Title: Slick growth at speed
Post by: 6667fan on December 04, 2020, 05:59:16 PM
Posting in this forum as is racing related. Jay please move if you wish.

Trying to stuff bigger rubber under my Fairlane. There is 7/8” space between tire and wheel well front opening. If the car goes 125 mph will that be enough space?
Thanks

Oops, did not know the pic was off rotation when I posted it.

I think you'll be fine.  Would be good to remove any sharp edges that could com into contact if it were closer

A few considerations, a lot will depend on the type of slick construction and sidewall. In general a bias ply grows a lot more than many of the newer radial slicks. Then tire size, wheel size, Tire pressure, etc. all play into it. I’ve had some 29 x 9 bias ply slicks grow 3/4” on my car, and that was at about 112 mph back then. Those would touch at the front of the wheel well like that and then they leave a rub mark, so like Jameson said, be sure you don’t have any sharp edges there.

I get that this is from two months ago, and you might have already tested it out, but my vote is that yes this will work.  The previous owner of our Mach 1 had a 1/4" gap between the slicks and the leaf spring, and less than 1/2" to the inner fender on the crown of the tire.  He ran that thing at the track often and there is zero evidence of rubbing.  I think it will depend on the slicks and amount of sidewall.  I've run slicks that exhibited little to no deformation at the end of the track, and others that made me feel like I was on ice after I let out at the traps.  But again, I think you're fine.

I ended up selecting some Hoosiers that are slightly less tall. There is now an inch space between tire and the front edge of tire to quarter panel. The Hoosiers were marked with the same roll out as the Mickeys, (93), but are shorter.
Car has not been back to track yet.

Thanks
