While doing some research I tripped across a post of yours in the other FE forum that appears to be a 3-month old reply to a very old thread. You asked about the L head casting, yes?
Edit: OK, I guess chris didn't see this or whatever. Has anyone besides me had a hands-on with the C6-L head?

Replied to put this back on top.

My login saved to my devices no longer works. I may work on getting my password fixed one day. What was the L casting?
Thanks

The C6EA-L cylinder head, which appears to be the most mysterious of the '66 heads.

I'm the only one with an L head. I'm special. Special Olympics special.

One I'll dig up my myth buster photos of the C6TE-G heads on a 66 352 Galaxie. I noticed the wrecked car in 1988 and bought it around 2013(?). Everything I could identify was date matching. Should have kept them just because. 1966 was an odd year for cylinder heads.
-
I've never seen a C6AE-L, had almost every other FE head. In 66 they made some different stuff for sure. High and low exhaust ports, short and tall intake ports and Thermactor and non-Thermactor. I guess every combination. Are the -L's maybe tall intake ports and low exhaust?

OK, here's the story. About 20 years ago, when people were jumping off bridges because the Millenium date/time change was going to freeze up all our technology and kill humanity, I did the logical thing and headed to the junkyard, in this case a one-man, part-time biz. This was around the time the C6-R head was starting to bask in the limelight as a CJ alternative. So I came across a '66 Merc with a dirty 390. Scraping off the driver's head, I saw that it was indeed an R head. Had to have. The owner said a couple hundred for the pair, including his labor to remove! Hey, better him than me.
So I meandered around some more and tripped over a big pile of FE's, mostly 50's and early 60's. Nothing shouted out to me as more than generic, so I continued on and got back to the office. There were both cylinder heads. An R and an L. Yikes! My mistake on not checking the other head, ASSuming it would be the same. Argh. Had the port sizes be the same, I might not have even checked the casting numbers. But side-by-side, the intakes on the R were tall, the L's were short. The exhausts on the R were short, the L's were tall. Somewhere along the line, one head got changed out with a total mismatch. I have no idea which was the original. I laughed over the possibility that Ford might have built this on the assembly line.
Anyway, I paid the man, and left. So now I have one odd R head in the pile of R heads, and this one L piece that nobody has seen. In the old forum, there is an old post from somebody with a pair who wanted to know what he had. True to form, Royce Peterson told him in that he was mistaken, and if he cleaned the heads properly the "L" would prove to be something else. Nope, Royce was wrong, as usual. Had that thread not predated my infamous disruption of the site, I would have chimed in.
You would think that, alphabetically, the L head would still have tall ports like the R, but no. Its scarcity speaks for the probable lack of design integrity, but why it was used at all remains a mystery. There are verified C6-J and C6-U castings out there. There are rumors of C6-A's, but I've never seen anything alphabetically before the J. R castings were supposedly used for x months into the '67 production year, when they were eventually supplanted by the C7-A, a somewhat questionable move. At some point I guess I could see how close the L is to a later head.
So that's it! The L head: Ultra rare and worth $5,000? Or, worth 10 bucks as a wall-mount curiosity. You decide.

Just out of curiosity, what is the date code of your C6AE-L head? Does it have a casting plant logo on it ( DIF, CF )?

Give me a few days to find it. It's in storage and I haven't looked at it since I got it. Shifting over to sleeping days and awake at nights, so maybe not 125ยบ in that room when I look.

So how did that work out when he and Hawkrod disagreed? Never knew what to say when I posted a picture of something and the response was it does not exist. Guess I am not that bright.
-
Peterson was a "my way or the highway" person. Myself and others made a hobby out of correcting his declarations, and his usual response was silence. Hawkrod was a weirdo, too, but at least he was in possession of a great variety of parts, so I would be more inclined to believe him in cases like this. I know Royce is still in a couple forums; have no idea what happened to Hawkrod. Last I knew, several years ago, he moved from Apple Valley to Riverside or thereabouts, and dropped off the radar.
Yet another strange bird was Dave Shoe. Often off kilter in his personal life, but his dedication to the FE was admirable. I'd like to see him pop up alive and well.
-
FElony, I got into it with Peterson a couple of times on the Fe forum. He was very arogant as you said and told me I did`nt have a clue about 427s. His dual oiling Cougar 427 was the best block for performance. There was an episode about the side oilers never being installed in Chris crafts and he said I was sadly mistaken, even when confronted with the proof, he told me I didn`t know beans about the 427s. I asked him how many 427s he had seen in his life and he clamed up. Having owned 6 my self and Knowing a couple of guys who had at least 14 between them, I told him he was a rookie at best. I never claimed to know it all and I still learn some thing new about 427s as time goes by.

Ran into Dave Shoe last Fall.Where there's Rockabilly/Surf venues in town,he'll be there.
Dave may be the kind to "view film" while the rest of us watch movies,I've always enjoyed
talking with him.
-
I remember talking with the Shoe, I even got a set of the 427 blue prints he copied from John V. Mine are still in the shipping tube and I hope to get them framed some day! When Tapa talk took over the FE Forum I lost my password and identity, too bad they lost a lot of the original guys and a lot of info from 20 some yrs.

Yeah, Ford is consistently inconsistent, so you can never say never. I think the oddball stuff is the most fun to figure out, as with the L casting. Poor Royce lives in black and white.

Remember me telling everyone, after checking around, that Tapatalk is yet another info farm run by the Chinese? "Oh no way, FElony. You're paranoid!" Yeah right. See all the shenanigans and glitches in that place afterwards? Insane. I'm not as dumb as I look.

Well, that's cool news. He had a chip on his shoulder about my unconventional "style", but I'm glad to hear he's still around.

I swap emails with Shoe occasionally. Everytime I learn something unexpected.

He mention any particular reason he's not in the forums anymore? Did he get claimed by Facebook?

Where is the L head?

Where is the L head?
If you are asking where my L head is, it's in a storage room that's in triple digit degrees.
-
Shoe has had some health issues and had to let all of his FE stuff go. I don't know any details.

Here's a longer list of Ford head castings. Scroll down and see our buddy the L and others for 1966. Be aware the SB heads are mixed in. Comments? Awful lot of castings. I wonder if there are part numbers or engineering numbers mixed in. Who owns any of the 1966 heads besides R and U heads? NHRA lists the A head; I've never seen one.

Thanks, replied in the other thread.

Interesting. High early exhaust ports and smaller later intake ports. I read that the lower exhaust was due to the shock tower era cars but this head shows that it worked well enough to go into production. If you take an early and late stock exhaust log, mate them port to port with one upside down you'll see the ports are mirror images of one another. Did the shock tower L head have a specific exhaust manifold different from the other low exit ports?
