Title: Console color change

   Anyone out there have experience with color change on '62-'64 style Galaxie console? These things have a strange coating over the steel with simulated leather grain embossed on it. The original color is in the strange coating, not painted on. Would like to use acrylic enamel to match other pieces inside the car. On the other hand would dye be a better choice?

I am working on a color change in my 66 Galaxie and have finished painting all the pieces. My console and seats were already black, but I needed to do the dash, headliner, and trim. I used SEM products, their flexible coating, which covered the headliner nicely, leaving the mooncrater texture fully intact--it looks very nice. Make sure to use their adhesion promoter. I tested some inconspicuous areas and the coating seems to be pretty robust. My friend who does restorations has used it with great success over the years.

If your console was made with the same procedure as a 65-66 console, it appears to be a vinyl applique.

+1 on the SEM products.  A local auto paint store custom mixed some SEM vinyl dye for me to match the turquoise arm rests on my Galaxie.  They do offer a number of standard colors.  The arm rests have been on the car now for about a year and no problem.

I've used Dupicolor acrylic enamel rattle can on a console of the same color with real good results, but you can't go wrong with SEM products.

When applying the SEM color coats, I noticed it smelled like the Duplicolor rattle can flexible spray products I've used in the past. I imagine it will work about as well as SEM, though I don't know if Duplicolor has an adhesion promoter prep, which I'm sure makes it more durable. I believe Summit sells SEM, if you don't have easy local access.
