Title: 450ci FE Pulling Engine....
Post by: blykins on August 11, 2020, 07:01:55 AM
This is a couple of videos from a forum member, Cory Bloom, running one of my 450ci FE engines.  Even with some worked over D2TE heads, we were still able to make about 570 hp.

Cory is having trouble getting the suspension dialed in and is trying to get rid of some wheel hop at the beginning of the pull.  He will eventually get it and is sending videos along the way.  I love hearing him get it going and getting into the gas pedal hard.

Some TFS heads and a TFS intake on that punk would make it a bad mamma jamma.

I’ve always been amazed at the power D2s can make.
I just sold my 4x shortbed with a D2 440 in it. Part of the deal was that I get the engine back.
It’s a good friend so not worried about the downside of that kind of deal.

Can you give details on the cam in that motor?
That is stout, did not know they would support quite that much power.

After my own heart! Sounds stout, tight track 35" tires guessing a 27 final ratio and spun at the big end. That's what you want to see.

I would also like to hear some build details just happen to have a good set of d2's slated for a similar project in a 74 highboy.

I certainly wouldn't recommend the D2's if you had a choice.

These had been ported by Les Schmader,  but there's only so much you can do with them.  My guess is that they flowed around 260-270.

Cory was trying to reuse as many parts as he could.   He originally was pulling with a hydraulic flat tappet 390 that was up against some LS engines and just couldn't get the grunt out.   He bought a lot of parts for future expandability purposes, such as a steel crank, Molnar rods, etc., but cylinder heads weren't in the budget.  So we worked with what we had.

I think that compression and camshaft make that engine.  It's a 13:1 engine with some custom domed pistons and the cam is one of my custom solid rollers.  It's around the 260/270° mark at .050", on a 112 LSA.  It's one of my tight lash rollers, it's setup at .010" lash.  Since it's a wet sump, factory 428 block, I went ahead and shut off the oil to the lifters, so I wanted to make it as easy as I could on them.  Spring pressure is 270 on the seat and just 600 over the nose with this cam.

Can you explain thinking on that ?

Pulling engines have to make sustained pulls at high rpms.  It's not uncommon to see them run wide open at peak hp rpm for 15-20 seconds at a time.

I want all the oil I can get to the bearings in that scenario and when I'm constrained to a wet sump system, I restrict a lot of oiling off.  In this scenario, we were using Morel non-pressure fed solid roller lifters, oiled by splash, and I plugged off the oil going to the lifters.  Fed the rockers through the head, through restrictors.  At rpm, everything gets plenty of oil.

Interesting. Guessing there is enough oil in the valley to keep the lifters from galling in their bores....or enough going around they get it from underneath.  Learn something everyday.
