Several times I've been to the car wash, apparently after they cleaned one of those. ;D

They float it is just this one thing....the bottom of the door
is about a feet under water. When we was driving through
some quagmire just like in the film. The codriver in one wagon
opened the door to get out ;D ;D ;D ;D. They had some washing to do
when we came back to the armybase while we other had dinner

Personally I have never been much of a off road kind of guy, but that thing is freaking awesome! I assume that the tracks of the trailer must be driven hydraulically from the front truck unit? I have to wonder if Greta would approve of such a contraption tearing up Mother Earth? >:( :D

The trailer is mecanicali driven. No you cant drive without a trailer or...can or can
you end up without stearing since the only stearing is between front and rear traile
a thing thats unique on this BV206 is the beam conecting front and rear trailer
its not hinged with bushings in the traditional way it is made in a special profile
that flex with the movment of front and rear
We sold a couple of Studebaker snow weasles last month to a guy that had the mecanical parts
from a BV 206 and needed a rear axle with "tank"stearing so he was going to built
kind of a hotrod weasle

That's fantastic little track vehicle.
I was at Ft Benning, GA, at track vehicle school, in '66 and got to work on most of the track vehicles, of the '60's. I've always loved them. I got to drive the M60 & M88 recovery vehicle, as well as the APC (with 361 Mopar and 6-53 Detroit). The M88 had a gas version of the 1790 ci Allison (M60 was 750 hp diesel), it had a FI, twin turbo, 1050 hp engine and a awesome, hydraulic impact wrench.

Maaann......do you live near central Florida? I've got this big (really big, and it is heavy too! :o ) restoration project involving an AV-1790...........I'll buy the beer! 8)
I realize that the sixties was a while ago (and I can't remember what I ate for breakfast ::) ), but just a little detail: These engines were of Continetal Motors design with an Allison transmission ('cross-drive'), the M48's came with the AV- & AVI-1790's these being the carbureted and then changed to fuel injected versions of these V12 air-cooled engines; and the M88's came with the AVSI-1790 which was the supercharged/fuel injected gasoline engine (had more to tote and needed the extra H.P. ;) ). The centrifugal superchargers were mounted low and center on the sides of the oil pan and were driven by shafts from the inside of the pan off the crankshaft. Later these gasoline engines were replaced by diesels (AVDS-) exhibiting twin turbos mounted high and to the rear.
This evolution from a naturally aspirated gasoline engine to mechanical fuel injection, to supercharged & fuel injected, then to turbocharged diesel, with significant increases in power output while also increasing fuel consumption efficiency, was quite the achievement on basically the same engineering foundation of not too modern of a design. :)

The BV 206 had a Ford 2.8 V6 converted to carb from F.I
a 4speed Mercedes auto trans with park removed. They where
constructed with Mercedes Diesel first but the army dont wanted
the higher cost with Mercedes engine since they calculated the
life span to only two years. fibreglass body, i believe Volvo truck
(Spicer) differentials
they got converted to a Mercedes 6 cyl turbo diesel later to save
fuelcost

Sorry, I'm on the other side of the US, in Oregon but, even so, I was only a 2nd echelon mechanic, we didn't get inside the engines. That said, they are very "easy" to pull with all quick disconnects and dry break fittings.
Regarding fuel mileage, as I remember, the 1050 hp, gas engine, got 2 gallons, to the mile, average.

my was brad new ch nr 027 or 127 if i remember correctly

i realiced it is soon 40 years since :o. 83-84, we was among the first to get them
Mine was brand spanking new. but my M 45B had a worn out barrel, three shot group
about 40 inches in 50 meters. The Leutenant said i needed a lot of training, i said i need
a new barrel. Mighty words from a fresh recruit he sad. But still true i said
If i give you a good barrel, and you shoot a 4 inch group i give you 25 bucks. If NOT.....
