my comet is a factory 4 speed.i changed it to auto 35 years ago for bracket racing.it has been a street car 95%of the time.i have been wanting to change back to 4 speed for years but i did not want to swap them till i have troubles out of the c6.is it going to last forever.its done a thousand burnouts, many passes with not even a hiccup.OK something happened.i went for a ride yesterday, engine sounded good but car seemed to be a little lazy.when i got home my son said dad you have a line of fluid leading in your garage and it goes way down the road too. i looked under it last night with a flashlight and noticed it has trans fluid under it.i got up today and jacked it up and fired it up for a few seconds in and out of gear.i did not see a leak.i fired it up again and it started pouring off the bottom of the dust cover. what happened?

Front main seal most likely.
-
can i tell for sure before i pull it,i guess i could be the convertor too.
-
anybody ever heard of a vent blocked causes it to leak out a seal
-
weird part is it seemed to happen all at once,it was not leaking before because there was no fluid on my floor.

As to what happened, could be a number of things, torque converter seal, the torque converter, the pump housing cracked.
You didn't mention any converter stall ?
So, you have all the 4 speed parts that came out, so it's time to swap, or are you asking for some one to talk you out of it ?
I love 4 speed cars, but if I had to choose between the two, and can't afford one of each... ::) I would go the automatic.
Do you think the 4 speed would of been trouble free for 35 years ?
Heck with it, use your current thinking throw the 4 speed back in, run it till you have problems then go back to the automatic.

Could be a cracked converter and hub but that doesn't happen too often but happens enough for the shop manual to describe a procedure for leak testing a converter so don't rule that out. Other leak points are front pump seal and O-ring, cracked front pump casting [I've never seen that but a remote possibility] Leakage from the servo lever shaft, again rare and that won't pour out as you've described. And last a cracked case. As I posted the 1st place I'd look is the front main seal, they don't last forever.

A possibility and easy to check. One bolt at the servo and it is loose. Let us know what you find. To add: After 35 years of hard use that C6 doesn't owe you a thing. ;) With that said perhaps its time to just do a "freshen up" on that trans and go for another 35 years.

i dont think i will be here in another 35 years still driving a hotrod in my 90s.i do want to change car back to 4 speed, but i enjoy street racing the automatic.you almost never mess up. it has a b&m 3500 stall, dont seem to stall as good as it used to. i still have my 4 speed but i need a flywheel and shifter.

I'm no C6 expert, I'm a 3 pedal nut, but don't they have a case vent up high close to bellhousing ? Dirt dobber stop it up? Case pressure blow front seal? I vote top loader.

i hate to be the dummy who pulled the trans for nothing.just wanting to make sure its bad.leak is so bad all the fluid could run out in a matter of minutes.i cant pee as big a stream that pours off the dust cover.im getting ready to take another look at it before i start taking parts off, going to the garage right now

You’re not pulling it out for nothing. You’re pulling it out to put a 4 speed in.

you are right,i will let everyone know what i find when i get it out!

well im not as young as i used to be,but i got started on the swap.i got the headers off, hooker supercomp, got the bell housing bolts out, torque convertor loose, all the acc, carb, alt, fan ,rad, etc.i need to take the starter off and hook up the cherry picker.the reason im pulling the motor first is depending on funds and the c6 damage i could put it back in for now till i gather up me a shifter, flywheel and clutch for the 4 speed.i have a full fuel cell of 110,16 gallons i need to run out before it goes bad.
-
Lookin at the front of the trans there is a welch plug in the lower left below the pump. This plug has been known to leak.
-
i pulled the engine out today.about the time i sat it on the floor my wife hollered to come eat thanksgiving meal.after that it was all over, stomach packed done for the day.the front of the convertor is dry,but there is a puddle under it.i will find out tomorrow what failed when i get it apart.

looks like im going to go back to 4 speed,my c6 is full of medal shavings.the medal looks like pieces of rounded off aluminum or similar.the front seal has no rubber on it and my convertor sounds like loose medal parts when you shake it.so i dont think im even going to fool with it.
