I sold a set of my rocker arms and the fees were $69??????!!!!
I'm getting ready to yank everything off of there. Ridiculous.

Final value fees are now up to 10% on car parts, and you are charged on the shipping and handling too. And now in our state, the buyer has to fork over another 8% for sales tax that ebay automatically adds to the invoice. Legally, you do not owe sales tax on an occasional sale of a used item, but Ebay does not discern that for you. So you get stuck with it anyway.
-
Also, if your auctions get rated as "item not as described" they will charge you another 5%.
If they find your contact info in the auction, or you somehow otherwise provide your contact info to buyers, you will be charged an additional 5%.

Brent , give me a email at ericphilpott@att.net , I’m interested in a TKX , shifter and clutch for the Fairlane

I haven't sold anything on there in a long time but didn't it used to be like 4%.

Man dont get me started , and they are forcing people to link bank accounts directly and all kinds of other ignorance....Personally im done with Epay... It was becoming quite the circus before this last straw... Scammers paradise.

Before ebay MasterCard, the charges were the ebay selling fees, then PayPal fees. It's a single selling fee now, typically around 11% of the total. Sales tax is applied to the total, based on the buyer's address. The seller doesn't handle the sales tax, as ebay pays it to the state government.
We all saw the sales tax charges coming....too much state revenue being bypassed with interstate sales to be sustainable.
One advantage with ebay is the shipping cost savings by shipping through ebay. There's a lot of things I couldn't sell with "free shipping" without the reduced shipping cost.

There does seem to be a whiff of greed with ebay these days. As an example, I have an email watch for '60 Starliner used parts. What do I get? Key fobs, model cars, necker knobs, chevy parts, old oil cans and parts misrepresented as fitting a Starliner. Some search engine!

I sold a set of heads for $1050.00 2 months ago. Ebay charged me $220 seller fee.
No more selling on there.

Wow, that is huge Greg! I'm amazed to hear all this as although I buy there, my gal sells dolls, doll clothes and other items on a drop ship basis. She's a very small time seller now but hopes to go bigger. Yet, I have seen that her margins are pretty small, perhaps due to these ridiculously high fees. Yeah, this will end up hurting them.
I had in the very distant past (20 years now?) sold a lot of Ford-related engine and trim parts on Used Racing Junk.com
Haven't even looked at that site in ages but it may be a good place to sell.
Maybe, for sellers here, a good idea to list all the fav non-E-Bay sites other might peruse for future sales. Ford, Merc, truck, performance websites?

I used to sell all my products on ebay, now I only put the books up for sale there occasionally. The fees are just too high. I also have noticed recently that the prices on some of the new products are higher than they should be. Used to be that some companies would buy products to resell and you could get a discount on them if you bought them on ebay, compared to buying them direct from the manufacturer. But I recently bought some sheetmetal for my Fairlane Cobra, and getting it direct from AMD was about 10% cheaper than buying it on ebay.
There are lots of people out there who favor convenience over value, and I think ebay is targeting those customers. It is very easy to buy from that site, kind of like Amazon...
-
I just took everything off of Ebay. Forget that.
-
I've managed to clean out a lot of stuff over the last 2 years that I have no use for on Ebay but like everyone else the last thing I sold the
fees were way to high. I have one item left and when it's gone I'm done.
I have been using Facebook marketplace with decent luck to sell stuff locally and no fees.

I have sold on ebay since 2004 and it used to be an OK site except for the glitchs getting paid in the early days.
I will have to go back to Craigslist and deal with all the scamers but I did sell a good set of 351C heads there with no fees.

Facebook Marketplace is far better than Craigslist, but the functionality is so sketchy that it still makes ebay attractive. If Facebook ever gets it's "poop in a group" it will eliminate ebay from the world...
-
I'm sad to see this happening to Ebay. I've bought a lot from the site, since 2007. But, do vote with your acceptance of what they are doing. I saw yesterday that EagleSpecialty took all there stuff off. I wondered why, now I know.
Regarding Marketplace, I'm starting to dislike them (although that's where I found my '54, 400 mi away), no matter my search, I'm getting women's clothes and a bunch of other crap. It doesn't matter if you specifically ask for Ford stuff, you give you everything and unrelated stuff. They track you, too. If I search for something on Craigslist, when I open MP, I get that type stuff, before a search and they are trowing all kinds of pro type sellers at you, with unrealistic shipping (way to low).
The one excellent thing about Ebay, is they guaranty your purchase and return shipping so, I'm comfortable with buying there. If a deal falls through, any place else, your on your own.

I first started selling on eBay in 1999. I had not done much selling for many years until last fall. I decided since I had not been able to sell at any swap meets for the last year I would clean out some of my junk. It worked like it use to with my payments going to my Paypal account in real time. I then got my first invoice for the sold items a nd it was 10%, I was shocked to say the least. Bu wanted to cleanout a bunch of the old junk.
Then came the notice that they were changing the payment end of things. Now it takes a couple days to receive my money and the fees ae removed when distributed to my bank. I wonder how the buyers would feel if I started waiting for the money to be in my hands before I ship? I hate the higher fees and the delays in receiving my money. But at the moment I don't see a viable alternative to Feebay. I have over the years looked at some other auction sites, including Craig's list. But none have had the fanatical returns that eBay has. But when my inventory gets down to a manageable level I will not be rushing back.
I use the same user name there that I do here.

I'm not a Facebooker, do they charge fees? In lurking on there I see sellers get their phone numbers blanked out if they try to bypass FB messaging.

Agree 100%! About 10-15 years ago, I was constantly buying bits & pieces from EBay, mostly for my 1959 Meteor (Canadian Ford), most was the same as a 59 Custom 300, but with a different grill, trim and ornamentation, and I was able to find parts from every corner of North America for it, but I have not bought anything from Ebay in several years. And now, I rarely even look for anything on EBay, as it`s simply too frustrating. When I type in "1959 Meteor" in the Search box, and I am bombarded by thousands of generic items, like tire valve stem caps, light bulbs, screws, stickers, and other such trinkets, I just don`t feel like sifting thru dozens of pages of "fluff", just to hopefully find one or two things that were actually relevant to my car. Plus once EBay mandated using paypal, and prevented negative feedback , regardless if you got badly ripped off, killed my interest in dealing with EBay.

..oh. and buy the way, when I decided to move 4000 miles away, and had to sell of much of my FE stuff, shop equipment, tools, books and manuals, and auto & body parts etc, I could not believe how well things sold on Marketplace.

I have the same complaints as everybody...Havent used e-bay in a few years...The search engine BS was enough for me..Thank fully I found all the stuff I needed for the cars before it took such a down slide..
-
One thing that "was" nice on Marketplace was that you could click and see who you were dealing with, unlike craigs. That feature seems to be going away

You must be a very bad person supporting the constitution and all , very bad indeed !!!!
-
Ebay seemed to start caterin to buyers over sellers a while back ....... sellers are the ones with the money ....
Now ebay wants my social security number and a bank account number before I can be paid
I have started sellin on facebook for sale forums but there are more than few that will tell you they want your item
Then will disappear or tell you they can find it cheaper elsewhere
Have only had 2 bad transactions here or on the old forum
Ricky.

Me too !! They hate my political viewpoint , have 26 more days of suspension ;D but even suspended it does let me function in the market place
I only buy ebay if it's something I can't find else where , been using it on classic cars with hard parts to find for the shop here lately

And to think , one of the cornerstones of this country and why we rowed all that way in the first place was religious and political freedom..... Bad men all around....

Trying real hard to not get political on this forum...Because Jay asked nicely, but this subject is important and worth talking about.
If you respond do your level best to keep it non-political.
There are many reasons I do not use Facebook, but one of the major reasons is their direct censorship of things they don't "allow"...which is directly political in scope.
Facebook Marketplace seems like a pretty good place to buy and sell items, but in doing so you foster, as well as agree with via use, the bias, censorship, and political speech agenda they openly apply.

YES!!! I wholeheartedly agreee! I refuse to use their dis-services, and have my web browser equipped with additions to block all google scripts (and others I select) that run in the background, trackers, amaon, youtube, and all those other "big tech" companies that place profits over principles (principles of a free society, that is).An added benefit is I don't get barraged with ads. These companies are reprehensible in my opinion.

So circling back the the original post - ebay selling fees are high, and have gone up consistently. Selling on Amazon is expensive and restrictive. Facebook Marketplace can work for local sales, but isn't very effective for out of area sales. Craigslist has faded to essentially non-relevance. If someone has a suggestion for an alternative selling venue, please share.
Ebay, Amazon, Facebook are all for-profit companies, and in a capitalistic economy, they have no responsibility to be principled or fair if it impedes the profits to shareholders. This is not new with tech companies.

No, they don't charge. In general, it's a fairly easy way to move items locally. Depends on the thing you're selling. I would not recommend for a nation wide type thing. Also depending on what you're selling, you'll get all kinds of lookie-loos and clueless people. Read the seller notes, you'll see the experienced ones obscure their contact info to hedge against spammers scraping data from the site. And stuff like "if it's still up, it's still available" "will not respond to is it still available messages" and such. People can send a generic query about an item, personally those drives me nuts. Just says the looker doesn't care enough to flesh out a decent query on the item. Took about 20 months to sell the 70 Mustang roller chassis. Lots of bullshit, will you take X, I'll come look at it (never shows), when I sell X/Y/Z I'll buy it and the best "will you take payments". No hell no.
We use it mostly to move household items and most of that is come and get, if you're a reseller get lost. We've given 2 or 3 TVs to single moms, etc. But you have to weed out the junk store people from other cities.

I sold a cheap Chrysler Van for 500.00 on FB that ran good , solid front end and all that , make someone in a bind or someone that needs a good work vehicle but was surprised how many people asked for a Carfax on a 500.00 vehicle , had one girl ask if this 500.00 dollar van would make it to Wyoming with her 4 kids ( i'm in Dayton Oh ) lol
