Title: 31 spline axles for my 1965 F100
Post by: winr1 on January 16, 2020, 02:00:31 AM
I wish to replace the 28 spline axles in my 65 F100 with 31 spline axles

I reading conflicting opinions

Have read 67 to 72 F100s had 28 or 31 spline axles and will fit the 65 housing

Thought I would got with stronger axles along with the new mill

Ricky.

I thought the 31 splines in those trucks (70-72) were a 9 3/8" limited slip and that replaced the earlier 65-69 5 lug Dana 60's. It was the only way you got a "posi" in a half ton non-4 x 4 before 73.

I have had a couple 3L50 9 3/8" third members, a friend had a 4L11... and it's not from a Drag Pak Lincoln.

But as to the question, i'm not sure those 31 splines will fit the earlier housing. They might have used a different width or pinion offset in them. Hollander manual should show them.

I have not seen a 68-72 with a 31 spline axle, but agree it would be nice, and could be out there.  Custom axles aren't that expensive though, especially when you are just asking them to lop a little off.  Maybe ask Moser.  Second benefit is a nicer bearing and seal design with the sealed bearing
