Title: 48 rte or re behind a FE
Post by: gregaba on March 10, 2020, 06:39:02 PM
Was at a friends shop today looking at OD transmissions.
While comparing tranny size he suggested I use a Dodge 48 rte or re. The were installed behind the Viper truck so should hold the power of the Fe good.
I really liked the size of these, about the same size as a C-4. He had 2 of them out and 1 was for a 4x4 and the other for a RWD.
I would have to build my own crank and bell houseing adapter and figure how to mount a starter as I could not find an adapter for that combination with a quick search.
Any thought's of this tranny and possible adaption?

Thats what I all ways thought to, but I don't pay much attention to Dodge product's.
My friend races Diesels and does a lot of tranny work and he has been known to pull my leg sometimes.
I will check his claims out next time I drop by the local Dodge dealer and see what they say.
If it will handle the power then it is just a matter of building an adapter set up for it.
I really liked the small size of it for an OD, but if it won't hold up then I will look else where.

it's a good transmission based on a 727 ,the RH version (pre 2002) is a mechanical 3 speed and a add on electronic 4th and lock up lots of upgrades you can do too

Good to know.
I know nothing about this tranny and plan to do a little research this evening when I can get the time.
All info is appreciated.

Lenco making a 6  speed ST 1200 street trans now.  supposed to be good for 1200 HP.  anybody got good deals with Lenco?

Lencos are great tranny's but a bit expensive. $6200.00 is a little out of my budget range.
If i was still racing I would consider one as we used to run them in our Pro Stock cars.
I like Lenco's and Jerico's both but won't need that much of a transmission I hope.

you don't want 1200 horsepower ?

If I had 1200 horsepower I would have to sell some of it.

The RE version is full electronic and still based on a 727 but with a electronic governor and shift solenoids so it would for sure need a computer to operate and to be able to adjust shift points and lock-up ect .

RH is the hydraulic version but would need something electronic to control 4th and lock-up TCC along with a TV cable ( throttle Valve ) or TV Rod hooked up unless you went full manual valve body

I would say the 727 is closer to a C6 with a smaller Bell and the C4 is more like the 904 version of the 727 but it's been years since I've overhauled any 3 or 4 speed Mopars

Thanks for the reply.
I still havn't had time to research this. I am not to worried about the electronics as I can take care of that.
When looking at the tranny I was just surprised at how small it was compared to other overdrive's, It was still in the truck on the lift but looked a lot smaller then a 727 or C6.
It is just an ideal as I am still considering a TKO 600 5 speed but am comparing cost and can go either way. Might be better to go with a standard as I will be using the C8AX-6250-D cam.

Here are some tranny options, I was planning to upgrade my C6 at some point after I get it running and will probably go with one of these options:

4R70W Transmission is Done (https://www.fordfe.com/viewtopic.php?p=1033141#p1033141)

6R80 Transmission (https://www.fordfe.com/6r80-transmission-t160723-s20.html)

ephilpott is correct on the Chrysler trans. If you are going to need an adaptor plate and a computer to run it, the Chrysler trans wouldn't be my first choice.  I'd go with a 4R70w. Or, the 6R80 sounds intriguing.  My question with the 6 speeds (whether it is from GM, Chrysler or Ford) is they are all clutch to clutch shifting that takes a lot of programming including engine management to get the proper shift over lap. US Shift has a TCM to do this and claim they have a good algorithm to make it work.  I haven't personally felt the shift quality, though I think I'd take the chance on installing a 6R80 if I were to replace the C-6 in my wagon.

whatabout adding a GearVendors Overdrive?

Gear Vendors helps a little. It only does half of what an OD trans does.

I have a Doug Nash 2 add on OD unit for a C6  but it is going in my 71 Ranchero 429 GT.
I think I have decided to go with a standard transmission just to get rid of a high stall TQ and with the power range of the cam I don't think an auto would be better for the occasional street use.
I have a newly rebuild C6 with the TCI master racing kit and new TQ in it. Never used or hooked up yet I was thinking of putting in the 63.
Guess I will start looking for a tranny and bell etc in a few month's when I can get started on the 63.
