Has anyone installed an 1 3/8 input shaft in an Np435 4 speed. I have a 78 ford trans. and was wondering if I need more than the shaft and a bearing retainer. Will I have to enlarge the hole in the gearbox?
-
I'm curious, as I know a toploader changes nothing between big/small inputs.
Wonder if it takes the same bearing as a toploader? I can't recall the number off my head. 307? Been too many years since I bought one.

I have never done it, but cool, is it out of a bigger truck? Be sure to check length
I can't imagine they change the bearing size, but I have never done it, and didn't know it was a thing LOL

U haul trucks in the 70’s. I actually bought a N.O.S. Input shaft and retainer, from a place that fixed U-Haul trucks. It’s the only part of an NP435 I’ve ever broken.

Does it still use the FE size pilot tip? I have an FT 4 speed tranny that uses a huge clutch and it's big spline input has a much larger pilot tip, probably an inch (i could measure)
-
For some reason I thought that could be compensated for, with a pilot bushing. Now I will go measure the shaft I have, Incase it’s not the jewel I think it is lol.

You an always turn the snout down to fit the smaller pilot bearing.

Larger 1 3/8" was common in the NP435 on the medium duty truck and AG applications, and does have a larger snout for the pilot bearing. Only requires a different pilot bearing to work with a regular FE crank. http://www.agpartsltd.com/shopping/productDetails.aspx?i=1053603 (http://www.agpartsltd.com/shopping/productDetails.aspx?i=1053603) I used to have one laying around but I'm sure its long gone. Easy swap for the big input. Input shaft, bearing retainer and pilot bearing should cover it.
Also a larger main shaft/output was available, standard on cab and chassis for a fixed 1350 yoke. And some with a e-brake on the output.
I have been looking for the tall(er) shift tower used in some applications where the shifter cane was extremely long. When used in a pickup and shorter/regular shifter it effectively makes it a short throw. Or so Ive gathered, yet to try it out.
NP435 is a tough girl, wish the aftermarket supported it better.
