I am getting ready to install/assemble my individual tube slip-fit headers into a replica cobra. Any tips on the slip-joint as to sealing compounds and best way to do it without creating a f%$*#* mess.
I've had them together before, it's a tight fit and really a task to get everything in place and lined up. I am thinking Permatex Red Hi-Temp compound inside the female tube and then slip the individual tubes in. Other ideas or suggestions

I wouldn't use any sealant.
I use a high temp anti-sieze compound,
for ease of assembly and disassembly.
Metal expansion when they get hot is what seals them.

As said above ... high temp anti-sieze compound
I would use copper over nickel perhaps ...

I have individual primary pipes on my pretend Cobra. Several years ago I tried the red RTV because of O2 sensors recently installed. The RTV was a fail for sealing.
I've had the pipes on and off many times during 27 years of ownership. The easiest side pipe installation for me has been:
a. Bolt on the the individual primary pipes, leaving them somewhat loose.
b. Use wood blocks to hold the side pipe in its almost-installed position.
c. Spray the ends of all pipes with a bit of WD40 before insertion.
After steps a., b. and c. I can get a side pipe and the 4 primary pipes joined in 1-2 minutes. Occasionally a bit more time.

This. Even works on the 1993 F-350 with the right side exhaust tick. Get it warm and it shuts up nice.

If its a good snug fit sealer shouldn't be necessary, the anti-seize is a great idea in case you ever have to take them apart again, but they probably still won't be easy.
