Title: putting out feelers
Post by: Stangman on October 01, 2020, 09:12:43 PM
So I have 2 questions, was just wondering if it would pay to get cylinder heads ported. Most know my setup 280/288--621/624
solid cam out of the box survival heads. And I know having heads that flow well are always good but without changing the cam to a bigger cam im wondering if these heads flow enough for this cam and power output might not benifit with this smaller cam.

Also I have almost 1500 miles of street miles and about 50 1/4 mile passes and 60 1/8 mile passes does anybody think I should be putting bearings in at this point. Im not seeing any problems just thinking preventive maintanance. And while i had it apart is when i would get heads ported if you guys think it would benifit.

What's the duration at .050"?

I think you'd absolutely benefit from port work with the displacement and rpm you're running.

Barry has more experience with those heads than anyone. I think I'd wait for his response, but I'm guessing you'd have some room for improvement.

If the engine is out and the heads off, it certainly wouldn't be much work to check the bearings. Only the main cap bearings would need to be checked (where the load is), but I'd be more interested in having a look at the rod bearings. If they looked good, you could just button it back up and you're only out a couple of pan gaskets. Pretty cheap for the peace of mind.

So duration @ 50 is 250 intake and 254 exhaust lobe is 112. It seems to me that it doesnt like rpm over 62-6300 it drops off there.

Thanks Doug your probably right, and if I don’t do the heads I can do bearings at least rod bearings in car
