Title: The new "Godzilla" 7.3 is now available as a crate engine....
Post by: cjshaker on June 30, 2020, 10:46:54 AM
Several people were wondering if it would ever be available as a crate engine. Apparently Ford heard the masses and responded quickly....

Not too terribly priced.

I have been waiting for this for our '97 F350. The 460 in it now is a total gas hog....like 6 mpg gas hog, and no power to give it an excuse for sucking down so much gas.

Now the question.....what transmission bolts behind that thing?

Price tag isn't terrible at all.

No adapters yet that I know of, but I'd venture to say that aftermarket suppliers will be getting on it shortly.

Awesome to hear, and price isn't insane, figure street price should be lower.  I know I had a lot more than that in a 408w and it didn't have the crossbolt CG block.

I posted in another thread, they're seeing right at 400cfm from ported heads, insane.  I'll have to go back and read how good the rods are, if they're powdered metal or did they actually put forged rods in them.

Curious if it has provisions for a pilot bearing of any sort, love to put something like this in from of a NV4500 and make a great old tow rig with better mileage and reliability.

Oil filter is in a very bad place to put it in a 60s Ford

Very cool, would like to see one in my Mustang with twin turbos and a big bad automatic....

It uses the same bell housing as the Mod motors and Coyotes.

Now we need a carb intake and a distributor kit

I guess it's neat.  ::) Still a bunch cheaper to build a big 460.

I drive one every day, would love to stick one in the dragster LOL.  In a 6500+ lb 22' long F-350 DRW using Eco mode I average 12 over the last 250 miles and that includes two 30 mile pulls with 12500 lbs on the back.  Gets around 7~7.5 pulling out here depending.  That's a 7.5' tall 34' trailer that has the max frontal area listed in the tow ratings.  Easy get 12.5 plus on the highway on a trip.  IF we could go anywhere, dammit.

Assume you can get it for $7k, you get a brand new CG 6 bolt block, steel crank, aluminum heads, roller cam, EFI ready that makes 505hp/515ft lbs with headers and tune.  Then consider it's OEM quality, modern gaskets, and assumably gets better mileage than any older platform that's similar displacement.

Big question will be if Ford creates a standalone ECM setup like they do for the Coyotes, which would run an extra $1200 or so.

I think the price is really reasonable.  But it's still not going to look right in an FE car.  I don't like mod motors in early Mustangs, and this would be the same kind of deal.  But maybe with a revised exhaust at least you wouldn't have to cut the shock towers...

I was thinking how nice it would be in a ‘67 - ‘79 truck.

Hey, Chris! Your dragster would go much, much faster with this Ford offering!

Only one problem: you'd need to rob a bank first!

I'm with you, I'd love to do an older truck with modern drivetrain so I can tow reliably with somewhat decent fuel economy.

I could buy a 4 link dragster with a 588 at 1200 HP for less than that LOL.

Told my wife, that crate 7.3 plus a 10 speed trans probably run 15K~18K.  We could drop that in the old 1993 F-350 and it would be sweet.  And it'd still be worth about $5000.

That 7.3 at maybe 750 HP could get the hard tail right in the top of the 4s 1/8 mile.  If it's a Mod/Coyote bell, then somebody probably already makes a Powerglide adapter plate.  Some spacers for the converter and there you go.

Powerglide???  Use the ten speed automatic. Chirping seventh gear at half track would be cool.

Hmmm, I wonder how much hassle it would take to put it in a 64 F350. Love to see if a NV 4500 would be a match with a decent set of rear end gears for towing. Does this motor need a special box to run the EFI? And is there any mention of a stand alone system for it? Thinking out of the box again.

I haven’t seen specific links to controllers, but I’ve seen references to control packs coming from Ford, and also that Holley will be adapting their system for it (believe they currently have LS and Hemi specific boxes as well).

Ford always releases a stand-alone ECM for their crate engines. They wouldn't be much good without one.

If this is the modular bellhousing, "Quick Draw Brand," has an NV4500 adapter on eBay. I wonder what the dimensions are and if they fit fairly easily in a Jeep CJ; the weight is not much more than the 515 lbs or so for the factory 258 straight 6 . . .

LOL.  393C+shorty glide leaves 1 1/4" for the coupler to mate with the rear end.

OK, so the dragster's engine sits closer to the front wheels than the rear...

An NV4500 weighs as much as the Jeep! Not very good ratios either, too big a drop 3rd to 4th. A T19 from a mid 80's 6.9 diesel is smaller, lighter and better ratios, just no overdrive.

You’re not wrong - more than 100 lbs heavier than the stock T-176. But the NV4500 can hold up to a UPS truck, and the Tremec TR-4050 seems far less strong.
