Title: Head studs in a shock tower Fairlane
Post by: fairlaniac on January 13, 2020, 04:35:49 PM
I was looking at the 390 in my '66 Fairlane which I am beginning to remove and put in the 427/484. I'm using head studs on my new build and looking at things, it's seems pretty safe to assume the heads will never come out with the engine in the car? Anyone conform or deny?

Thanks!

Not sure about your combo but one trick is to remove the headers, some other stuff and one side's horizontal motor mount bolt. Jack that side up under the oil pan and have at it. Rinse and repeat for the other side.

Studs should easily come out. Most have hex pockets for Allen wrench.  Studs shouldn't be exstreemly tightened down into block.

X2 what Keith said.  Simply remove the studs as you would a head bolt. I've done it several times.

With the dowels in place this makes sense.

Thanks!

I have studs on my 64 and have beheaded it many times in the car. The studs are just screwed out by hand, they are not tight in the block. I never had head gasket issues with them like that.
