I want to swap alt and use a 3g single pulley alt with factory brackets...is it the sm or lg case unit that will work?

I have a 3G on my 59s 428CJ, I mocked it up using both the factory high and low mount brackets , elected to use the high mount set up.There are several 3G configurations, I used one for a 1995 5.0 Mustang, fit great, but I went with dual groove pulleys, as I had heard of guys having belt slippage issues with a single belt using a 130 amp alternator. Even with the dual belts, I occasionally get a minor belt squeal when I start the engine cold. It was an easy swap, and a big improvement over the 59s original 30 amp generator.

Here is my Ford cased Tuff Stuff 140amp alternator in my 66 Comet. I added the March oversized pulley knowing I would be spinning it to 7000rpm. Single pulley has shown no signs of slipping so far. Jim

Like Rory mentioned, there are a few applications that will work. I try to grab these for cores from the local U Pull when I spot them, from around ‘96-‘97 V6 T-Birds/Cougars. They will have a Mega Fuse too you can grab and use if you want. If you are searching around the salvage yard you can look for the 3G alternator wiring harness from something like this ‘92 Ranger pickup, it’s about the right length for one of our vintage Fords. You want something that has the alternator & battery on the same side of the car, some of the applications are on opposite sides of the engine compartment. I’ve done both, a large diameter single belt pulley or a dual belt regular size pulley. If you decide to go with the dual belt pulley Jay turned me on to the Powermaster one in the picture that’s available from Summit, etc., if you can’t find a pulley locally.

Top mount will give a little more belt wrap on the crank pulley and maybe the alt. pulley too,to help with minimizing belt slip.

I bought mine new from an alternator shop. I think he said it was for a Tarus. The back of the alternator made light contact with the head. I wanted an air gap so I slid a thin washer between the alternator and spacer. I get belt squeal at times on my 8 year old belts.

I have used the Transpo regulator that mounts to the back of the original 1G. It REALLY wakes them up, used them on 3 or 4 different rigs. Works great 0 complaints, only had one fail but that was my own fault. I might have to try that 100 amp kit but honestly after using the regulator on the original alternators I've yet to need anything more.
