Did ford have have trouble why did they use the cast iron tail housing on cj and a pi. I have a c6 but not jet will it brake.
-
it won't break , not sure why they did that back in the day unless they were worried about young drivers and 428's ? It was short lived but enough made to drive the resto guys nuts looking for them

Kind of the same question. Why do PU 4X4 C6's have a short cast iron tailshaft instead of aluminum? I'm referring to the one with the flange.
Seems like aluminum would have been less costly.

If you wheel-hop it enough, it will break the aluminum tail housing! garrrronnnnteeeed! ;)

I looked for a cast iron CJ/PI tail housing when we built the C6 in the F-100. Like Eric said, found out they are impossible to find. We had a short cast iron pickup tailhousing but using it meant we would have to build a driveline with a slip in it. From experience I know driveline slips are a weak point. So we used a long aluminum tailhousing and bought a chromoly slip yoke. Despite my best efforts to break it, or anything else for that matter, it seems to be pretty tough.

The aluminum tailshaft housing will endure lots of drag race use BUT as Scott mentioned , "wheel hop" WILL break it. Drag cars don't usually have wheel hop . street cars do.

I know all about wheel hop i had a 67 fairlane with extra leaf and more clamps on the springs iT never would hop.The one time it did broke the front of the 9 inch shit pinon out broke the tail shaft and case on the toploader only time i lost whole drive train.
