Title: Just general FE info Bolts for a FE
Post by: FERoadster on November 15, 2020, 10:11:37 PM
Put this spreadsheet together to organize the bolts from my 20+ FE blocks from a scrap yard here in Brookings Or.
Some may find this helpful when you are looking through a pile of 5/16 or 3/8 bolts.
Posted this on the FEForum but others may see it here
Please provide me with corrections or additional info.
Intake bolts were checked  both with a C6 S intake and a Ford LR 2X4 intake.

Richard >>> FERoadster
Saw 2 errors Crank pulley bolts are not Fine thread. Oil PU to oil pump are 5/16, missed the cam bolt

A little more involved than just length. Take a look at the original timing cover bolts. They have nylon inserts in the threads.

I'll pull some out of a shortblock with a TC installed and see what I find.
None of the ones I have taken apart seem to have the nylon locking puck.
Was that a later year change?
I'll be updating the spreadsheet later today.

Aren't the oil pan bolts that go in the front cover longer? Or maybe that's just how I always put em back together. And I believe there are 2 different lengths of necked down rocker arm bolts.

Currently looking for some of the bolts that connect the driveline to the C6 transmission.
They are 'special'.  :o

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to check  the oil pan bolts , but C6 trans bolts? drive shaft to flange on a 2 piece shaft? don't know if I have those bolts but do have flanged C6's and drive shafts that match. That's farther out than I wanted to go but I'll try to get those included.

That's the ones Richard. They have a grooved surface on the smooth (non-threaded) part of the stem; apparently to reduce twisting with the torque I would guess. Looks like a wheel stud bolt that way. Haven't seen them available and not sure what others may have uses as an alternative. Farmer in me says to stick an 8 grade in there and run it. :-\

5/16"-24 x 1" on the water pump pulley, if you wanted to add one...

"Oh I'll just take a quick stroll to the hardware store for some pretty stainless hardware."  Nope.  Fine thread is a pain to find locally, unless you are ok with buying a box of 25 or 50 from Fastenal.
