How did Ford get the 494 CI in their engine?
I was wondering about how big a stroke and bore they used for these engines.
Did they use a stock 427 block or a special block for it?

The CAN AM 494 was a 385 series engine 5.52 bore 3.85 stroke.

494 CID Boss based Can-Am engine link here. Gotta go down a few articles for the engine pics and article.

Thanks for the info on an engine I know nothing about.
I was under the impression it was an FE block.
With it being a 385 series engine I see how it was done.
Thanks for the info and link.

There was an FE CanAm program. Short lived tunnel port job.

Ford did build a couple 483 cubic inch FE’s in 1962. From what I’ve read they were based on development blocks to test the 4.23” bore and cross bolted mains, and used a 4.30” stroke. They were tested on Fords test track in Michigan, and at Bonneville, and used the ‘62 Ford developed for NASCAR with the lift off ‘61 Starliner style roof. NASCAR had outlawed that car early in the ‘62 season, so it was used for speed testing with the 483 engines. Ford’s effort was written up in a few car magazines back in the day, including Hot Rod.
Here’s a link to the December ‘62 Hot Rod magazine article online:

Thanks for the link. That was a interesting story.
Funny I don't remember it as I used to get all the car mag's in 62.
I saved all of them until a flood got them in 74.
Miss going though all the old story's.

The CAN AM 494 was a 385 series engine 5.52 bore 3.85 stroke.
Note: Ford 385 series engines are of 4.90" bore centers, and the math for capacity doesn't work.............typo? ???
Scott.

Should be 4.52" bore. That works out to 494" displacement.

I think the stroke on that 483 engine was 4.34". In which case the bore must have been 4.21". Another .080" over like they did when making the 406 out of the 390.
There was a guy who had a crank from one for sale in the late 80's, think it was in the Ford Buyers Guide magazine. I called him. As I recall he wanted around $1500 for it.
