratio of 3:91 but the car was built with 4:30s. I didn't know it at the time but that of course made it an SCJ. I got into drag racing the car in the early '70s, rebuilt the engine etc. and ran a best of 11.88. This was considered respectable for the time. I still own the car, now restored to near concours condition, and drive it on nice days. I still get the itch to put it back on the track from time to time but common sense tells me I'd be taking a big chance with the original drive train.

So that's my story. I like this Forum and the knowledge base about these great engines. Did I mention my car has over 500 runs down the strip without a single broken part.

Here's my old heap:

Hi, I'm Chad, and I'm an FE addict.  Mostly to the enduring engineering wonder that it is, but also to the fun it adds to my toys and it's near infinite combination of configurations.  My first dose was my dad's 1963 1/2 Galaxie 500XL R-code.  Peering over the fender at that pair of carbs and the cast iron headers set my path forever.  My first tire-boiling, powershifting ride was pure bliss.  Drag racing has been in my extended family since before I was a wicked thought, and it's still my favorite motorsport.  First drag race:  Bowling Green, Kentucky, 1975, age 5, supporting my uncle Ed's (the Bohemian Bulldozer!) campaign for a national title.  Wandered the pits solo all day, nosing around where I had no business, nobody seemed to care.  I haven't had much track time lately, but soon I hope to be crewing on my buddy Mick's new jet dragster, maybe pilot it a time or two.

I toyed with other Fords and Mercs over the years, and have ended up with my 1964 Galaxie P-code (HD suspension, 390/Toploader) and my 1967 F-100 (240 I-6) cruiser.  Unfortunately dad's R-code is long gone, but he's got a 1964 Comet/289 that we play with from time to time.  Someday I'll finish the 427LR I'm collecting parts for and stuff it in the Galaxie.

Long ago, I was a small part of the Usenet/AHPBBFM community, but tired of the urinary Olympics (did Rick ever finish one of his cars? did hurricane ever stop trolling?).  By the time most of that traffic had migrated to fordfe, I had abandoned the 'tubes for vehicular interaction, and focused on playing with my cars and the other humans I shared space with.  A friend of mine sent me a link to a thread here; seeing the technical discussions moved me to join.  Thanks to Jay for getting the ball rolling, this looks to be a great community.  I've received a copy of Jay's book (thanks for the prompt ship!) and have almost finished it.  I'll be posting some questions after I re-read it to make sure I'm not asking any questions that have already been answered.  Next book on deck will be Barry's.

My name is Kevin McCullah. I was born and raised in Grand Junction CO. I'm a young guy in the FE world. (my odometer turned 42 yesterday :D) I feel so privileged to be a member here, with what has got to be the absolute braintrust of the FE engine. I post a little on the "other" FE forum but mainly just read threads and try to keep my head down, if you know what I mean.
When I was 14 I took an interest in machining and worked as an apprentice at a local machine shop for 5 years. I currently work in an industrial laundry as a plant mechanic/electrician. Before this job I spent 10 years as a plant mechanic/machinist with Coors. No not the brewery, the technical ceramic division. They made ceramic ballistic tiles for armoring the interiors of Humvee's, Striker vehicles and Abrams tanks. I also work part-time for a company called Western Slope Industries where I started as a machinist in 1989. I build machinery that folds and glues paper boxes.
I got the FE bug from my dad. He raced drag cars, circle track, sand hill climbs, mud drags and tractor pulls. All with FE's. His last big effort was in 1985. He raced in the Colorado hill climb circuit. His car was a 74' Torino with a 427 HR. It was a tough gig on a blue collar salary.
Since my divorce in 2009, I've experienced an FE revival. I finally finished building a 390 that I started in high school. I dropped it into 1972 highboy that dad bought when I was 6 and have been racing the crap out of it. It feels good to have a hobby and compete.
I will be starting some kind of FE stroker project soon. Will post my progress.

Hello,
Joel Reynolds here from Perth in western Australia.
I'm a bit of a virgin in regards to FE engines.
I've ended up with a 1965 galaxie LTD 2 door with a thunderbird special 390.
I had no idea the  FE existed until I purchased the galaxie.
I am a ford man and also a mechanic by trade.
Built a few race engines but normally motorbikes.
I'm hooked on the Fe it's such a cool old school engine with so much potential
And a fantastic online community with wealths of information.
I also own a 1938 Nash and a 1977 c10 ute.
But it's the ford I love and the FE which I'm currently building
Thanks
Joel

Hello,
Mark Pacey from Ipswich Qld Australia ,i am a mechanic by trade but i have spent the last 30 years working in Open Cut  coal mining. My first Ford was a 1969 XW Falcon GTHO Candy Apple red with a tan interior a great car should never had sold it . After raising a family i was able to buy a 67 390 GT Mustang 4 speed Fastback . This car has had a hard life and i am sure it could tell a few stories especially the 3 bullet holes through the rear floor . . After 10 years it is slowly being close to being finished Silver in colour i have fitted a TKO 600 a Total control rear suspension and a 4.125 stroker kit through Barry R is being built .The engine will run a Tri Power fuel injection system built by F&B throttle bodies with a FAST xfi .Hope to have it on the road before December .I am quite lucky as the local Drag strip and Circuit race track are only a short drive from home so looking foward to driving the mustang .Great forum keep up the great work guys .

Just joined and wanted to say that I've learned alot from the FEForum and Jay's book as well as Barry R's book.
I bought my first FE powered PU in 1967 (1965 model) and have had 3  Ford PU's since. But currently a 4th with a 460.
My local buddy's and I built 2 1956 fords in the late 60's with 427 side oilers and econoline axles for Woodward Ave. "excursions" and had a great and profitable time.

I still have my 1965 Comet HT I bought new in Rochester Mi and put away in 1972. (56,000 miles) but never saw snow.
Now my projects are my: -1948 Lincoln Ford 390 3X2 --  a 3spd toploader and a mild 9" rear with 4 bar. ( my Avatar)

Hi Y'all,
I'm Bruce Selby, born 1949 in Long Beach, CA.  I'm a mechanical engineer working in the petroleum industry.  I've been driving and working on FEs almost my whole life.  I saw the first one under the hood of my Mom's 58 T-Bird.  Since then I've owned a 61 Starliner 352 with 3 on the floor, a 63 Galaxie fastback with a P-Code 390, 67 F100 with 352, and a 67 Mustang GT 390 4-speed (13.8 @ 103 at Orange County Raceway).  I'm currently completing an overseas assignment at which time another FE project will get underway!  I'm thinking of another 61 Starliner... lots of FE possibilities there!  Anyone have ideas for it?
Btw, the picture has my current pride and joy, a 66 Fairlane 500 I found locally.  It was rough but all original and now has a coat of mystic blue metallic paint and a torquey 347 stroker small-block.
Really enjoying the forum, as well as Jay's and Barry's books.  You guys are really pushing the FE envelope!  looking forward to learning and contributing.

^^^ Nice ride Bruce! After just installing headers I'm really starting to envy guys with the torquey small blocks.  ;D

Scott and all,
I took an easy way and used repro small block hipo exhaust manifolds port-matched to the Roush 200 heads.  Then I sent them to Jet-Hot and had them coated a dark gray to look like cast iron... Without doing the coating, in the Houston climate they would look like balls of rust in no time!  Stainless bolts from ARP too.  Bet that coating would work well on the FE cast headers!

I had popped in a few weeks ago with an intake / carb question, but missed the newbie thread here!

My name is Ed Nicholson, I live in Caledon Ontario, which is about 30 minutes NW of Toronto.  Been playing with cars for 30+ years now, and I have been a Ford dealer parts guy for just over 20 years.  This is my first FE-powered ride, a 66 Thunderbird Town Hardtop.  It has the base engine, which was the 390-4V Z code unit, all stock at this point.  Car is a nice solid cruiser that was brought up from California, around 10 years ago according to the previous owner.  It needs a full cosmetic resto to be super nice, for now it's just a good driver.

First "mod" to the 390 is going to be these Moon valve covers that I picked up, and did some detailing on:

I had been thinking about a multi-carb intake to add some underhood eye candy, but have been pretty much talked out of using one of the old school aftermarket castings.  I guess if a good deal on an OEM Thunderbird 3x2 intake comes my way, I'll have to jump on it!

cheers
Ed

Those are cool valve covers, and would look good with the oval air cleaner on top of the tripower setup.  Good luck on the search...

For now, to go on the 4V Autolite I have an air cleaner like this Edelbrock piece, but a no-name without the logo:

Another new guy here.  I've been on the Network54 FE site for a long time, don't post much but check it frequently.  After seven years (long story there) finally got my '63 Marauder on the road with quite a bit of help.  Hoping to work out the bugs in the next few months and have a decent street car for the summer.  Original Z code/auto car, converted to T10 for now as I got a great package deal on all the conversion parts.  Running the original 3.00 rear now, going to be putting together a Trak Lok with used 3.50s in a standard carrier after I finish moving and pop them in to see how they work.

Car was a mess, the RF fender, R door, both rockers, and both quarters have been replaced.  Not very "original" in any way, or valuable, so decided to set it up with an early/mid '60s street style.  Running a '78 LTD disc brake setup in front, but otherwise stock suspension, PS, manual brakes.

Motor consists of:
.030" 390 105 block
750DP
Performer RPM
Edelbrocks 60069 with some bowl work and valve job.  It's been too long to remember details, but they flow right at 270/195 @ .600" as I recall
Comp 270H 224/224 .519/.519 installed at 106ICA on 110LSA
9.5:1 with TRW forged pistons (model no. not handy)
Stock crank and rods with ARP bolts
Canton windage tray with stock pan
MSD Distributor and 6A ignition
FPA 1 3/4" tri y's to non-mandrel 2.5" exhaust

Still finalizing wheels/tires.  Cragars on their now are OK, but also have a set of Torque Thrusts for it, will likely end up 275/60/15, so basically 28" tire.  Car had worn out springs in it and now with the new springs the front tires are too short, going to a 225/75/15.

Goal is to be a reliable street car.  Hoping it can go low 13s, possibly high 12s in good air.  Probably ambitious but we'll see, definitely will take a lot of tuning/tweaking from where it is now.

Will be asking a bunch of questions as I get to work on the little remaining items, great forum you guys have here!!

Hello All, Mike Howard here. I am a registered member on several of the Ford forums, and the HAMB. I use the same name on all of them, and I generally do not post much unless I have first hand, on topic info, but I do read a ton.

I have several projects in various states of build or completion, and really enjoy the time I get to spend in my Barn with them and my buddies.

This is my current FE project, and as with the rest of my projects, I take a great deal of pride in doing most all my own work, (although I have had one professionally built Cleveland engine done for me in the past).

It is a 69 Cougar XR7 I bought in 85 and drove as a daily driver for a couple years before breaking it down to make a hot street car out of. That was prior to getting married, which sidelined the project for about 15 years. It is now back on track, and I have collected a nice set of tunnel port heads and  2x4 intake for it, along with a pile of NOS items before they became impossible to find like the complete grill, most all of the chrome, and a NOS quarter panel that I sawed up so the tires would fit.

Thanks for the space, Mike H.

Howdy from west Texas, y'all.  Not much to tell here - we're a his-n-hers bracket race family with a couple of pretty decent play cars.  No FEs in the house but I've followed Jay's work from the other FE list.  Keeping up with what people are doing is always good because you never know what tidbit of info might apply to what you are doing.  I typically run 351C stuff but that's getting scarce around here. We'll see.  My car has the spare 302 in it now because the last C came apart after two race seasons.   I'm considering modding the Falcon to take a 400 block so I can reuse the good heads and some of the other parts at least.  We moved in the winter of 2010 and 2011~2012 was spend building a new work shop, so no car stuff got done at all.  Spent all the money, so maybe next year  :D  I'd like to do the 4 door a bit like what Mike is doing to the Cougar.  Spent my allowance for the next 3-4 years on the shop, so...sometime!

This is my first text.  Found this site last nite.  Enjoyed reading about all the troubles everyone else has and the solutions all you respond too. I am building a 69 Merc Cougar XR7 GT390 Convertable. Have had the car for 19 yrs. Have put 35000 miles on it and havent drove it for 8 yrs. Did the real stupid thing to it.  Had the oil changed and put synthics oil in and 700 miles the cam went flat.
Thats when I learned about Zinc the and Phosporus not being in the oil anymore. Lifes a hard lesson.  Oh well.

For the last 2 yrs I have been building the 390 with new parts and I am in the assembly stage. Had the block squared and parelled and the machinist had to remove .023 off the top. now I have a new problem pistons stick out .015, .018, .016, .012 on both sides are the same so the machinist did his job. Now I will have the pistons shaved to try for .040 quinch. Then its time to check piston to valve clearence.

Have Edel. heads and intake T&D roller rockers Crane roller cam Speed Pro forged pistons Eagle rods stock 2U cast steel crank and much more. thanks for reading.  Clifford

New guy here
Met Ross in Huskerland a couple months ago. Was back in Omaha visiting family and attending the huskers last home game. Wanted to meet the guy that is such a great contributor to this and the Fe Ford forum.  Unfortunately  his BBstang  was retired for the winter and out of sight.
Car wise I have  a couple of projects.
Found a 68 FB S code  4 speed at an estate auction couple of years ago. Only 6 guys showed up for the car portion of the auction as all  the gals were inside bidding of sticks, dishes et all.   Runs and drives great needs some tlc on paint and interior  but lucked out in that its a rust free car save the cancer spots next to the front shock towers.  Had  128 K, factory 4 speed, had NOT  been screwed with, came with bench seat and 8 K  tach dash.  No 2 stang is an S code 68 convert found  with no drivetrain  except rear end.  Paint all faded  down to primer and top full of holes.  Have found  a good 390 and toploader  with FPAs, Edel heads intake and water pump.   Cosmetics easy but costly to mend once I get my two daughters out of College(3 years)  Until then I need to be very creative finding funds to play with for the Stangs

Talk to you soon - Ross

Hi, New guy here from PA. After a few years of small and big block fox bodies. I figured it was time to jump into a FE project. Picked up a 2 owner 59 Edsel Ranger, 292 3 speed car. Current plan is a  mild 390 with a T-10 to work the bugs out.

Ops! Sorry Jay I missed this.

 Hello All,
My name is Kris Rachford and I'm an addict lol. I'm from Northern Ky just south of Cincinnati, Oh by about 30 minutes. I'm getting ready to turn the ripe old age of 36 on March 1st. I married my high school sweetheart in 1999 and we have two boys. Gage is 8 and Nash just turn 1. I've been deployed in Afghanistan for the last two years working as a DOD Civilian Electrician doing inspections and repairs on the U.S. Military bases over here. I started in the electrical field the summer of '95 when I graduated high school. My Dad's friend got me into the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 212 out of Cincinnati where I went through a 5 year apprenticeship program to receive my Journeyman's License. After that I went on and took classes to become a certified structural welder and also went on to get my Masters License as well. Most of my background is in PLC / Motor controls / plant automation / HVAC Temperature Control System and UL Listed Panel building. After spending the previous 5 years doing estimating and project managing for the company I was with. I've always wanted to be self employed and have my own Electrical business. I also spend quit a bit of time doing work for Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Oh. Working there I learned about the electrical issues that our men and women in uniform were facing over here and it was not good. Most people don't know this but we've lost over 270 Soldiers between Iraq and Afghanistan due to electrocution. Mainly in wet locations/facilities such as showers, kitchens and laundry. So when the opportunity came up for me to come over here and do my part to help out thats what I did. Other than being away from my family I have no regrets. Most of these guys over here are fresh out of basic and really don't have many skills especially electrical so its a good feeling to be able to give these guys a safe place to live when they come back from a mission.

Anyways, this is about FE's. I was born in '77 and at that time my Dad had been working for Ford for about 15 years I guess and he had also been into drag racing for about the same amount of time. For the most part they were all FE's. Dad had some very healthy small block Chevies and a few 409's but once he bought the '64 Galaxie in 1965 which was a 427 8v 4 speed car that did it in for brand X. I'll post a pic below of his '64 but I believe that started it all. Dad raced this car in Super Stock and Modified Production for a few years where the car ran some 11:70's back in the 60's so that was a pretty healthy low riser for its time and it was his daily driver to and from work as well as some street racing. In 1971 Dad bought the '69 Cobra off of a friend of his and in '72 Dad took it to Indy they bent an exhaust valve in one of the first rounds of Class Eliminations and eventually runnered up to the Nation Record holder at that time which was another FE in the Long Brothers 428 Cyclone. Not a bad finish on 7 cylinders. With this car Dad and friends went on to set a couple National Records and they also won Class at Indy and the Sports Nationals about 5 times from '78 through '85. A couple guys drove the car over the years, Jerry Greenham and John Ulrey took turns rowing the gears. Some of you will probably recognize the names John and Mike Ulrey who were backed by Ford through the years. John and Mike raced many Fords one was a '69 Mach 1 that they did very well with. Dad ended up with this car for a little while. It had less than 100 original miles on it. I believe John won the Div 3 championship with it but I don't remember what year that was. High Performance FE's is all I've been around and that's all I know. Growing up I've help my Dad build dozens of engines for his costumers and ourselves. Dad left Ford in the early 80's and started his own automotive repair and body shop and ran that for about 22 years before he retired. With Dad starting his own business the Cobra got parked in '87 until I started racing it in '93 when I turned 16. I've been bracket racing it ever since and I've always wanted to put the car back in Stock Eliminator where it belongs. So I'm in the process of doing just that. I've got a new Stocker motor coming from Blair Patrick and I look forward to enjoy racing with my family and teaching my boys about FE's. Sorry for the winded Introduction but like the first sentence said. I'm an addict lol.

Below is a pic of the '64 Galaxie. We've also got a '64 Comet that I want to make into a mean little street cruiser but I don't have a pic of that on my computer.

Kris, not too wordy at all especially when the subject is FEs   :)  the Galaxie looks awesome in Vintage Burgundy, and the Cobra not too shabby also!  I've just acquired a '63 Fastback, 2 tone Peacock Blue and Corinthian White. Where are you working at if you don't mind me asking? Working over here has opened my eyes to a lot of things especially all the oversea contract work that goes on. Its always interesting to hear.

Kris,
I'm working in Kazakhstan as an engineering mgr. for a major oil co. joint venture. It's my 3rd Intl. posting and my wife and I will return home next month.  Yes, there are lots of expats, employees and contractors, working in these places and not without challenges... But that's why we're here after all!  We've made lots of good friends and good memories too.

Looking forward to getting back and making that Galaxie safe - and legal.  New brakes and seat belts are high on the list!  Then to think about what to do with that old 352...

Bruce, the world does get small man.  My son was at Manas AFB in Kyrgyzstan when they had the coup in 2010.  While was there he also wound up in Kazakhstan on occasion.  It seems to me that the thing he found most odd about that area was seeing all these people who looked for all in the world to be Chinese, then hearing them all speak Russian.  :o  LOL

Hello all,
My name is Doug Smith. I've been lurking on here since Jay started the sight, but just now coming out of the closet...so to speak  :)
You could say I'm a refugee from another sight where people aren't so polite. It got old and I got out after being a member since its beginning.

Never said much about my background, but my Dad worked at the Lima engine plant for 30 years and was a die-hard Ford man. I grew up with 10 acres, over 100 Fords, in my back yard. No, it wasn't a junk yard, he just bought every old Ford he came across. Had almost every year from 1935 to 1970 (with a couple of Model As in the mix)....obviously with several of certain years and styles. Mercs, Comets, Falcons, trucks, Galaxies, COEs....you name it, it was there. I can't possibly think of a better way to grow up. I was really blessed with a great Dad.

I started helping my Dad rebuilding engines and working on cars when I was old enough to walk out into the garage. He started me out by cleaning parts etc. and eventually I got to the point as a teenager where he would let me do most of the work. It was always flatheads then, and my love for flatheads has never wavered. In fact I'll be starting on a super clean '53 F100 here this year. Going to do a fifties style mild custom with a Merc stroker engine, finned heads and dual Strombergs. Next to the FE, nothing looks as cool as a dressed flathead!

But as I grew up, my passion for performance led me to the FE, and that is where my heart lies. I've currently got 3 FE powered vehicles that I drive, a '68 F250 4wd Highboy with a mild 390 out of a '64 Merc, a stock (for now) 390 in a '65 Galaxie, and my dream car that I bought when I was 15.....a 1969 R-code Mach 1 with a complete 427 SO Medium Riser with dual 4 intake. It's factory iron with unported MR heads, and a std. bore block and steel crank. Built just the way Ford built it back in the day. The car is my version of what a factory 427 Mustang should have been if Ford had actually built one. And a 4-spd of COURSE!  :)
My Dad let me buy it when I was 15 by wiping out my bank account (all $250 of it..haha) and I paid cash. Yes, I paid $250 for a rust free R-code...minus engine. Things were much cheaper then! My first car purchase, and one I will pass on to my son. My Dad is an awesome man and I owe him more than I could ever say!

Currently I am the only mechanic on grounds at a private university. I have over 50 vehicles and over 50 pieces of large equipment that I work on and take care of. Anything from weed eaters to big JD tractors. And yes, it's too much for one person, but it is what it is and I like the varied work I do. Boring is NOT a word to describe it...lol

Anyway, I am very happy to be a member of this forum and I hope that I can occasionally contribute and help people in at least a small way. I do love all Fords (and all cool cars in general) and the FE in particular.
Good health to all.

Thanks, Jay and Bruce.
I admit, Jay, I do like a clean engine compartment and keep up on any leaks and repainting occasionally. To me, it's the focal point of the car.
Bruce, it's pretty peppy to say the least, but really can't compare to some of the engines on here. I keep fighting the urge to put a stroker in it, but I like the fact that it's all Ford iron. Still, I'm not real good at fighting temptation  :)

Welcome aboard Doug, really nice rides you have there. You've definitely invested some time keeping it that clean. More pics of the rest of the herd would be nice!

Thanks, Scooter. I did forget to add a '70 F350 dumptruck that I have, but with a stock 360 it's not much to brag about.
Here are the other rides....

Ron from the hills of southwestern PA here.  Land of long winters and short summers..  :-[ :-[  I'm writing this from my winter quarters in Myrtle Beach, SC - just couldn't take the cold anymore..   :( :( :(

58 years old, co-owner, with my younger brother, of a company that installs/repairs/maintains elevators.  Ford blue since day 1!!

In the 70's/80's/90's I did a pile of small-blocks, Cleveland/M's and FE's, but have been away from the scene for abt 15 years or so.

WOW, has the 'Net changed things!!  I remember all too well going to speed and machine shops to get parts or some work done, way back when, and, if it wasn't an SBC, all you got was a blank look..   >:(  Now, a google and piles of info pops up - although it seems opinions are pretty common, readily espoused, and rabidly defended.

Glad to be here, and learning more all the time!   ;)

You never know everything, and if you're smart, you never stop learning!!

Best name ever for a car or pretty much anything. ;D

HA HA HA!!!   I couldn't think of anything that Marauder wouldn't be a good name for.   My wife, which is pregnant didn't see Marauder in the Book of Baby Names.

Hi guys, I finally joined after awhile of reading. Im building a 62 Falcon with an FE BT dual 4 and 4speed. Almost half way done :)

Im building it myself, even built the headers myself since they never made any Falcons with a 390.

Sounds like a cool project; I love the old Falcons.  Got any pictures?  What did you do with the shock towers to make the FE fit?

Edit - Just saw your post in the Member Projects section; thanks for the pics.

Hi Everyone, new to the forum, not so new to FE’s. Had a number of 352’s, 361 Edesl”s, 390’s some 427 stuff over the years, and did a really neat 406 to crossbolted 432 tripower with C3AE-J heads build years ago. Been away from it for a decade and a half. Now have a P-code 4 speed ’64 convertible and a Q code ’63 fastback to build respective engines for.

I’ve acquired the major pieces to do the 427 build, but that will wait for latter as time and $$ permit. For now, I’m doing a build to plant in the P-code car. It’s in some respects, similar to the 432 build I did years ago. Difference is, my head is spinning now. Where did all this great aftermarket support and interest come from??? There was nothing available like now last time I messed with these things. I’m totally loving it!

So, I’ve been lurking here, and the other FE forum, keeping my mouth shut, reading, learning, re-learning, and taking it all in. I quickly discovered Jay and Barry are respected, published, and enthusiastic FE people. I did the only right thing, and bought their respective books. Barry’s book is so well laid out, just read the chapters and follow along as you build. Plainly written for regular folks looking to do a good job. How refreshing. Jays book… what can I say, WOW!!! It simply amazes me that something this scientific and such a systematic approach came from the bowels of a fellows garage with help of buddies who just wanted to do a good job. I’d argue that there may be no finer finished published piece that is anywhere close to this book, in any other engine venue. AAA+++ Jay!

Sourced a 391 pump engine. Stripped it down, low time unit I’m glad to say. Cyl. walls in good order to go to 4.130. Took a shot in the dark, and reached out to Jay for some guidance form the fellow with the real world dyno experience / build experience, and knowledge. Simply delightful to correspond with him and come up with a basic build blueprint. Once pointed in the right direction, contacted Barry R. and equally delighted! Good fellows these two are.

I’ll begin a thread in the members project forum soon, and begin to share more details as the build unfolds. As it stands, Barry is having 4.130 pistons made, and the 4.25” kit is coming together.

Thanks everyone, for having such a great pool of knowledge and supporting such a great and formally neglected piece of Ford history!

Jim

Just a quick note to introduce myself.  In 1976 when I was 16 my dad gave me my first car (he did this for all 3 of "his boys").  We had always been a Ford family, so of course I got a Ford.  A 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL in Pagoda Green with a 352, automatic, A/C and power steering.  Although dad is gone (the first person that put a wrench in my hand and I still miss him), I still have that car today.

After marriage, other issues took priority and the car sat outside neglected for years.  I even had a few people stop by and try to buy the car.  We later moved to a house with a garage and about 12 years ago I began to restore the old Galaxie.  It took me about 2 years but I got it all done.  Freshened up the engine, yeah I did that work.  Redo the interior, yeah I did that with a kit from Melvin's Classic Ford Parts (I can't sew!)  Paint, yeah I did that also (I'm cheap like that, ask my wife).

I've been lurking since this forum opened up but decided to join today.  The site looks great Jay.

Hi everyone. My name is Ross from the salt covered roads of Michigan. I've been a Ford guy since birth, but my love for the FE started when I was a kid when my dad picked up our '67 Cougar XR-7 GT. I always wanted a '64 Galaxie fastback, and I was lucky enough to pick one up last year. It's a rust free 390 cruise-o car with a 3.00 rear. Over this winter/spring I'll be working on building a 445 for it. It's neat being the only person my age that doesn't drive late-model stuff.

Hi everyone.
New to the forum, watched a while and decided t participate. I come from all ford family, when I was 12 we shingled our house and when the family all showed up there was 25 fords and 1 dodge, but dad said they married in. NOT KIDDING. Driving a 76 250 4x4 on the farm when I was 8. First car was a 76 150 with a 360. First paycheck got set of blackjack headers. Lasted years even with daily 5500 rpm valve floats. Next was a 72 highboy with 390 and 38" tires. Motor got tired so I put in .60 over 428 with cam, headers, street master, and 780 Carb. Loved it. Then a 68 fairlane, 12to1 390 427f intake 850 Carb and super comp headers. Then 69 torino 428 drag pack car. I now own 67 Fastback, used to be the Potent Pony from Bandemier, points champ 78 and 79. Has a 427 medium riser dove top end with top loader. Also have 67 gta fairlane with 12 to one comp. With dove top end. Projects we also have is a 65 falcon and wife's 67 mustang coupe. I love the forum and look forward to learn and share knowledge. Thanks Jay for having me on this forum. P.s. When I get cut, I bleed ford blue.  Jaime.

Hi Folk, I'm John. You may see me across several other sites as well. I don't make a lot of posts, just trying to soak up some information.
I have been hauling a 67 Mustang Coupe 390, 4-speed car from place to place with me and the family for the last 25 years. It's time to for the car to be drivable. We dropped it off at the body shop last week for sheet metal repair and paint. I will take care of the mechanical with the help of the forums. It's going back to Lime Gold Green, the interior color is still up for discussion. The four speed will get swapped for a T-56. The FPA headers have been bought, along with a Borgeson box.

John - that's a great car you have there.  I had a 67 GT notchback in high school (around 1978).  Lime gold, black interior, 390 4-speed.  Drove it home for $400, did a valve job, fixed the brakes, installed a set of 68 bucket seats, Maaco paint job (gold), then sold it for $1,000.  I kept my Silver-Blue Fairlane GT from high school, but didn't keep this one.

New guy but not so new!?  :o

I cant believe I missed this! Most of you guys know me but for those who dont. My name is Wes Adams and I have been on the other FE Forum for years. Had a few FE BBQ's, got out and drove 1/2 way across the states to meet some FE people, did The Poor Mans 427 and some other stuff in the past.

I have been a long time FE fan and love the sound of a well tuned FE. My second choice of Ford engine is the 335 but lean more on the FE side of the house. I too bought both Books from Barry and Jay! I was lucky enough to have Jay sign my book. I'm hopping to get Barry to do the same LOL. Excellent by the way. Some of the best reading to date on FE's.

I have a few cars that I want to finish building here soon. One is a 55 Ford F-100 and the other is a 64 Falcon. Both will have FE's... 428's in them. Solid roller cam street cars (so to speak). Also other builds but I will saved for later.

Its nice to get back in the game. I have been away for a while (on and off). Kids, Jobs, medical issues and such has really slowed down my projects. So they took a back seat ride for some time now. Knock on wood, things are looking better and better as time goes. I hope to be able to provide help when needed and put a positive spin on stuff! I'm very glad to still be here and able to share what we all love... "FE's"! Go get some!!!

  Thanks for having me here!!!

Nice intro Wes, guess I'll follow suit...

I've loved cars since I was big enough to play with Hotwheels.  My family mostly had Chevys so my first car was a rusted-out '74 Nova I bought in about '79. Grew up in Michigan, hah.  Right away first thing I did was rebuild the carburetor.  Looking back, I'm sure it didn't need it but there was no way I was NOT going to take something apart.  Well it didn't run any better afterward but at least it wasn't worse so I guess I started out ok.  A few years later when I was in the army my roommate was a major gearhead very into fords.  He helped me fix up another much less rusty Nova and taught me a ton of shade-tree tricks.   And he never begrudged me for driving a Chevy.  I think we both just loved cool cars no matter what flavor.

Fast forward a few years and a few hotrods and marriage and kids put me out of any kind of fun vehicles for a good long time. Eventually child support helped keep me in econo boxes even longer!  Finally in 2010 I found my dream hotrod, the '65 Galaxie.  Well it's wasn't my dream car at first but it grew on me  ;)  I've done all kinds of stuff to this car including rebuilding the suspension and steering, building and installing about 4 different engines in it and swapping it over from the C-O-M tranny to the TKO 600.  Got another engine swap coming up real soon (more horsepower!!) and no end in sight to all the improvements I hope to do.  Interior resto looks like it's coming up on the horizon, maybe I'll get that done this year...  Being an apartment dweller, I do my mechanic work at the machine shop where I work, and I don't have room for extra cars so the Galaxie is my driver as well as my project.  It goes everywhere every day and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Fashionably late, Wes and Wade?...LOL
Wes, that's a pretty common ailment when life gets in the way of your hobbies! A house has taken up the last 7 of my years. Finally getting back into my many projects....more for sanity than anything  ;D
By the way, for the first 10-11 years of the 335 or "Lima" engine, whether it's a 429 or 460, there's a 1 in 4 chance that my Dad put the heads on it. :) He started working there the second year of it's opening. Retired in '89.

And Wade, you've made some real progress on your '65! Keep on truckin!

Last 7 years have been really tough. Raising a family, Cancer, Lost family members and very close friend and almost lost my life too... I needed to be grounded again and the FE is one of my grounding points in life. I really feel its time to get back to my ROOTS! LOL Bills are paid and the family is happy... You know, hobbies come back again and doing the things you love. Maybe we can make some FE History again.... Or just enjoy the time spent. Maybe that's the easy thing to do. Glad to be here!

Thanks for those intros, guys, its great stuff.  I had to bail out of cars myself from the late '80s, when I went back to college at age 30, until about 2003 when my kids got big enough so that I could leave them alone in the house and work on the cars in the garage, without having to worry about them burning down the house or killing each other LOL!  Wes, I know exactly what you mean by getting back to your roots with an FE powered car; that is exactly how I felt when I got back into the car hobby in 2003.  Like a missing piece of my life had returned...

Very true Jay! I miss doing write up's... What works and find out other things dont work on the FE. I think the biggest thing is exactly like you said Jay. Part of my void will be filled again! The best part is having contact with everyone. Beside building a great FE, comes building great Friendships. Maybe I'm starting to become more sentimental in my older age now LOL
Title: Re: New Members - Introduce Yourselves Here!
Post by: Lenz on January 27, 2014, 07:30:52 PM
Hello all, I do believe Wes is right about filling a void.  My name is Len Zielinski, I'm 57 going on 18 (or so I've been told :)).  I would be the first to agree that life can get in the way of fun, reading the other intro's shows a common thread.  Grew up on a farm, learned to build what I needed there.  My first car was a '64 Fairlane model kit manufactured by AMT which I quickly optioned out as far as the plastic would take me.  I brush painted it with half-dried Testor's green, made a God-awful mess of it.  Pretty sure I literally cried, at least my older brother said I did.

My first real car was a '69 390 LTD, beat the snot out of it but never broke it.  I then went over to the dark side.  Had a string of Chevys, a 70 SS 396 Chevelle, a '57 coupe, '56 210 post and a '61 Impala Conv.  Shortly after I got the '61 life moved in on me and set up shop.  I worked days, built engines and painted cars in my garage nights.  Ever since I was 20 I've driven Ford trucks because I could convince everyone they were practical.  My favorite was my '74 F250 390 4 x 4 4 speed.  Rolled that over and rebuilt it too.  If you hit a tree just right while rolling the hood will crush down across the core support and hold your FE in place even if you've ripped out both motor mounts.  As a bonus, if the truck lands on it's right side the back glass is long gone and you can just walk right out ;)

I bought the '57 Custom Tudor I sold through this forum from Texas through my brother in 2005.  Figured I'd do like I always did, build my own.  I got nowhere as I found out I had less time than before (5 grandkids will slow ya down a might :P).  It was my brother who reminded me about what I really wanted, the '64 Fairlane without a hand brushed paint job and a 427 between the trimmed shock towers.  I set out to find one to build and found my '64 Galaxie instead.  Always liked the '64's and it reminded me of one I saw in a wheels up photo in Hot-Rod once a few years back.  Seeing the FE under the hood sealed it, I was going back to where I belonged all along, rod knock and all.

My wife sideswiped the car in our driveway last September, did $3,600 to her Escape.  The Galaxie only needs some left front fender work and a piece of stainless trim which I've already purchased.  I advised her that since I have to pull the fender I might as well contact Barry at Survival Motorsports to pick up a few critical components to address that pesky knock ::).

That brings me to date, I enjoy the forum and the expertise of the contributors is evident.  Look for me to chime in when I have something to say and to ask advice when I need it.  I intend to end up with a 447 thumper, can't think of an engine (or even another car for street fun) that I'd rather have.  Sorry this is so wordy, guess that's just me.

Thanks for adding me.  I bought my first FE in May of 2012.  We looked for a year to find a 60's or 70's crew cab truck to use daily for hauling the kids and to tow our camper on weekends.  We found a 1970 F250 in Phoenix and brought it home, went over the brakes etc. and put it on the road.  I grew up around a few different 70's Ford trucks and have owned 5 of them by the time I started college.  I sold my 1979 to buy a Toyota for gas mileage while driving to college.  My wife and I have restored a 1955 Chevrolet 4 door sedan 12 years ago.  I drove it daily until we bought the crew cab.

I don't have much to offer in the way of help but I'm soaking up all you guys share on this great site.  Hopefully I can help someone along the way.

Hello everyone, I'm from the Hampton Roads area of tidewater VA.  A Canuck, born and schooled in in Nova Scotia, I've been fixated on cars since I was 8, when my dad brought home a brand-new 65 Impala SS 396 4-speed picked up directly off the Oshawa assembly line.

Come by my FE fascination honestly..when I was 14 my maternal grandfather taught me to drive in his 10-year old 61 TBird (390).  He loved that bullet Bird with a passion.  At 16, with a brand new drivers permit under my belt, my mother turned her rust-bucket 68 Meteor Montcalm 7-liter (think Canadian version of the Mercury Monterrey) over to me for the summer before she sold it.  Her theory was that money spent on gas wasn't spent on beer (and that sucker burned a lot of gas in the summer of '73, even at under a dollar a gallon there wasn't much left over for suds!).  The northern road salt sure killed the FOMOCOs of that era.

In the years before joining the navy in 1980 it was easy to pick up well-thrashed muscle cars for cheap.  I enjoyed  buying and selling (with one exception always at  a loss) a pretty eclectic mix, including a 69 Cougar CJ 428 4-speed that I picked up for $600, spent a winter slathering with bondo and paint, and sold for $1800 the following spring. Goodness I wish I had that one back to do properly today.

Spent 1980-1996 mostly at sea and focused on marriage, family etc.  Got back into the car hobby in 1996 with an 80 El Camino, modified for street/strip (bracket racing) duty -- I really wanted a 66-67 Ranchero but they were impossible to find on Canada's west coast at that time. Today the El Camino sits in a barn in Canada.

Came to Virginia in 2010 and bought the 67 Cyclone the following summer.  It was originally an H-code car, driven hard and put away wet near Petersburg VA.  In the last 2.5 years I've done the body and drive train, now with a mild 390 fitted with a Comp Extreme Energy 256, FPA tri-Ys,  a 4 barrel holley on a PI intake, and Pertonix HEI.  It's backed by a C6 and a 3:1 Traction-Loc 9-inch.  Intended use is as a highway cruiser transporting me to summertime nostalgia drag racing  and car show events.

I've found this site to be an invaluable resource -- thanks to all who've helped me with my questions and especially to Jay B for keeping the whole thing going. I really couldn't have progressed the Cyclone without it.  Of course, now I have serious 64 Galaxie big-block itch that's going to need scratching before I cross to the other side of the river!  My wife thanks you all for that.    ;)

Sorry for being so long-winded.  And looking forward to meeting some of you at Beaver Springs at the end of April.

Michael

Hello everyone!

Just introducing myself, as I'm brand new here, but have been on the FMF forum since around 2012. I'm in my late 50s (gulp that sounds weird to write) now, but in my 'last life' I was a Ford dealer parts manager from 1975-2000, (including a big move from PA to MN in there), then went 'rogue' and started selling f/t on eBay -which I still do. Like many of you, I've had many Fords going all the way back to the mid-70s, but then life intervenes, and, for a good while, I only had a daily driver. Finally in early 2011, wifey and I talked about getting a nice old car, and, after months of looking I wound up with the '64 Gal shown in my avatar. My innards were again at peace with the universe, lol.  ...and just as important, wifey likes the car too. ;)

In 2013 I found a local west metro cruising club called the 7-Hi Cruisers, and after our first full season with them, we have met and made many new friends, some of them even own a Ford, haha. Can't beat that I say!

I've got many proposed projects and upgrades I want to do so I'll be asking and/or lurking here as I go along. This forum looks like a great place to hang out ...I am looking forward to being a part of it! :)

Thanks for reading !

Norm

Hey Michael and Norm, great to read your intros, welcome aboard from a fellow lurker 8).  Michael, hope to see you in Beaver Springs. I have that itch scratcher out in my garage right now torn to pieces and I'm stuffing it with better pieces, I'll be a spectator this year.  Norm, can't hate your choice of Galaxies, we apparently share common interests :D.  As far as the late 50's go, I'm rollin' over to 58. Close?  The fun starts now.

Norm, nice to hear you're enjoying driving the car. Sounds like a nice club you found. As much as I love working on my cars, nothing beats just going for a drive on a nice day. Me and the wife will hop in one on a weekend day, on a whim, and just see how lost we can get. We have a lot of fun just cruising country roads and going places the "long" way.

Thanks much for the welcome and compliment Jay!!  Yes, I live in St Louis Park.

The club I belong to hangs out at 7-Hi corners (Hwy 7 and 101 in Minnetonka) on Tuesdays .....and pretty much every Thursday night at Minnetonka Drive-in in Spring Park/Mound. That one can get rather 'lively', but us 'elders' all play it cool why the youngin's go smoke 'em up, haha. I'll post some pics of last summer's action ...or at least a link to it.
Welcome aboard, Norm.  Great car.  Are you still in Minnesota?

Hiya Len ..and thanks for the welcome! I am weeks shy of my 57th, so then I'll be 57 + 1957, haha. I need to go find a 1957 Fairlane to celebrate- bwahaha. I agree about the fun - and your choice of Gals. ;)

Thanks again!     Norm

Haha!  Usually at the cruise meets I'm but one of two '64s there, so it's nice to be 'swarmy' someplace, lol. ;)

I agree about the drive ......we've gone a ways just to have a couple $1 cones at DQ, and when too many folks start ogling, we scurry back in the Gal, fire it up and off to another place, or a windy road (if one can find one of those here, haha).

The only problem with that lovely visual is; We need a 'heated town' here ...... like a heated garage only larger, lol. Jay knows what I mean ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome, and happy motoring!   Norm

That may be so, instead of circling the wagons we're circling the fastbacks.  Your Galaxie looks sweet, likin' those dog dishes 8).  I have given it careful consideration though and I appear to be exactly 1 Mustang down ::).  Better talk to the wife and investigate the potential for procurement..........

Great looking car Norm, looks clean and straight too :D  I think I'm gonna have to break down and go Photobucket or similar so I can put up pics of my own at some point, we need more '64 photos :).- Len

Thanks again Len :)   It is the photos, but thanks! ....because it's really a 15-20 footer, lol. But , as it is, I like it because I don't have to worry about every little thing, it's going to get nicks and road debris and it's the real deal, not a face-lifted, boob-job girl, teehee.

May I suggest Flickr.com for photo hosting. I notice on the Ford Muscle Forum alot of guys use Photobucket and the links they send often include the entire page and/or album when all they are trying to send is one photo. Flickr is nice that way, as seen in this photo below I copied & pasted directly below:

I just added the brackets and "img" so that the Flickr link is ''bbc coded" and will be visible here.

If you like, here's the link to all my Gal pic sets (it's a work in progress):

Great pics of your Gal, very nice looking car!

Yes, I like all those on mine too...and that it has some small front-end differences over other Gals I have looked, plus, I use my 'bombsight' to guide me down the road, teehee.  I would like to someday find an extra pair of fins, drill a small hole right behind the "sail" part and add small LED's, then wiring them into my turn signals (like '64-'66 T-Bird)  ......this is to cure my leaving the turn signal on at times, haha.

You're welcome Len :)   Look fwd to seeing your pics once you get a pic hosting site.

Also, congrats on your toploader find! I need to write up a 'help wanted' for my tired T-10, but will wait until I get a few posts, aka 'credibility' under my belt. It still works 'ok', but I would love to find someone local to "go through it".

I remember last fall a large group of us, in our cars, all caravaning to a private auto museum at a ranch northwest of the twin cities ....well anyways, one stretch of it put us on a very dusty dirt road -so I leaned over to wifey and smirked "gee, wonder how many fellow cruisers are cursing about now, their babies about to look like a day at the dirt track, lol".....

Have a great afternoon :)    Norm

I have a local guy that said he could build my late 70's 3 speed + overdrive, and I've addressed it before in this forum.  Guys here are kind enough to tell you it's good enough to survive (and it would be if you treat it right ;)) but I realized I'm just not that kind to my equipment.  Problem is, I just couldn't get there from here and could not ignore the nearly 1" of shiny yoke indicating that "my rules of engagement" were a tad short.  As far as the T10 goes, there are guys who can make it dance 8).  Me, I just wanted to be able to sidestep the clutch at a modest RPM level ::) and realized all I was missing was a reasonable link between the flywheel and the rear end.  The toploader will definitely cure my problem there.  Break it and it's my fault.

Sounds like a lot of fun Len (your finished car that is)! Will you have someone shoot a youtube video of that sidestep action for us to ogle over?  :P

Please (so that I don't sound 'preachy')....  Just be sure to swap out that rubber inlay 2 piece d/shaft for a sturdy one-piece one -if you haven't done so yet, now that you're going to be running such a stout motor and trans. I've seen what they look like when they give up the ghost after some mild 'umphing', lol.

On the video side if I can figure it out  ??? I'm hoping to post some of the eventual tuning session when I get to that point.  A shop local to me has a chassis dyno, we'll strap the thing down and tune it there.  He has a ('55 or '56) gasser T' bird, a "coyote stock" class built 70 Maverick, an 1,800 hp late model Mustang in the works and a patina soaked rat looking mid-50's pickup with a mod motor.  None of the cars are FE powered but the blue oval is well represented.

Once I'm sure everything's right I plan on making some noise :D.  Lots to do between now and then..........

Happy noise making to ya  :P      Norm

Hi all, a little over 4 1/2 years ago I decided I wanted something a little classier after owning my 1970 Galaxie for 20 years, so I bought my 1963 1/2 Galaxie 500 Fastback powered by a 427 R code engine and 4 speed Top  Loader.  The car was originally 390 powered.

The car needed a fair bit of work doing to it over the 4 years years, but the main hurdle had been the engine, which the problems have now been corrected.

I hope you don't mind me posting a fair few photos.

Cheers Dan.

Hi, follow fe owners, newbie here, but not new fe owner, probably like a lot of members here I grew up driving fe powered cars back in the 60s, 390s and 427s ...back than I had no idea what a 427s history would become,or evolve into. I bought my 427 from a friend's older brother from a 67 fairlane, it was a storker, with 428 crank and rods. Had Jans domed pistons, single 4 barrel carb with a aluminum intake,I later traded that single 4 barrel setup for a 6 pack, man that really woke that 427 up.I could go on and on but as you can tell that ole Galaxie made a big impression on me, of all the cars that I've owned that's the one that I'll never forget, even at the age of 62, I can remember it like it was yesterday.thanks for reading my newbie post, Jackie

New member here from Snowflake, AZ. Thanks for the membership! I am an old FE guy that is trying to learn new tricks so I have read all the high output posts on all 58 pages :) I am a good mechanic but not a hotrod mechanic so I will have some questions for more power. Currently sled pulling a 1975 F-250 4x4 with 440/428, built with a complete RPM package, all box stock so I might need more power soon, lol

Welcome to the forum. We'd love to see a photo of your truck. I have some friends that ran a Cammer powered Ford pulling truck 35 years ago, was always a fun sport to watch. I was also through Snowflake, Az. about 16 years ago on the way back to Minnesota after visiting friends in Phoenix. We had to make a stop in Show Low, Az., hence the reason for being off the interstate. Very beautiful part of the country. Good luck. Kevin

Snowflake, Arizona...talk about an oxymoron ;D
Welcome, Nick. Nothing like sled pulling to test an engine build. At full throttle/full load, it's like a dyno pull that lasts for 20 seconds. That'll find any weak links in the system...lol

Kevin & Doug, thank you for the welcome. You guys have some nice equipment. Here is a pic and video if I can do this right. Both are of the same pull, turn your speakers up and listen to the 47 year old FE sing :) 16 mph and 5800 RPM, I would like to get that up to about 18 and 6200, the 385 series are tough to beat. Humm, I guess the file is too big and not sure how to down size. If you want, go to U-tube and type in Tremonton Truck Pull under Nick Isaacs, sorry :(

Hi Heiko,

I love the action picture and video, but being a fellow '63 Galaxie owner, I'm a bit biased.

And also welcome to Jay's forum.

Welcome Heiko
That is just too bad man. :P
That is a dream bucket list item for sure.
Looks to be some healthy springs and bars under it also. Cal Tracs?
Run down those worthless peasants. LOL

Yes there are a few things that i have changed:

Lower A-Arm Offset Shaft Eliminator Kit
1" front Swaybar
7/8" rear Swaybar
Bilstein Shocks from Race Car Dynamics
Cal Tracs
shortend 70th Lincoln Coil Springs in the front and four Power Disc Brakes
15" Steel Wheels

Here is one more from the Nürburgring, where you can see well that the tires have to work hard  ;)

Heiko,
Where did you get those sway bars?  I tried to buy a bigger front bar for my Gal from Summit but it didn't even come close to fitting...

Btw your car looks great at the famous Nurburgring!

Thanks,
Bruce

Heiko,
Nice driving and thanks for the ride at the track. That has got to be a good feeling to pass the other cars with your Galaxie.  :o
Title: Re: New Members - Introduce Yourselves Here!
Post by: mechanik5243 on January 06, 2015, 02:47:46 AM
Yes it was a realy good feeling to get some, but there are a lot of faster cars on the Track which are for racing only...
But for this year, the cards are reshuffled!

Was fun at all and there faces when thay want to overtake in the corners and the Galaxie still holds his Line is priceless  ;D

The Swaybars are from Quickor Garage, currently they have there kit on ebay for 295$ (very nice price) and i would recommand to install front and rear swaybar!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/59-60-61-62-63-64-Galaxie-1-Front-and-7-8-Rear-Sway-Bar-new-/261724213078?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3ceffa8f56&vxp=mtr (http://www.ebay.com/itm/59-60-61-62-63-64-Galaxie-1-Front-and-7-8-Rear-Sway-Bar-new-/261724213078?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3ceffa8f56&vxp=mtr)

You have to know that you musst disassembly one side of your front A-Arms to install the swaybar, and i assume that the 1" fromt swaybar comes in touch with the lower A-Arm without the lower A-Arm Offset Shaft Eliminator Kit.

Thanks for the link Heiko!  I have the offset shaft eliminator kit already installed on my '63 Sportroof so hopefully the Quickor front sway bar will fit this time.

Hi all,
Just joined,  from Australia and will probably drive you all mad with questions.
Just want to say how impressed I am with the advice I've received from people already and the quality of that advice.
To read a book about these motors and then have the author giving you the "good oil" about building one gives merit and confidence the advice is solid.

Hello everyone, My name is Jared and I thouht I would finally join the forum since I read  it everyday. I am from northern Illinois. I have been into FEs for a few years and have one of my own. It's a 390 that currently resides in my 66 Fairlane GT. It is originally a Nightmist Blue GT 390 4 speed car. I have been involved with FEs since my dad has owned and raced them since he was a kid. I enjoy reading this forum very much.

Thanks, Jay. It'll be a slow ramp-up over the next few months as I got detoured by a couple of events. The local machine shop has freshened its Storm-Vulcan and other goodies, and is now awaiting delivery of a two-motor Winona hone. It's about 2 1/2 miles away, so I do the Snoopy dance with fingers crossed (yes, I can multi-task). 390 on the front burner, 428 and 460 on the side burners.

Hah!

Online? Tres boring. Due to the medical risk of shay-shaying about with untied shoes, I hired a qualified nurse to tutor me. Long legs. Short skirt. Man, I just could not get it right. Had to bend down time and time again to practice. Took weeks. Now I just need a masseuse to work on my sore neck.

Just imagine how I felt reading the Registration Agreement. "You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, adult material, or otherwise in violation of any International or United States Federal law."

I'm sitting here thinking, "Sxxt, that's my whole act. How am I going to convey the warm and fuzzies that exemplifies the FElony persona if I can't curse like an inmate and post pictures of some tanned, cuddly bunsies? I'm toast." How long before I have to report my own posts to the moderator? I dunno. Soon, probably.

Shy? Afraid? You talkin' to the guy with 15,000 posts in the FE/385 group that I started in 1998? The guy with a train-wreck fan base on four continents up until 2005? The guy who claims he "forgot" to put on his pants before going to the titty bar, 7 times in a row? Shy? Afraid? OK, here's my first question for the group: Guys, what is the best technique for fastening a geriatric butt nugget like Randy to my driveshaft and taking him for a little spin down the interstate? Money is no object!!

Apologies to the moderator if butt nugget is actually one word. I don't get out much these days.

I have followed this forum for quite a while but did not register as a member until a few weeks ago.  I am familiar with a lot of the members from posts on the FE Forum where I have been following since 2001.  I bought a stock '64 Galaxie in 1999 and have completely re built and modified the car to a NSS race only car.  Best e.t. is 11.33 with the current motor; 427 stock marine block with a Scat 4.25 crank for 486 cu. in., pocket ported Edelbrock heads, 2, 600 c.f.m. Holleys on a Dove tunnel wedge.

Since I retired in 2014 I have had more time to spend on the car and last year I checked off an item on my bucket list when I towed to Beaver Springs for the FE Race and Reunion.  I got to meet many of you in person an had a fantastic time.  I am rebuilding the front suspension this winter and be back at Beaver Springs in April.  I am looking forward to seeing some of you there again.

Bill, welcome to the forum and to the ranks of the newly retired!   Great looking Galaxie too.  I've got a 63 fastback / 352 that will get an FE build in the new year.  I've also got a 427 Marine (LH rotation) block as a candidate foundation for my new build.  Looking forward to hearing more about the car and details on your "410 HP" FE.

Mine started as a stock 352 also.  The first motor was also a 427 marine center oiler with a stock 428 crank.  Blew that motor in 2009 with a cracked cylinder wall.  It was not block filled.  The motor now has the blocked filled to the bottom water pump holes.  I have not water temperature issues with it.  If you are going racing with your car I would recommend block fill.

Thanks for the ad! I have been lurking on this forum for some time. I currently don't own an FE but do work on them once in awhile. I have a 64 Fairlane with a SBF (and yes, it should have a FE in it....) Time and money prevent that from happening anytime soon. Always looking and keeping up to date for what's new in the FE world.

Hello all,

Troy Trzpuc Southern Iowa.

History in Diesel and commercial AG, I now work as a technical adviser for a small manufacturing facility and moon lite as a mechanic.

Have been on the FE forum for 15yrs? Only one FE and one FT running at the moment, been a fan of the FE since my first mud truck (points champion). Have built been around just about every Ford engine but never seem to shake my appreciation for the FE.

I'm a young guy by comparison and love hearing the old "war stories".

Its exciting with all the new developments as of late which means I can play with these engines for years to come. And I look forward to my next engine build.

Regards,

Troy T

Mine's been apart a bunch of times, not a survivor like yous, but my grandfather bought new in 71, I inherited in 1984, only two owner, and always had the same last name on the title.

I say a 445 finished to look like a 352 would be a fun effort!

I'm a new member who appears here as Vintageironlover. My name is Scott and I have been a fan of the FE since I was about 10 years old, or since about 1960. I don't currently have a hobby or project car but I'm constantly reading about all this stuff. I found my way to this site after following the last couple of Drag Weeks in Hot Rod Magazine. Growing up in the middle of the golden age of drag racing and the muscle car era was, and still is, a dream. I probably would have started out with an FE-powered car but at that time, in my home town area, there weren't any really good Ford performance guys to get involved with. As it turned out, my first fast car was not a Ford but an 1969 Oldsmobile F-85 with the W-31 package. I learned to drag race with this car and was doing fairly well on our local scene - until I was drafted. I had a couple of Corvettes after Vietnam but also had a family by then, so the toy cars faded from the scene. I served in the Army for 20 years, then got a college degree and worked another 20 years as a Department of the Army Civilian. I retired at the end of 2015, so I may finally end up with an FE hobby car after all. Meanwhile, I really enjoy reading all the posts here and getting educated. You'll probably see questions from me from time to time as I continue my quest. Thanks for letting me join!

For some reason, I thought I'd done an intro on here, but it looks like I never did, and I have already been here about a year! I have played with modified cars literally all my life, did some heads-up 10 wide street car stuff in the late nineties-2003. I am 56 yrs old, not really a Ford guy, or a chevy guy, or a Mopar guy, or anything else, I just like cars. I have three falcons, two '65s and a '67, a 289/t-10 steel ford T-bucket project, I have two other T projects, one full-fendered with a 270hp 283 clone, the other with a desoto hemi, and a '39 Ford convertible that I am putting a 324 Olds and cad-lasalle trans in. I have a 428FE that will be going in one of the ''65 Falcons, the other is getting a 331 and toploader and theres a '71 4v 351C core under my deck, not sure what I am going to do with that yet.
I also have a '66 Chevy II wagon with a 327/200R4 and 4.11s, and a daily driver/shop truck/beater S-10 with a 355 and 700r4 that runs 12.0s, but is getting a bit of a makeover right now, AFR 195's and a cam/intake change. I also have a '66 satellite with a 440, so I have a dog from every town. Well I guess I need an AMC. :D I also have a '73 Ducati 750 GT. I just basically love cars.

Greetings,

I am your newest member, my name is Evan and I've been a fan of the Ford FE since I found that the FE powered some of the coolest fords ever like Thunderbolts and Nascar Galaxies in addition to the immortal Shelby Cobras and Ed Pink's overhead cam fuelie engines. I think that the the FE is the coolest engine ever produced by the Big Three, except for maybe ancient straight-eights or flatheads...

So, some years back while cruising my local Craigslist I found what I was looking for, a sun-bleached, only lightly molested chunk of american iron. I am the proud owner of a 66 thunderbird project car. This particular 'bird spent its whole life in either Mexico or Arizona, had only two rusty spots in the floor boards that were about as big around as a pencil, and came to me complete with the numbers-matching 428 FE. As I type this, the car is currently stripped down to a bare shell, the engine block and crank have been machined and confirmed to be stout pieces, and I need to find a place that will dip or blast the body so I can primer and start doing some engineering on the chassis. The car is a unibody, so it's not as easy as it might be otherwise, but my objective is to build a reasonably stout resto-mod with the FE and an automatic trans. Other planned mods are a six point roll cage, some floor stiffening, and a mod to the steering so if I ever have a prang I have a real seat belt thanks to the cage and the steering wheel doesn't uppercut me and knock my head off.

I am a little nervous about using the stock engine block, though. That block keeps getting more and more scarce. I have seen blocks on Ebay in much worse shape than this one and on their last overbore with an asking price 3X what I paid for this whole car and as I plan on this car being fun and maybe even seeing some nitrous oxide at some point it would be unfortunate to split the numbers-matching block in half. I am on this forum to learn what it takes to make this engine run well and live a long time. Maybe some of you can help me in this endeavor, and help me go fast, when the time comes to build my engine.

Thanks.

Hello everyone! First time forum lurker long time poster ;D. My name is Brian and I'm from southern indiana. I grew up learning FE stuff from my old man. He Bracket raced a 428cj in division 3.  I still have my first car, 1964 T-Bird that I've had for nearly 16 years.  It currently has a mild 410 and c6.  The original 390/ cruisomatic is tucked away for a day I might get old enough to do an original restoration on the car :o. I've had several non fe related projects including turbocharged small block efi stuff and sport bikes of mine and close friends.  Future goals when life let's me is to do a full HRM power tour and try my hand at Drag Week with FE power. I am here to learn and hopefully add to the positive dialogue here on the forum and mabey someday get to meet some of you. Thanks for adding me!!!!!

New guy, Dan here. Just found this site and it looks pretty good. Lived & worked in Detroit area all my life until a few years ago when I moved to Arizona. Got tried of the snow & cold. Worked 40+yrs as Ford dealer mechanic and "cut my teeth" on yblock and FE engines. Although I've worked on these engines all those years and know them inside & out,I'm always amazed at the knowledge some of the people have on both engines and cars. Never had the time to study them the way some guys have because things would change so quickly. Ya had to keep up. Started out fixing cars with points, carbs and generators and ended up fixing computer controlled ignition, fuel injection and cars with multiple computers to make things go. Currently have 2 cars I'm playing with. One a 57 Ford w/292, 3x2's & a 5sp. Just "rescued" a 61 Starliner I'm trying to return to a more stock condition. Supposed to have a 406 in it, 3x2's & a toploader 4sp. More on the 406 later. Would like some opinions on it. Anyway, don't know how much help I can add but I'll chime in when I can.

Hey all, new member Joel here.  Residing in Minnesota, I've know Jay for several years.  He's helped me out on more than one occasion.  My forum name, tall69, is derived from my first collector car.  A presidential blue '69 Ford Talladega.  I was late to the muscle car game, not acquiring my first until my early 30's.  I cosmetically and mechanically restored it.  Including a repaint and stock rebuild of the original 428CJ.   I was more into the drag racing lineage of muscle cars.  The Talladega was, no doubt, an important part of stock car racing's history.  The 375 dyno'd horsepower, column shift automatic car had me longing for more.

My opportunity came a few years later in the form of a 1970 Torino Cobra.  Big block, check, drag pack, check, 4 speed, check, impact color, check, high back buckets, check.  Oh, by the way, it's one of 207 Torino Cobra's with a 4.30 Detroit Locker rear end.  This was no beauty queen.  It ran and drove, but it had been run hard and put away wet.  Although the odometer only reads 15k, it was a really rough 15k.  It was missing most of the underhood goodies.  The rest of the drivetrain was intact.  That gave me liberties to build what I wanted.  I wanted loud, aggressive, brash.  I'd say I hit all of my goals.   :D

Welcome to the forum  I looked on a 70 Torino Cobra Jet about 15-20 years

The asking price was .....about what you have to pay for the shaker hood today :o :-[

Hello all, long time lurker, first time member. Definitely a great site!
The knowledge and helpfulness is indeed huge. My lady and I have always had old American steel for our daily drivers and work trucks and with sites like this I've been moving from nickle and dime repairs into full on restomods in my free time. It helps with kids college paid for.. The Stock 390/C6 coming out of a repower on my pickup will be my first stab at a gas engine and tranny rebuild. With what I've already picked from here, it doesn't look like a daunting task at all. A new addict is born every day...

Sorry for taking so long to notice this. Already started posting without thinking.

I'm from Iowa, and am descended from a long line of FE guys.

Both my Grandfather and Father drove nothing but FEs from 1958 until the late '70s. I inherited most of their worn out cars.

Now, I'm getting back into FEs. Am currently deployed to Afghanistan, and for the next 10 months or so, all I can do is plan and buy parts for my Hurricane Roadster project, which will be FE powered, of course.

My wife and I just moved back from Germany, so my only other car I own that runs is a 67 Mustang convertible. So since I'm in need of a shop truck, I am also looking for an older FE powered F-series.

Greetings. My name is Scott Foxwell. I guess I should have done this a while back and out of respect for proper protocol I figured I should anyway. Originally born and raised in southern CA, I currently work for Straub Technologies in N/E TN. Some of you may know the name Chris Straub. Some of you may know me from other venues and websites. I'm 58 yrs old, born 9/8/58. I served my country in my peace time endeavor in the Army as crewchief on Blackhawk helicopters.  I've been doing this engine thing a long time now. My first car was a 69 Ranchero with a factory 428cj/c6. Bought it from my dad and it was the car I learned to drive in, and the first engine I ever helped dad rebuild. I've had a lot of really good opportunities in my "career" to work for some of the very best in the business. I worked for Rich Maskin in the early days of Dart when he was just getting back into Pro Stock. I worked for Alan and Blaine Johnson in CA when they first went to TF. I knew Blaine well and saw him almost on a daily basis. I'll always miss him. I was primarily involved in cylinder head development/manufacture/repair for both companies. I had the chance to work with Rich "on the side" in his Pro Stock engine program when he first took on Mark Powuk as a customer. I've been involved in a number of land speed projects, the two most noteworthy are John Raines' 300 mph Firebird and Seth Hammond's Lakester. I did more fabrication/machine work on both those cars than engine work. I did assemble the first turbo V6 for John's car which we dyno'd at Ken Duttweiler's and made over 1K hp. Both John and Seth are multi world record holders. Seth Hammond is a well known icon at Bonneville and is responsible for putting more people in the 200 and 300 mph clubs than anyone I know. I'm proud to be a very integral part in both of those programs. I was also pretty heavily in boat drags and had my own jet drag boat for a while, but ultimately sold it to buy some of my own first cylinder head equipment. I have since focused on induction development and that is what my primary role is at Straub Tech. I do build the occasional engine...maybe 5 or 6 a year, and most are custom "by appointment only" type engines. What has brought me here is my new venture; a 1967 Fairlane GTA. I'll be doing a few iterations of my motor "ideas" with this car, ultimately hoping to have a 1071 sitting on a nice top end with a BBM foundation underneath. I will apologise ahead of time for the way I am sometimes. I'm not a loyalist, and consider myself a non-denominational engine builder. I respect the passion and devotion others have to a brand, I just don't share it. I'm passionate about performance. I'm passionate about understanding and learning. I'm passionate about doing things as best my ability and knowledge will allow. I am OCD to the letter. I am a perfectionist, and this sometimes doesn't come across very well "socially" so if I offend, please know in advance it's nothing personal...till someone makes it personal. I'm here to learn, and I'm here to share everything I know and have in order to help others. I'm an open book and always willing to take calls and answer questions. My work number at Straub is 423 391 7774.
Have a great day!

Scott, welcome to the forum.  A 69 Ranchero with the 428CJ is a great vehicle; I had a 71 Ranchero with the 429SCJ package and had a blast with it in the early 1980s.  Sure wish I still had that one, even though it wasn't an FE car...

The Ranchero was a super sleeper. Dad knew a thing or two about FE's. He had a 55 TBird with a Ford Racing 406 that was bumped to 460ci. In the very early 60's that thing ran 10's with street tires and a truck 3spd... using 2nd and 3rd. Had a custom Jack Engle (friend of Dad's) cam and he was supposed to go to Bonneville with the car but that never happened. The Ranchero he bought when I was a Jr in high school (for 1500.00) and we rebuilt it my senior year. It was that Ivy yellow with a black vinyl top, black bench seat interior, manual steering, C6 with a shift kit, stock 14" GT wheels and a functioning hood scoop. It got balanced, freshened, little head work and an Isky cam and valve train. It had a 3.89 rear, big factory 2-1/2" exhaust and G60 Dunlop GT Qualifiers on the back that got surprisingly sticky when you heated them up. I cruised Van Nuys Blvd on Thursday nights in the late 70's and won more races with that car than anyone would ever imagine... and I was only 17.

Craig, in Phoenix.  Pretty new to automotive side of mechanics.  Did Harley’s during my service in the Marines and after till about ‘08.  Had a nice ‘78 F100 with a 302 in it when I was young.  Fast forward to few years ago I sold all my bikes and picked up a ‘48 Fleetline. And after that a ‘58 Mercury Monterey.  Right now tearing out the original MEL 383 and Merc-o-matic  and putting in a 390/ c6.   Found the board while hunting for valve covers and boom here I am.

Hey everyone.  Been lurking here for a few months but thought I should say hi.  Picked up this '64 Monterey back in March.  Super solid Texas car.  390 with an Edelbrock 1406 and the CruiseOMatic.  I will admit it took some time to get used to manual drums and manual steering.  Ha!  Any kind of change in direction or change in speed requires you to mean it!  LOL!

Anyway, I've learned a ton from this site so far.  Tons of good info.  I'm looking forward to learning more!

Also, that Pepboys steering wheel went straight to the trash heap as soon as I got the car home  :)

Hi fellas. I’m Gavin Houghton from Lowell MI. I’m 43yrs old and I’ve been into FE’s since my teens.
Here in MI we have sand dunes to play in so all of my stuff has been sand race stuff. Very similar to
mud racing.
My first was a dual four 410 in a 1970 highboy, which was quickly replaced by a 427 tunnel port.
It ran extremely well despite the weird heavy truck, big port combo. Felt like a 2 stroke when the ports started to work lol.
Then I pulled the tunnel port out and put it in a 62 unibody. It was my first time experimenting with a 2wd. Never had a chance to sort that combo out, then life got in the way for a long time.
My current toy is a 482 in a 1981 bronco. I’ll see about getting some pics and specs in the members projects section. I’m really excited about Jays new heads as I’d like to upgrade soon. Assuming he’ll sell them to a nobody lol.
It’s great to be here with so many knowledgeable FE guys. I think I’ll really enjoy it, and maybe even have something to contribute

I actually registered for this forum in 2012 but have only posted 11 times.  I am a creature of habit and long time member of the Network 54 forum (since 2001) so I have usually just monitored and posted there.  I know a lot of people are active on on both forums and recognize your names. The technical issues on this forum seem a little more  sophisticated than the Network 54 forum so I apologize in advance for any "dumb" questions I might post here.  The Network 54 Forum internet connectivity issues have become too much of a  hassle for me.  Also, bluntly, some of the "food fights" on the Network 54 over  the years have  become tiresome.

Hi everyone, glad to be apart of this forum! I have been lurking for about a year and have learned a ton by being here. Earn my living as a auto tech at a family owned garage for the last 42 years. When I started cars had points, now they are computers that happen to have an engine. Three years ago I finally bought the 64 Galaxie I have been wanting since I was a kid. Got it with 39k miles, a 352, backed up with a cruise o matic. Starting my 428, C6 build for it, so I am sure I have some questions. In the stable is a 70 Boss 302 and a 66 GTO ragtop.

Thanks Joe Menard

Hello,  My name is Adam.  Some of you have seen me on the HAMB, MEL, and other forums.  I have been stalking Jay's FE forum for quite awhile, so figured it was time to actually join.

I have a 352 powered '62 Mercury Monterey Custom Wagon and a 390 powered '76 F-250 extended cab.   I also have a '51 F-1 street rod with a 351W and 5 speed, a '63 Fairlane 2 door post project, a '60 Ford C600 Chassis Cab with a Lincoln Y-Block, and an '85 F350 quad cab dually with a 6.9 IDI.  So that covers nearly the complete range of Ford products.  At the end of the day, the FE is my favorite, although the MEL is growing on me.

I am currently working on building a 6-71 blown '58 430 MEL to dump into the '51 so the Windsor can get used in the Fairlane.

Hey guys, I joined a few months ago but never actually introduced myself.  My name is Chris and I hail from the PNW.  The only FE powered vehicle I own is a 63 Galaxie boxtop which I just picked up a few months back from the 2nd owner.  It's almost completely original but will soon have some of Blair Patrick's 520ci goodness under the hood.

I've always been a Ford guy but never really owned anything other than fox body mustangs or later model Cobras.  This seems like a great place to hang out and I'm learning a lot from you guys.

Nice Boxtop!  Looks just right.  I've also got a BP 482 I'm in the process of putting in my 63 Fastback.  What are your plans for the tranny?

Thanks, Bruce.  I'm thinking a Dynamic C6 is what I'll go with, but I have some time yet to decide.

I'm running late with the introduction, but I can already see what a helpful group this is. Shannon from Alabama here, where a "full eighth" is a long track.

I'm finally getting around to my long-neglected first Ford, a '68 Torino GT convertible. I've always considered it a boring late-model, so earlier Fairlanes and Galaxies got all the attention.
It's currently down to the shell and ready for some floor pan work and soul searching about rear tire size. Ford solved the problem of clearance for stowing the convertible top by literally (and unceremoniously) crushing the original tubs, leaving a wrinkled mess with padding glued on top.

Hello all, I'm Keith.
I'm new here but not to vehicles. I have had my 1967 Shelby since I was in high school. I recently finished the restoration. Some of the others from the FE Forum suggested joining here, as it was more proactive to addressing questions and being kept abreast of product availability and tricks for our beleaguered FE.

Much of the work on my engines was done by Reath Automotive in Long Beach/Signal Hill, Ca. I have been based out of DFW for some time. I miss the car culture and the weather of So Ca, but not the rest of the mess there.

With that said, here are a few pictures of said vehicle.

Hello,

My name is Zach. I'm from South Carolina. I'm 35 and very inexperienced. I've had a decent number of "old" cars but have not built one.

My project is a 1964 Galaxie rust bucket. It's a good 50 footer.

Just got the block back from the machine shop. Short block assembled thus far. Survival Stroker kit. Edelbrock stage II heads from Keith Craft to arrive later this week hopefully. I've learned a lot from the site thus far.

I've rebuilt the rear end. 3.70 gears. Changed springs to +1/stiff. Wish I would have went +2. Now working on the engine bay for the car itself.

Greetings!    I am Brady, I fell in love with F.E.'s when I was a kid.  My dad raced a 64 fairlane in the 70's.  I currently am building a 428 stroker for my 67 Fairlane. This forum will be a great addition to the tool box.  Much wisdom seems present here.

I'm not introducing my member!  :D
I should need no introduction. My name proceeds me! It's my handle.  I am a long time Mustang/Shelby guy who has been bitten by the expensive element known as FE.  More of a dinosaur that became all but extinct but now has been revived by the aftermarket finally getting on the ball.

My name is Randy, I’ve posted a few times and thought I should introduce myself. I’m new to the fe world but not hot rods. I’ve had a lifelong love affair with anything with an engine! It started with my first car ‘68 Camaro I bought in 1970. I modified almost everything on that car until it was one of the fastest in my little town. At least my second car was a Ford! ‘71 Mach 1, 351 4v. Since then I’ve had and modified muscle cars, drag cars, dirt cars, mud trucks, sports cars, road race car, and offshore boats. If you’d like to see my latest build google Bionic Bronco. Back to fe’s although I’ve had a couple Ford pick ups with 352 and 390 I didn’t know much about them. I’ve always wanted a ‘66 Fairlane and bought one at Mecum last year. So now I’m here to learn about Ford fe! Oh yeah, Brent is building me a side Oiler tunnel port, somewhere around 600 + hp, so I guess I’ll have to change out most all the drive train on the Fairlane! I need plenty of advice.
Thanks Randy

Not sure if anyone is still looking at this thread as it appears the last post was 2011. Anyway, I’m new here and new to FE’s but not to Ford Motors, just more familiar with small blocks, 5 liters and a 4.6 at one point. So I’ve been surfing this site off and on for a while looking to learn more about the FE. I’ve got a ‘67 Mustang Coupe that was a factory S Code / Toploader and plan to put it back in that configuration soon. I do have a 390 I picked up a few years ago from a 67 Galaxie 500 that has the 8 bolt C7AE A heads and 2V intake. My want is to get some good reliable power out of it without remortgaging the house to do it

Sounds like a fun project. You’ll find some great ideas here, it’s pretty incredible what gets shared, and the willingness of the vendors to help.  To me it would be easy for an f.e. Rookie to fail miserably and be disappointed with a shelf built engine.  I would encourage you to look at a custom ground camshaft, regardless of your horsepower goal.

Zach, what part of South Carolina are you in? I'm currently in Clover which is on the west side of Lake Wylie not far from the NC state line near Gastonia. Anyway I'd like to get some info on the 447 you are building to see if it's a configuration that would work for my needs as well.

Thanks,
Jody (SKEETER65)

Well it looks like its time to update this thread...

I am a 45+ year master auto mechanic (from back before the industry started calling them "technicians")
About half and half dealer and independent, factory training and certification on multiple brands. I seem to have specialized in drivability/performance diagnostic stuff combined with electrical/electronic fault tracing. These days I try to just stick to inspecting and prepping used cars, but the problems and headaches still seem to often find me.

My background includes multiple streetrod/hotrod and drag racing facets, and I have always been the guy who tried to absorb every bit of technical info on performance and power for more than 50 years.
Though I have owned several vehicles (to say the least), my biggest tie to the FE specifically would be my '67 Mustang Fastback GTA that I have owned since 1977. I will spare you all the details, but suffice it to say every bit of the car has been apart and back together and built in multiple past iterations. The last being a bit of a retro "street and strip" style built modeled on what I would call an "early '70's period/style.
I drove and raced it a bit up until about 2000, then as often happens, shoved it in a shed under cover and... Life happens.

It has become time to get back to it. Dragging it out and pulling off the cover I find it looks like a "barn find" that honestly- needs a lot of work justto get back to where I left off.

Thus the reason I am here.
(I was a frequent member of the "old" FE forum, but there little reason anyone would recall me from there)
So on to some questions and discussion!
