So I'm thinking of putting the TKX in my '66 Fairlane. Since I put my 427/484 stroker in my Fairlane I don't have the desire to wind it out with my toploader on the highway. I don't drive much on the highway. I'd say from home to Carlisle Ford Nats round trip 140 miles. However I'm usually taching just shy of 3500 RPM with my 3.89 gears (when I had the 390 in the car). I thought it might be time for a 5 speed. I'd like to keep the unnecessary RPM's off the 427. So I'm taking inventory of what I may have on hand. Does the Lakewood scatter shield work with a TKO?
Thanks!

I run a shortened input TKO-600 in my Mustang with a Lakewood, bolt in. The input was the same length as the old RUG-AE2
I don't know what the TKX is using, but would expect it may be a bit long without a cut or spacer

I like the Quick Time bellhousing , lighter and leaves more clearance in the tunnel.
Any aftermarket bell will cause geometry issues with your stock linkage so I would use the factory bell unless your racing.
Buy the trans with a short shaft and other than shifter location it should bolt right in just like the toploader.

I been thinking of getting the TKX too for my Fairlane , short input shaft I think is what Brent said to use with FE

You can use the short or standard either one with an FE. Just needs the right bell and a little shifter handle finagling.

Changing from a top loader to a modern 5-speed is a game changer. That overdrive gear makes all the difference in the world for the 90% of the time you're using your street car.
A shortened input shaft is the way to go. Driveshaft length and bellhousing/scattershield remain the same, shifter location is better on a TKO, but a TKX may be a different solution.

Jameson are you saying the TKX shifter location is not ideal, as in different than the TKO? I have a TKO I plan to use in my 69 Mustang, if it will fit without modification. But I'm guessing that will not be reality, so was thinking of getting a TKX since they are smaller. But if they cause other issues, may reconsider.

I have no experience with the TKX transmission, but it looks to have a different shifter that the TKO. I know what worked for my with the TKO, just unknown for the TKX. I'm kicking around replacing my current TKO in my 66GT with a TKX since it seems to have synchros that will work up to 7500 rpm. The TKO is limited to 6500 or less from my experience.

David,
Were you able to use the factory crossmember with your TKO? Which input shaft did you use?
Thanks,

i am saving up for one of these.already have the core and front plate.up to 1,000 hp rating!with all the fixes they do are suppose to be stronger and better shifting than the tko.i guess the tkx is just an updated tko.

Yes, used the factory crossmember. The input shaft is a top loader-length 26-spline version that I purchased from Brent.

Does this new TKX have provisions for a factory mechanical speedometer cable setup? Other than changing to a 26 spline clutch disc, was everything else a bolt in for an FE application?
-
After buying a TKX, do yall sell your TKO's ??
What would a used TKO go for if I may ask ??
After seein what top loaders are going for, I might look for a TKO for my 65 F100
Ricky.

Mechanical on drivers side, electric on passenger side.

Were you able to use the factory crossmember with your TKO? Which pilot shaft did you use?
Thanks,
Yes, used the factory crossmember. The input shaft is a top loader-length 26-spline version that I purchased from Brent.
David,
Is the pilot bushing the same or will that change?
Thanks,

Pilot bushing stayed the same.
New clutch disk to adapt to the 26-spline input and it should bolt right in.

I talked to Bob Hanlon today and he's getting me a TKX within the next week or two. He said Tremec hasn't figured out the short Ford input shaft for the TKX. He has a drawing and said he can cut down a GM 26 spline to work with a FE. He hasn't had time to take one apart to see if the input will come out easily. So I'm just gonna purchase the trans and work on getting it FE ready.
-
Hanlon knows his stuff. I'm sure you'll get a good solution. Eager to get your comments on the installation and how you like the TKX.

David,
If you used a 26 spline input on your TKO, which throw out baring did you use and fork? I'm wondering if the bearing will clip on my 1-3/8 fork and how the bearing will contact the the three fingers on the clutch?
Thanks,
-
I have a stock 66 Fairlane clutch fork, and a T/O bearing for a 1-1/6x10 input shaft. Best to check with Hanlon to confirm, but I don't think the 1-3/8 input shaft T/O bearing and clutch lever will work for you. Curious what clutch package you're running?
-
An 1-1/8x26 input shaft uses a small input throw out bearing and fork. Big input stuff won't work.
-
When i had my Doug Nash in place of the big spline Toploader that I had before i used the big input throwout fork and bearing on a sleeve to adapt to the small input sized collar. The sleeve was a short piece of DOM tube that the local machine shop turned to make a press fit in the bearing and clearance on the small collar.
-
I've got an early galaxie toploader that someone did that to,its a small input but the bearing retainer has a sleeve to take the big TO bearing and fork.
-
Sure wish Tremec would sell a trans with a side shifter so we wouldn't have to cut up the floorpan.
Galaxies and Fairlanes generally want the shifter to be just behind the main case on the drivers side which none of the Tremecs do. Mustangs shifters are generally at the rear of the tailhousing so the late model internal shifter trans' fit better.
