Title: US Gear O/D C6
Post by: frnkeore on February 03, 2021, 12:55:15 PM
I have a opportunity to buy one of these for my C6.

I know they aren't made anymore but, how reliable are they and are there parts available for them? Will they take 400 hp and what is the O/D ratio?

I installed one in a 35ft Barth Motor home with 454 Chevy with T400 back in the mid 90's back when I was Bracket racing , it will hold the power for sure , simple design and not much to go wrong inside there  , I can't remember the OD at the moment but it sure helped cruising . I probably have the manual laying around somewhere here at my shop ,

If it is the same as the Doug Nash 2 I have one apart I can check the ratio for you.

I have a hazy notion that it's a continuation of the Laycock de Normanville OD found also on my '59 Austin Healey.

This is all I know about this unit. The guy says he bought it to use but, changed his mind and has no documentation on anything.

That looks just like my DN2. I will see about messaging you the info I have on it later today.
US Gear bought out Doug Nash and continued to sell it for several years.
I have been able to buy all the electrical parts I needed for mine on the net.
All the one I have needs is the main shaft bearing [top loader main shaft bearing] and it will be ready to go.
When you order parts for it look real carefully at the source as some of them are listed for your unit but are for the Corvette unit which won't work as it is basically an automatic unit.
You can buy a control unit at a truck supply store, just tell them you want one for a 2 speed rear end, cost less then $200.00.
These are all most bullet prof and last forever.
As soon as I get the new bearing I am going to sell it as I decided to go with the 6R80 instead.

Yep that's it , like a two speed manual transmission verses the Gear Vendors planetary style , mine didn't split shift good and so I just used it for the OD

Frank
You are welcome.
Philpot
You are right it is hard to split shift because there is a 2 second delay before it shifts and that is just to long for split shifting, but they are great for OD.

I have a DNE and a US Gear as well as a GV all for C6. The "gear to gear" operation of the DNE/US unit is far mor positive than the "clutch' style GV . BUT the DNE/US is huge by comparison and difficult to fit in non RV ( what it was designed for) applications where the smaller GV is a snap. BOTH do a great job of rpm reduction "for me" on my two F350 race car haulers.

Is anyone making/selling an OD. for use with a Top Loader 4sp?

Ron.

I haven't heard of one but I guess you could fabricate a tailshaft adapter for the TL.

I don't have the equipment to make the cast housing or machine a shaft.

I would think there would be a market to adapt an R-11 to a TL. (Especially since I have 2 R-11's gathering dust!)

Depending on what vehicle it's going in (if you have enough DL length) you can remote it so you don't need to modify the trans if someone doesn't make a kit already.

I believe Gear Vendors make a OD for the toploader
