Title: Rebuilding Window Mechanisms

Wondering what is the best lube & where on the full window winding mechanisms. I have seen the wrong grease in the wrong place make the windows very hard to operate. Any experience?

I had a 66 Fairlane that was so hard to operate so the
tooth's on the mechanism was worn down. I had to weld
on new material and file new toots. The grease was probably
the grease from the factory, hardened to a stage like bitumen
I washed them clean and used molybdendisulfidegrease on all
moving surfaces and used silicone spray on the...????where the
glass slides up and down. After that you could operate the windows
with just two fingers.
If my memory is right i had to cut some rivets to be able to get to
the Small gear that is on the window crank

Thanks Heo. Yes I believe you have take out rivets to get to the gear. I also believe you can buy those pieces now but I will probably do what you did & weld them back on. They don't operate too bad in the warm weather but they are hell in the winter.

As i remember it, the small gear is so hard that it was not worn
the wear was on the halfmoon sheetmetal  that is driven by the
small gear. i transferred the unworn part of the halfmoon to a piece
of cardboard and used it as a template to scribe out the tooth's
on the part i welded up. Then i used a file you use to file a saw
to file out the new toots.

Hahaha I wounder how many know how to file a saw today ???
and which file you use.....Another of my skills that not make any money ::)

The Falcon had a problem years back with the driver's window being hard to roll down.  I put some bearing grease on the gears and after that could roll it down just by placing my palm on the window and pushing down LOL.  In a lot of cases, it's the guides and the rollers that make the window stiff and not so much the gears.  I cleaned them up and replaced the rollers and window guide felts years ago and all 4 still work like normal.

I put new felts and guides on my Mack and you can't get the windows to hardly move.  Seems the track piece I installed in the vent window channel is pinched a touch and makes it near impossible to roll the window down.

The regulators look like any other vehicle, small pinion running a large 1/2 gear hooked to the arm that moves the window.  I used regular wheel grease on everything.

I suppose you want to use something that doesn't stiffen with temperature, making it hard to move.

This very subject came up on another forum I frequent. It was suggested to utilize height temp brake grease. Sounded like a good solution.

Bearing grease or a hi-tack moly grease.

I just bought a set of power window regulators from Nu-Relics for my 77 crewcab project and they also said bearing grease. Since I have a lot of that and it's inexpensive I'll probably use that.

Bearing grease it will be. Might even use boat trailer stuff as I have it & will be more moisture repellent.
