Title: Way off topic. A good name for the chebbie LS
Post by: AlanCasida on November 05, 2019, 06:39:14 PM
Since the chebbie guys seem to like to name their motors after rodents for what ever reason I think an appropriate moniker for their LS motor would be the Lemming for obvious reasons. :)

I am NOT a bowtie fan BUT ford doesn't have a comparable PRODUCTION pushrod engine. IF they had gone in that direction things might be different now. The 4 cam ( or any) mod won't FIT where an LS does and only makes the power when it's boosted.

I have a full size chev 3500 van (one of my rebuilt wrecks) with a 6.0 that I pull a 34' camper with no problem. The thing is stupid fast and surprises a lot of cars at stop lights. If I could only keep the traction control turned off it would be a real tire burner. Love or hate the LS, GM made a winner there. Must have been by accident or maybe some real smart young engineer.

Not to mention Chebby installed them in everything (P , K and C trucks ,Vans , Tahoe ,Impalla ,  Surburban , Trail Blazers , Camero and Vette ) making them easy to find in salvage yards every where .

Fords new 7.3 will be nice but it will be a long time before someone scores one in a junk yard because they will only be in 3/4 ton and up vehicles , slim pickens

Perhaps I mis-phrased this. I guess I view guys who put LS motors in anything with 4 wheels as Lemmings."Whatever the hot thing is we'll run right over the cliff with the other Lemmings". What got me was the latest issue of LS...I mean Hot Rod magazine where they feature a '69 Mercury Cyclone with a LS motor in it. The owner said they looked at Coyote motors but they just didn't make the same power as the much modified LS motor. First off if you are not going to race it what difference does it make whether it makes 650hp or 750hp. It's just a cop out to the Lemming wanna be. Then he goes to great lengths to make it look like a SBF for whatever reason. I know this is a tired old story that's not going away. This is just a way for me to lighten things up and make fun those guys(Lemmings).  :)

Alan that bothers me also. Don’t understand it myself. Although you can get an LS motor way cheaper than a coyote motor. My buddy’s friend took a 400 dollar LS motor put a big turbo on it and a couple of months ago ran 9.20s in a Malibu. Yes after 60 passes it has low oil pressure but for another 400 dollars he’s gonna be in the 9s again. The guy I work with has a built up LS and I mean machined block steel crank scat rods and he just did drag week and ran between 9.20s to 9.50s all week and that was with 12-14 lbs of boost. He’s going tomorrow to Atco and he’s gonna turn it up approx 20 lbs and see what she does. He said he would be happy with 8.60 to 8.80s. I can only hope Fords 7.3 can take some of that spotlight from the LS. I break there balls about the LS being a lot like the FE motor and they break my balls and it’s all in fun but with times like these guys are running it’s hard to argue.

How about Ford wanna be. That’s what I say to them

I think the big issue is price and compatibility. LS's, even one built using some or all aftermarket parts is pretty low cost for a given HP level. The compatibility issue is also huge. Ford puts way more engineering into their stuff, but that also means none of it interchanges easily. Can't swap a 385 series for an FE without changing transmissions, mounts, etc. Gen I SBC will readily swap with any version of the SBC with minimal to no changes and all the versions of the BBC with at most a clamshell and radiator change. An LS will bolt up to a 1950's transmission of your choice with a 50 dollar crank spacer that GM sells and the aftermarket has 50 clones of and pretty much any GM trans after that. A used Coyote out of an F150 which isn't the most desirable for a swap is still 5k+ out of a wrecking yard depending on how they pulled it. Then it'll probably cost another 5k to install it in something and have it running.

I agree, I hate seeing an LS in everything, but there is a reason why people do it. I just don't agree that it's the right thing to do.

That's the only saving grace of the LS:  they make so many of them that you can go to the junkyard and pick one up for a few bucks.

I also don't understand trying to disguise a gm engine as something its not. Recently seen a pretty cool old coupe with a sbc dressed to look like a Y block. They did a good enough job that several people thought it was a Y block. Why not use the Y block if that's the look you want?! Not like it was making over 300hp anyway.

If the BBC is a rat, and the SBC is a mouse, I guess that puts the LS right square in the middle.....a Gerbil. Any way you look at it, they're all filthy rodents  ;D

Well,  I specifically chose the Lemming due to the folklore that they will blindly follow each other right off a cliff.  It seems most chebbie really suffer from "me too" syndrome. That's what sets us Ford guys apart. :)

I had a lemming when i was a kid. My dad catched it and gave it to me
it was an mean evil little bastard all it did was standing on its rear legs
spitting and probably cursing in lemming language ;D And trying to bite me
with its big front teats. Dont remember what happened to it, probably our
cat Nisse killed it.

It is funny to hear here in Sweden mouthbreathers telling
everyone to convert to a CSB/ LS beacuse you can buy parts
everywhere. Beacuse they read it in some US car magazine
Ehmmm NOOOO you cant, not here. If i need 55 De Soto parts
AMC 67, CSB or whatever i have to order it

In following Alan’s train of thought. One day driving home from work I was stopped in traffic in the wagon. One of the guys in the prop dept. at work pulls up next to me with his window down and yells, “man that thing is so cool, you should drop an LS in there”
I admit it, I cussed.

    Heo ,
There is a "Swedish encampment" here in Orange California responsible for sending a large amount of LS engines to Sweden. The group changes and it is Lief who is here now. One of the others is Jahne and one guy who hasn't been here for years was Prolo or Pirolo ( last name I think). They also send older American cars back. They just bought a white '67 Ranchero from me and it is on it's way there now.

Monkey See-Monkey-Do for sure but that also applies to the big and smallblock Chevs being swapped into all manner of cars in past years.
Chevy is seen as simple and simple people like simple things.

SEMA show was chock full of LS swaps as usual and there was a bunch of parts to disguise them as something else.

I'm aware of that randy. What I'm talking about is they say you can buy parts
that  if you get stranded along the road can buy anywhere to get you rolling
again. No not here , say i need points for a 289 i Order them and have them
next day if i need something for a ls i order them and have them next day
There is a few that specialiced in parts for US cars. But you cant go in to a
random parts store and buy parts for a LS or a 289 or whatever US made
engine. Few of them cant even order parts for them

It's funny how only the chebbie guys do that. I have never, ever seen a Ford engine disguised as anything else. Or a MoPar or BOP either for that matter.

I guess I didn't get a picture of it or my camera broke when I took it, but there was a Cobra kit with a goddamned LS disguised under Gurney Eagle valve covers.
I told the guy it is like being in the shower in your Thailand hotel when you discover that the "girl" you brought to the room has a penis.
