I am trying to calculate the surface area needed for my air cleaner/ cleaners for my 445. I have a ceiling of 6500 and I have a max flow capacity of 1500 CFM. I doubt I will ever use that much but later I might supercharge. Thanks Guys

If this is anything like my 67 Lane setup. Flat Hood.
RPM intake and Holley. Drop base aircleaner and almost flat top equals 3 inch round KN type or paper.
I sometimes put the shiny new paper on for show time. I think it looks better than the working filter. ::)
No room for a spacer.

Wow that's tight, I am going to make a custom dual quad drop base air cleaner to get more flow. It will have a flat top but with the dual quad it will be tight, may have to scoop it or drop the engine mounts. Either way I hate to any option as I like the hood lines as they are and the other would mean a lot of work. Was looking at the 68-69 cyclone scoop, guess I could live with it and it gives me 3 more inches.

Yeah to the top, I think my intake may be taller? Can you measure from the lifter valley to you stick there? That would give me the big pic. BTW you must be beat after the snow it was a big one!

Yup I have had Holley, Rochester, Weber, Zenith and Carters. Just to name a few. The basic AFB has always been the most dependable and easiest to set up. Just my preference that's all.

Put a pair of Predators or Quadrajets on there and blow everyones mind. ;D

I measured from the top of the air cleaner to the dist hole and have 11 1/2".
You should be able to squeeze another 1/2" on that.
Yup, getting pretty tired of the snow. It's been a snowy winter here. :P

Was gonna do predators but size selection and linkage were going to be harder to work out. In the future I may convert the intake to port injection and run two throttle body's but getting the car in one piece is first priority.

Cool I can get a 1 inch spacer with a 1 inc drop base and 4 inch filter all under there, I come out to 11 inches total with a flat lid. Thanks Howie (-:

After further calculations I miscalculated. I would.still be about two inches over. If I remove the spacer it will go but I wonder at what cost?

into the confines of the underhood and around carb. Obviously you want to minimize sharp edges/steps and lean toward base-ball and larger curves. Get a look at the used NASCAR air filter housings on ebay for how to do it right. They even use fins in the middle of passages to stabilize the flow. Any filter will have restriction and alter the stability of the airstream, just that a large filter will have less effect on flow. The more media the lower the velocity through any given area of that filter. The lower the velocity the better the filters ability to capture and hold contamination as well as the longer it will go w/o increase in delta-P.

I settled on a 14 / 20 / 4 oval with a 1 inch drop base air cleaner. Waiting on K&N to shoot me a quote on the element. Got some pics in my project file of the progress and got some of the welding done but got too cold to continue due the helmet fogging up LOL.
