Title: Four Drag Week Winners
Post by: jayb on September 28, 2015, 08:53:30 AM
Got a pretty good picture over the weekend of my four Drag Week winning cars; sent a copy in to Hot Rod for potential publication.  I think I may be the only person who has won their class at Drag Week with four different cars, although I'm not 100% sure about that.

I thought I'd post a picture to "scoop" Hot Rod in case they do publish it; FE Power forum members saw it first  ;D

I think you should get started on a 5th vehicle just to be sure lol.

That's a great picture, it would make a nice poster!

And Congrats again on the accomplishment.

Cool pic! I don't really didn't follow the past events closely but I'd bet you're correct.

Oooooohhh, thats so nice.  :) Certainly something to be proud of. I think a couple guys have done it with 2 different cars, but 4!, I think your in a league of your own. They should do an article.

Nothing like a smart-aleck Drunk Monkey!  You certainly enjoyed a few of the "estate's" adult beverages at the photo shoot yesterday  ;D

I ran the GT in bone stock condition at Drag Week 2006, in the Daily Driver class, shortly after I purchased it at the end of 2005.  At Drag Week I had to slip the clutch to get it to launch, and by the end of the event the clutch was pretty much burned up.  After I got back home I put in a Spec clutch and the factory Ford Motorsports headers (by Borla), feeding into the stock muffler.  I also put a different tune in the ECU.  I'm guessing its just over 600 HP now, and still has the original drivetrain.

You can read my blog about DW 2006 at the link below:

What, no DragWeek sticker on the GT?  :) Great group of Fords. Nice pic!

Yeah, that kind of sucks, doesn't it?  The GT's windshield is so curved that the banner sticker draped down into the middle of the windshield on either end, so I never put the sticker on, not even at the event.  I put it up on my shop wall instead.  It would have been cool to have it on there, since the car won its class...

Dang Jay that is just awesome. You might be correct cause I can't think of anyone else with four cars in the winters circle. If Scott would have chosen super street this year he would have had Ist place in that class. I think all he needed to do was add a piece of fiberglass somewhere. Again that is a great accomplishment with those four cars. I think Hot Rod should do an article on it.

Thanks Jack, if it was four Chevys I'm sure they'd do an article ;D  It was great to see you, Scott, and Eugene at the race this year, and that Cougar is just smokin'!  I still can't believe Scott ran a 1.29 60' with that car.  Its too bad that Curt Johnson came back and ran that Fox body car in your class; he had a new car to run in Pro Street this year but I was told he blew the engine earlier in the summer, so he had to come back with the black Mustang.  If it wasn't for him, Scott would have run away with the win.

I sure hope you make it back next year, and have better luck with the Mustang.  By the way, if I make any progress with that "secret project" that we talked about at Drag Week, I'll be sure to let you know - Jay

I notice the only manual transmission car is sitting in front. I wonder what Freud would have to say about that? ;D

Cool shot. And even cooler having 4 DW wins in 4 classes, in 4 different cars. But what's coolest of all is you have 3 badass FE cars that can ALL be driven on the street. I'm curious, do you ever just get one out and drive it around for a while, to work, to the ice cream stand or even to the local 5 & Dime? I certainly would.

Ya I'd like to know how they drive on the street too. Which car is your favorite? And how do the SOHC's compare to the wedge in the 69?

Jay, I'm pretty sure you are the only one to win in four different classes with four different cars. It better be worth a shot in the magazine. When I was spectating at Gateway I heard Lohnes announce that Kurt Johnson had five wins? I thought it was three in a row, in SR BB/NA, still impressive, but not your feat.

You do have to watch out for those darn black Fox body cars. We'll see how mine does at Drag Weekend.

Congratulations again, and a big well done to Scott and the Cougar. It was impressive!

That's a nice picture. And only the Professor of FEology could pull it off. 4 wins, but if I remember correctly, the Galaxie and the Shelby both ran Modified BBNA right? And they both used the same motor, so it doesn't count. :P ;)
Title: Re: Four Drag Week Winners
Post by: jayb on September 29, 2015, 08:43:35 PM
That's actually correct, I won in 2009 and this year in Modified NA.  The rules changed over the years, but it was the same class, so four cars, three classes.

On the engine, the Galaxie engine and the Shelby clone engine used the same block and crank.  But, pistons, sleeves, heads, headers, induction, cams, and EFI systems are all different between the cars, so I don't think you can say that the engines are the same.

Doug, last weekend I took the Shelby clone back out and drove it to a friend of mine's daughter's wedding.  I'm afraid I stole some attention from the bride  ;D ;D ;D  I do get the current car out pretty regularly, if only to go pick up a pizza for the family on Sunday night, but I don't insure all of them, so they will sit for a year or two at a time, sometimes.  The Galaxie hasn't been insured since 2012, and the Mach 1 since 2013.  This year I have the Shelby clone and the GT insured, so I've been driving the GT some this summer, and the Shelby clone since I got it running at the end of August.  I plan to keep both those cars insured until the end of October, and be driving them until then.  One thing about Drag Week is that after spending 1000 miles in the car, you figure out what you'd like to change.  For example, the instrument panel in the Shelby clone is a custom piece, and the turn signal and high beam indicators are in a bad place, hidden behind the steering wheel when I'm in the normal driving position.  I'm going to pull that panel and drill some different holes for the indicators, so I can actually see them when I'm driving the car.  Just one example of about 15 minor items that I want to get fixed before I put the car away for the winter...

I think that Curt Johnson has won five times, once in 2007 with his white Chevelle in BB/PA (he beat my Mach 1 that year), one year in Pro Street NA, and three years in BB/NA Street Race.

Bill, I'm really looking forward to seeing how your Fox car runs; that should be very exciting.  Good luck at Drag Weekend!

They all drive just fine on the street, but I've been accused of driving them like a grandma ::)  I don't see the point of spinning the tires and raising hell on the street, and with all that power on street tires, you can't put the power to the pavement anyway.  So I just cruise around in them when I drive them, and enjoy the experience.

I have to say that the Mach 1 is my favorite, although the Galaxie is a close second.  The Mach 1 is super comfortable and has a nearly stock interior, which brings me back to my younger days.  And I really like the way the Mach 1 looks.  But I really like them all, and I get a kick out of driving any of them.

That's great to hear that you drive them, even if only a couple at a time. I drive mine every chance I get, usually at least twice a week unless I'm just to busy, but often I'll drop everything just to go for a short drive. On nice days I'll drive it to work and park across the street in a deserted parking lot. But I have to be alert being surrounded at work by 3000+ college students with "questionable" attention spans while behind the wheel ::)

And I have to agree, the Mach 1 has one of the most comfortable interiors of ANY car I've ever driven or been in. They really are a pleasurable car to drive.

The Galaxie, with it's huge, red, bordello-like interior, will always be a favorite for the Trunk Monkey.

Wow, I wouldn't let a Mopar guy with a hammer anywhere near my car, in case he tried to fix something. :) But thats really cool that you drive these cars that much. Even the GT as valuable as it is.

Yep, when you get the poster made I'm on the list.  You've certainly carried the banner for us FE guys, prob'ly made our cars worth just a bit more in the process.  HR will have to publish, yes?  I'd think F'burger would still be favorable to the cause, especially with your class response during the interview when you could have gone off on him for the early "playful" insults.  Instead, you gave them good PR on the event.  As Grandpa used to say, :  "Son, that is how you do that". 8)
