Title: What octane booster?
Post by: gregaba on September 09, 2020, 12:21:16 PM
Looking for a recommendation on octane boosters.
Will be in a 428 with alm. heads [TFS]  with a 12-1 compression ratio.
Could not find anything in the search box so what are you guys using?

Depending on how much you want to raise your octane, I think these are your best choices. I only showed Amazon products because it was the easiest to locate.

VP is rated for an 8 point increase: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D38ZMVC/?coliid=IHOY724JJJ2L3&colid=7GJ5FIZB2L28&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Royal Purple is rated for a 3 point increase: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HEZQHQU/?coliid=I1OUW9QQAOBKIR&colid=7GJ5FIZB2L28&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

My car seems to like the VP Octanium.  What ever you decide to use, read the specs carefully.  Some will quote a certain number of "points" increase while others will quote "number" increase.  There are 10 points per number; a point is 0.1 whereas a number is 1.0.   For example, a booster claiming 10 point (one number) increase would take the octane from 93 to 94.  An increase of 8 numbers (80 points) would take the same fuel from 93 to 101.

Have you considered E-85?

I expect to use it in my next project. Takes a bit of looking to have a ready source, and you should use EFI for ease of delivery. But, at least around here, it's easy to get, and you can always keep some race-spec around for in-betweens. :)

I've heard good about the Boostane additive. Do you have an airport nearby? I've been running on mostly 100LL from the local airport and my car seems real happy. I'm at 12.5:1 static, and 8.99:1 dynamic. Cheaper than any race gas, too. Under $4.00/gal here. NGK #7 plugs FWIW.

I used Klotz for the street driving on drag week.

If AvGas is available to you locally then use that. The 100LL is more than plenty for 12:1 compression. You could probably cut it 50/50 with pump premium and get by. It's $5 a gallon here.

As far as boosters go, I like the VP Madditive Octanium. Make sure you use the unleaded mixture if you're running an oxygen sensor like with an air/fuel meter or efi. It also turns your spark plugs a sexy orange color.

Thanks for the reply's.
I can't get E85 here. I have never seen it in my area.
I have a small local airport 1 mile me from but don't know if the sell av gas there. I will check.
I didn't know about the point number difference-good to know.
If av gas is available I might raise my compression another point just for fun.
My engine block is still in the machine shop so it will be awhile before I order my pistons.
At least I have some options now thanks to you guys.
