Title: Build dilemma
Post by: 69Shakar on August 05, 2019, 04:33:10 PM
I was talking with my builder about which trick flow heads to order for 390 strokes build ....when he tells me he has a 428 block and crank already machined, sonic checked, crank turned and oil mods done, the block was bored 40 over.. asking price is 700$. Is 40 over to much for a 428?

IF it is a true 428 block, then, no.  I have a 428 CJ block that sonic checks good at +.065.  That would be a bargain unless it is a 390 block.   Joe-JDC

Hmm.  At $700, it's nearly free.  I'd make double damn sure things are what you think they are.  That is just way under market value for a real 428 block and crank with machining done.

The builder is offering it for his labor involved for machining.... customer quit the build and left the block....just need rods and pistons to go along with trick flow heads and rpm intake....

I have a set of 427/428CJ rods that have polished beams, stress relieved, sized, bronze bushed and 13/32 ARP rod bolts with less than 500 miles on them if you're interested.

Have him sonic test it in front of you, takes maybe a half hour to map all the cylinders.
Also check to see if it's a Later (cobra jet) Block and that it has the reinforced Main Webbing.

If it has an A or C scratch on the back, pay the man. Also look at the head deck to see if it has 428 cores. A sonic would be good insurance if possible.

Get the sonic map and post it here for review. They can go more than .040 like JDC’s and have sufficient beef left or they can be .030 over and be sketchy.

Pistons can be made to ANY size that there is a ring available in. No big deal. Brent or Barry could get you a set quickly.

I wasn’t going to comment because you’re getting good info, but just to reinforce.
The price is fantastic however I will throw my two cents in about checking the block over very well. As in sonic check to verify and pressure check. A good price is thrown away money if the block turns out to be bad. Ask me how I know. ::)

Ditto.  Make sure it's not a 390 block someone opened up.  Have them sonic check it while you watch.  No "fancy footwork" fudging the numbers if you aren't watching.

It's a steal if it is what he tells you it is.

The 428CJ in my pickup is .040 and runs fine. Been there for decades.

Now don’t waste your time coming for that engine... already snagged it and now I’m impatiently waiting for the long list of parts to show up for the build and install....
