Maybe I should title this "ode to my 'lil Ruger". ;D The reason I am posting this, I am up to 9 guns between my girl and myself. I went to the range Sunday and shot all of them. What struck me is maybe my best gun is one of my cheapest. It just kind of surprised me. It is my little Ruger LCP. It is the old version, not the LCP II. It is cheap, plain, non-exciting, not super powerful. Just dull from looking at the spec's. However it is one of my favorites. It reminds me of a SBC or Windsor SBF. It is not a Hemi or 427 Tunnel Port, or L88. It just "gets you to the store". Hell, it's mostly plastic (polymer).
BUT, it has never once jammed with probably getting near 1000 rounds through it. FMJ, HP, +P, etc. It is very small, yet I can get two fingers on the grip which is enough The ergonomics are good. I can shoot it well. On the other hand my Kahr CM45 makes me look like a chump. The LCP has a reputation for being snappy because it is so light for a .380. I don't find it that way. I have a .380 Seecamp and it makes me bleed after a few shots, either my trigger finger or the web of my thumb or both.
I have guns smaller and bigger, from .22's to .45's, guns costing 3-4 times a much, but that little Ruger is just well engineered and well built.
So, the question is, what is your favorite gun?
And no, I have no affiliation with Ruger. I own S&W's, Kahr, NAA, and others.

Sig p229 in .40 for hand gun.
Colt m4 carbine
Aero precision 6.5 Creedmor

Funny you bring up the not the big name aspect.
My favorite is a Taurus, stainless Barretta rip off 9mm. No “knock down power”, not the original maker, as a matter of fact a supposedly (some say, not me) inferior maker. But it fits my hand like no other. It’s shoots beautifully. It’s gorgeous. It runs and runs. I love it.
I love my S and W’s too (they’re wonderful) but when you say favorite, I think of that pistol.
-
Best concealed carry is my Sig P365.
Best rifle is my Savage 112 target in .338 Lapua.
-
.338 Lapua. I’m really interested in one, it’s impractical if you’re not already established in the caliber, with the current climate we’re in however. I like the idea of the Savage.
-
Oops, I forgot. Springfield M-1 Garand. Piece of history that always goes bang. It’s extremely comfortable to shoot.
-
I'll second the M1 Garand and my Colt 1911
-
Handgun, Glock Model 19. I know, I know. Long rifle, I love, I mean really love my Mini-14!
-
The gun that I enjoy shooting most is my stainless Rugar old army, so I guess that is my favorite.
-
Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting 12ga sporting clays shotgun, or my LC Smith 3E 12ga made in 1912
-
Some neat guns for sure guys! I guess I just surprised myself in that one of my favorites is one of my most mundane, unimposing, and practical guns. It is well made, but it wouldn't be considered exciting by any means. And it isn't worth much.
My dad in law has a .50 BFR pistol and while it is a hoot to shoot, I don't think I'd want one.
I shot an M1 about 15 years ago. I liked it. It kicked harder than I thought it would. I shot an AR15 at the same time and it didn't "feel" as good.
Anyway, they are interesting machines. As in cars and engines we can appreciate the thought, knowledge, and skill that goes into making them.
I want to hear some more......

Going along with the LCP theme of cheap and fun, I really enjoyed my Remington Nylon 66. Would love to find one now but they are too expensive for what they are.
Agree with the Mini-14 as well.
-
S&W M&P 9mm with an Apex aluminum trigger and short reset sear kit is my most accurate centerfire handgun. My Ruger Redhawk 41 magnum is another favorite along with my S&W 4013TSW 40 caliber. Favorite rifles are my Savage Model 12VLP in .204 Ruger caliber; 8.5-25x50 Leupold, and my Winchester 70 7mm Rem Mag with a Leupold 4.5-14x40. Both of these scopes have the CDS (custom dial system) that are matched to my handloads.

In terms of what do I lay hands on most often, it's a toss-up between my Colt Combat Commander, the shorter version of the 1911, redone to my liking some years ago by a 'smith now gone from us. On the other hand, I've somewhat replaced it with a Kimber Ultra CDP II several years ago. It's most likely to go in the Wilson IWB when I go out. The only things I've done to that is to replace the trigger with a bit lighter one, and install a Bar-Sto 5" barrel. It sticks out the slide by two inches and is MagnaPorted. Taking weight off the muzzle settles it into my hand a bit better. Both are in .45 and wear Crimson Trace red laser grips. With either I carry an off-side Wilson double magazine carrier that matches the holster. The carry-in-the-gun magazine is a Kim-Pro that holds seven, which with one up the spout makes 8. The magazine carrier has 8 round Kim-Pros so I have 24 rounds with me.
Mt favorite rifle is a Ruger #1 in .45-70. It, too, is MagnaPorted to help keep the muzzle down. Depending, I may load it with black powder---actually a compressed load of pistol-grade Pyrodex---and a 405 grain self-cast linotype slug or one of a number of jacketed possibilities if shooting smokeless.
When I was an inner-city landlord in Detroit, I had a MAC 10 that made the rounds with me when I was collecting rents. I had 76 units.

Was at the range the other day for a Civilian Marksmanship Program match with M1 Carbines. While there Mrs.-T and I had opportunity to shoot a few M1 Garands and Mrs.-T thinks that we MUST get one. I must admit the Garand fit me pretty good and didn't kick as hard as other rifles I've shot in 30-06. Very sweet indeed.
As far as pistols go, Mrs.-T's S&W .357 Magnum 6" stainless is by far my favorite. While we have semi-auto's, give me a wheel gun any time. If I'm going to a remote place off roading or camping I'll take my Taurus .38 revolver. Nothing fancy, just goes bang when you pull the trigger.
And yes, we still have our guns and gun ranges in SoCal.

Hi Everybody,
A long, long time ago, in another life, I was an LEO. My favorite handgun to shoot is my (as issued) S&W Frame 681. I never did anything to it other than clean it regularly. It's the most accurate factory handgun I've ever owned. For many years I was a firearms instructor. When we would have range qualifications, we used to have "Instructor Proficiency" practice. We'd shoot 6 bowling pins at 50 yards, offhand, double action. Loser would buy lunch for the other instructors that day. My Smith used to "stage" the trigger in double action; you could feel just the slightest tic, just before the hammer dropped. It was almost like shooting single action. I never knocked over less than 4 bowling pins, and I never bought lunch. I bought it on a buyback program when we switched to semi-autos. My favorite carry weapon is my Colt Officer's model. It's small enough and light enough that it's not too difficult to carry and it's fairly easy to carry concealed. It's not a lot of fun to shoot, but it carries 7 rounds of .45 ACP.
My favorite rifle was a Savage 110 in .243. I bought it because I'm left-handed, and Savage had left-hand 110's. It had a really clean adjustable trigger, and would shoot less than 1 inch at 100 yards. Assuming I didn't screw up the shot)). I had to sell it to pay for college, and I've regretted it ever since. A couple years ago, I ordered a custom built Mauser 98 left hand, built by a really outstanding gunsmith I know. It'll be in 6.5 x 55, with all the bells and whistles. I take delivery of it in June, and I have very high hopes for it. It may become my new favorite rifle.
My favorite shotgun is my Winchester 1400; left handed, semi-auto, with a skeet barrel. I shot skeet for several years with it. It swung nicely and smoothly, and I never had any problems with it. It was also my hunting shotgun. I couldn't shoot ducks and geese with the skeet choke, but it was great for rabbits, pheasants, and grouse. It also shoots Brenneke slugs well, so I use it for deer hunting. I bought it in 1974, and I still have it. Never once have I had a problem with it, and I've shot thousands of rounds through it.
I have a fair collection of guns, and I've owned some other nice ones over the years, but those are my favorites.
-
My favorite shotgun was a Beretta 390.
Used to shoot a lot of trap and skeet growing up. My dad used to shoot 20k rounds a year between trap and skeet. I didn't like it that much....hahaha
My dad bought me a S&W 617 revolver when I was 14. I still have it. It's a .22 on a .357 frame, 6" barrel, target hammer, target trigger. It's a nail driver.
All of you who shoot on a regular basis know how big the area I was aiming at in this picture is. This was off-hand, first light at the indoor range.

My Rockola M1 .30 carbine.Sweet. As for handgun, Ruger .357 mag. Blackhawk single action with a very lightly sprung trigger. My EVERYDAY carry is a cheap and dirty Phoenix .22 semi.
-
My favorite rifle, is my M1 Garand, and favorite pistol is my Ruger 1911, but my Browning 1911 380 is a very close second.
-
My best rifle is a M1A with a sage mod 0 stock, chrome barrel and a lot of other mods for long range shooting. I carried a M14 in Nam and absolutly love that rifle.
My best shooting pistol is an 1858 remington revolver I converted to 45 ACP and that is very accurate and a blast to shoot.

"Best" is such an arbirtrary term when it comes to firearms, but the theme of this topic reminded me of a pretty good gun saying.
"Beware of the man who owns just one gun...for he probably knows how to use it."
-
Favorite shot gun, Remington 1100, do they make anything else? Rifle , im a big handi rifle fan. I have several , but the 204 ruger is my favorite . Id like to buy one in 25-06 to see how it shots. Hand gun is my 638 SW , im like tommy i like a wheel gun!
-
I have a few and don't get to the range very often, but so far the Ruger Precision 6.5 Creedmor has been the most enjoyable and second to that would be my Springfield EMP40 Micro 1911. Still have yet to test my 8.5" 300 BO pistol but hope to soon. With the ammo in short supply I don't want to waste any needlessly as I don't reload.
-
second to that would be my Springfield EMP40 Micro 1911.
Great, now I need to buy a new gun. Didn't know there was a Small frame 1911 in 9MM.

Of course all of the above guns were lost in a boating accident several years ago, so now I just use a slingshot and ball bearings ;D
Happened to you as well? We must have the same luck.

... Mrs.-T's S&W .357 Magnum 6" stainless is by far my favorite.
Remind me to never cross Mrs. T! That's quite a handgun.

I bought that pistol for her after we'd been married for 1 year. My friends really ribbed me about it saying "you can't step out on her now". Not only that, I call if I'm coming home late. Something sexy about a gal when you come inside the house and smell cleaning solvent and she has her gun broken down on the kitchen table. She also has a Rossi Model 94 lever action in .357 Magnum.

Be prepared, they are pricey. I got mine used from Cabelas gun vault and it was still around $800.

I see that. A coworker is a dealer, and can get me a new one for $990 out the door. Tempting. I've always wanted one that size, in that caliber.

For revolvers, I always like the 45 Colt, originally a 1873, black powder cartridge. I have 3, in that caliber, S&W 625 and Ruger BlackHawk & Redhawk, of the 3, I like the S&W the best. It's a little smaller and lighter, with it's 5" barrel. The others have 7 1/2" barrels and heavier frames. Of the Ruger's, the Redhawk, is the strongest and can be safely loaded to 454 Casull levels, (300 gr bullet, to 1540 fps), I load it with a 340 gr lead bullet, to 1340 fps, that is all I can hold on to and control. I also have a Rossi 92 carbine in 45 Colt, it will send a 300 gr jacketed bullet, at 1800 fps, very hard on the shoulder!
The S&W gets 270 gr lead bullets, at 1100 fps, still a stout load, but much easier to control, when it's needed.
My favorite jacketed bullet rifles, are in 6mm and 6mm Improved in Remington 40X and 660 carbine's. In competition, I shot cast, plain base bullets, at 200 yards, in single shot rifles, for 30 years (12 - 14 lb rifles). My favorite rifles for that are the Winchester High Wall and 1878 Sharps Borchardt.

Funny how most car guys are also gun guys.

I believe it has to do with speed and power!

And chicks, don’t forget chicks. ;)

It's mechanical. Kinda like toy trains. Put an old gear head in front of a toy train set, and they become a 6 year old kid again.

God blessed me [I think] with 3 very expensive hobbies.
1 Guns- the least expensive
2-Cars- Have spent a small fortune on them.
3-Audio- The most expensive. Have spent several fortunes on my stero system over the years.
4-I take that back, Women are the most expensive with kids next.

Best at what? Carrying concealed? Killing varmint? Target?
That is the point of the question. What is "best"? It is of course different for everybody. I found that my "best" gun is the most useful, practical, and reliable one, that fits in my pocket. It isn't the most expensive, coolest, or most powerful.
Lots of cool answers. Thanks and keep 'em coming!

Far from the best but my favorite .A savage model 24 in 20 gauge & 22 long rifle I use it for squirrel hunting with my squirrel dog Bam Bam ! This thing is so heavy but it takes a licking and keeps on ticking.I have a Remington 1100 in 20 gauge for clay targets and doves .My dads Browning light weight 20 A couple pistols a Taurus 38 and a Ruger 357 6" barrel adj. sights .My father loved quail hunting we did that until he couldn't get around to good .Sadly not many fields left with any quail and recently the doves have disappeared don't know why .The last time I heard a quail was at the drag strip (Reynolds Ga.) No big rifles for me I never have been a deer hunter .Whenever I get frustrated with my old cars a little hunting or shooting does me wonders .My dog is lots of fun and excitement she loves going hunting for squirrels .When I shoot one she will bring it to me sometime I have to chase her but not often ,Doug
-
Doug i grew up dove hunting with my dad. Like you say not to many fields left to do that , and not alot of birds anymore don't seem like. I guess that's why I'm partial to those 1100s. He always used one, i thought when i was a kids they where the most awesome shot gun I had ever seen, still partial to them.

I'm not an alarmist, or conspiracy believer as such, but there is way too much information on this thread for my comfort. What guns I do or do not own is not something to be discussed on a public forum. There are a few things that need to be kept private in my opinion, and weapon ownership is near the top of the list. JMO, but the times we live in today are not safe from scrutiny behind the veil of a computer screen or phone cloud. Joe-JDC

I see your point and I have deleted my message.

I was thinking the same thing.....not to hard for folks to hack, or find info....but then again, if you carry a smart phone, "they" already know that and much much more. Privacy is a thing of the past today. I can go into detail but social media giants, Apple, Amazon, you enter your phone number or info and they can instantly correlate to what every IP address you are on, and they know what you looked at on your work PC, send ads to your phone etc. Believe it or not, we even did a test and 3/5 times we stated "BUY THIS" it popped up in adds even though mic access was off. Can call it conspiracy theory, yada yada, but it is fact.
With that,
My favorite day in day out was a S & W 642 w/Crimson. Carried that gun anywhere and everywhere. Amazingly accurate and concealable. Sadly it was stolen one night. Been meaning to replace it but still mad about the deal. Rifle it depends a lot on the task at hand and distance. .270 being my preferred round weather it is standard Winchester or Magnum.
-
I think I’m becoming a bit of a conspiracy theorist. I just figure everything I do is already public, I’m already on a “list” somewhere. The world we live in is very corrupt. Guns and cars keep me sane, well kinda. Be safe.
-
I sure hope no one is out there scanning for some hillbilly with a 100+ year old winchester model 12 in 16 gauge.

I am surprised Jay let it get this far. Nothing political about my opinion, just don't want anyone knowing what weapons I may or may not have. Some things are best kept to oneself. Joe-JDC

I've actually got no problem with this thread, have only had to delete one message with political overtones (although I didn't see Alan's before he removed it). Regardless, let's keep it about guns, and not the politics surrounding them.
And I'll agree that a lot of car guys are also gun guys; I suppose it all has to do with fascination with mechanical contrivances. Nothing wrong with that, as far as I'm concerned...

My apologies for putting "political overtones" in your thread. I'll stay out of it ::)

I am a long gun guy and not a Military style firearms dude..
My Fav is Remington 40X with a Unertl 10x scope. It is a scourge to those western burrowing creatures
Also my Ruger heavy barrel 77 in .220 Swift. High velocity is a wonderful thing..

This is one of my favorites ever since I saw it, this is displayed at the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco you can pick it up and disassemble it into 4 pieces.

I like target rifles and ARs.
My .223 target gun shoots pretty well. 5 shot groups at 100 yards:

Good shooting, Earl.
We had a custom bench rifle, with a Sinclair stock, 2oz trigger, and a Hart barrel in .222 Rem Mag. At 100 yards, it would shoot a 5 shot group in a .290" hole. It was one of those rifles where the rifle's capability was better than the shooter's capability.
I had a really nice .308" bench rest rifle based on a Mauser action. My dad let a guy borrow it and that guy set the rifle off with a cleaning rod in the barrel. Blew the barrel off of it. He replaced it, but instead of a nice, fat, fluted barrel, he put a cheapie on it and it never shot the same again.
-
Love those little cloverleafs on the target.. My 40X is in .222 Mag You hardly ever see that cartridge any more
-
This was kinda amusing. I was shooting a target at 50 yards with a .22 and had to stop to chase a deer away. You can see the deer near the target:

This is 1727 Annie .22 that uses a Fortner straight pull action like the ones they use in the biathlon competitions.

Very nice, Earl. I'm pretty sure we would get along good ;D
2 miles to the mailbox? Sounds like my kind of place. And I use the same Magpul buttstocks, along with a few of their other pieces. Good company, good products.
-
Yup, the UBR stock is nice since it's solid and the PRS is good for bench work. They're coming out with a cheaper PRS Lite soon. Reloading and guns are a great hobby for an old retired fart like me. Keeps me busy. I'm too damn old to be crawling around under cars wrestling with a trans or center section. LOL. The best part though is I can go to the nearby range and get my testing done in under an hour and head home unlike going to the track and wasting a whole day waiting for hours in-between passes. But it seems like you can spend just as much on gun stuff as you can on cars. :)

Too many damn hobbies, not enough time....or money ::)
