Title: DSS pistons
Post by: gregaba on August 11, 2020, 11:43:39 AM
Anyone using DSS pistons?
I am ready to order some new pistons and was looking at Icon, JE, and DSS pistons.
Looking for a reasonable priced forged piston for my build and have not bought any pistons for a while and don't know what are the good brands.
Thanks
Greg

I like using pistons that have a more modern ring pack.   The 1/16" & 3/16" stuff is almost antiquated now.  We're using a lot of 1mm and 1.5mm rings.  Racetec is an option, as well as Mahle, and Diamond.  I use all 3.

I have some 80's vintage BRC pistons for my 428, they use .043" top rings.

What's the oil ring pack thickness?

Greg,

There is definitely some gains to be had with a modern ring pack too....some good info out there on that as it relates to friction and power.

Decided to buy a set of Racetec's from Brent.
As soon as my engine gets out of the machine shop [hopefully by the middle of September] so I will know the new deck height so I can order.
Looking forward to building it and getting it in the 63 Galaxie next year.
