Title: Jay B, question about private messages...
Post by: BattlestarGalactic on March 03, 2020, 07:46:53 AM
Ok, I send a message, I get a reply.   I can not see my original message.  It is not in my sent file.  More then once I wanted to go back and read my first message but I can't find it.  On other boards, the messages just build upon the first sent message so you can read the whole thing.  Am I missing something?

Larry, under the Personal Message board, you have to hit the "Reply To All" button located at the very top and very bottom of the string of messages. That will keep the conversation as a whole. The "Reply To All" button is shaded dark, so it stands out more. If you just hit the "Reply" button at the top of each individual message, then it will only keep that one message. Weird, but that's how the forum is set up. Hope that helped.

Also a button to check that says “save a copy to my sent box” that can be checked.

I should have noted that, if the sender just hits the "Reply" button back to you, then you will not get the previous messages included in it, just the response. So it's a 2 way street to hit the "Reply To All".

Drew, I have never had to hit the "Save A Copy" button. I have quite a few pages of automatically saved messages, and I've never hit the button. Just FYI.

Ok, thanks Doug and Drew.  Guess I need to remember to do it differently then other boards.  It's really confused me on some reply's because I can't remember what I said and trying to carry on a conversation without repeating myself.

Weird, as "reply all" is something I never do, even in emails.   Just a safety thing.  But here you have to.

Hmm, I just looked and there is no "reply to all' button, anywhere?

I don't see a "Reply to All" button either, Larry, I just normally hit reply.  There is a separate folder for Sent messages; are you seeing that folder?  Click on the orange Messages button at the upper left of the page, and the drop down will show you the Sent folder.  All your sent messages should be in there.

Look at the very bottom of the last message, at the bottom of the page, not the "reply" "quote" "delete" buttons at the top of each message. There is a shaded "Reply To All" right next to an unshaded "Delete Conversation".

I'm not sure if those buttons will show up on a single message that you sent, but any message that is sent to you will have those buttons.

On the orange shaded "Messages" button, all it shows in the drop-down box is "Read your messages" and "Send a message". Your "Sent" folder (showing all your sent messages) is clear to the left of the page under the "Messages" heading (not the orange shaded one). I wonder if Jays is different because he is the Administrator?

If you still don't see it, I'll post a picture of it with the correct button highlighted.

And the "Save a Copy" function is automatically checked. At least on my computer it is.

I’m in no way an expert, but I’d guess some of this stuff might vary depending on the type of browser a person is using. I’m using my iPhone these days. I looked around a bit and I didn’t see a “reply to all” button, but it might be there on other browsers, it obviously is on Doug’s. My messages have always been automatically saved, unless I delete them. After reading Doug’s comment I looked, and under “Preferences” there is an option for that, and it says by default it’s checked, but that may not be the case for everyone? If I get a chance I’ll try to check a different computer and see what options show up. Here’s what the Preferences page looks like for me.

You might be right, Kevin. I didn't think the browser would affect that, just thought it was part of the forum coding, but when I log in on my Android phone, it doesn't even allow me to access messages, so maybe it is browser related? I use Firefox on all the computers that I use.

OK, I went and changed my preferences.  Now I save them and it also replies as a conversation.  I hope that means I can see what I typed when the person replies?

I do have a REPLY ALL button at the bottom of the message now.
