Title: It's been a while.....time for another guess the horsepower game....
Post by: blykins on July 28, 2019, 06:56:20 PM
This one will challenge your brain some.  To be honest, I'm not even sure what it will do because it's got some cylinder heads that I didn't have a part in.

This is a class pulling truck engine.

*Factory 428 block, half-filled, 4.160" bore size
*Calico Coated Federal Mogul 125M main bearings, with coated Clevite H-series rod bearings
*Scat 4340 4.125" crankshaft (makes for a ~450 ci combo)
*Molnar 6.800" rods
*Racetec domed pistons, with a 1.5/1.5/3mm ring pack, compression ratio sitting right at 13:1
*Pistons sit about .008" out, using Cometic 4.250" x .051" gaskets.
*Camshaft is one of my custom billet core solid rollers.   It's 257/267 @ .050", .640"/.650" lift, 112 LSA on a 112 ICL
*Morel solid roller lifters
*Les Schmader ported D2TE-AA cylinder heads.  I got them and they had 3/8" valves, I stuck some new bronze valve guides in them and a set of SI stainless 2.09/1.65 11/32" valves with one of our valve jobs.  I have no clue what these puppies flow.  My guess is about 280-290 cfm.
*Cylinder heads are set up with PAC dual springs, PAC titanium retainers.  270 lbs seat pressure with 600 lbs open.
*Harland Sharp adjustable rockers with Harland Sharp HD shafts, POP billet spacers, stands, and end stands.
*Custom Trend 3/8" x .135" pushrods
*Intake is a very well ported (done by my boy, Lawes Mayfield) Portosonic.  It will have a 2" HVH Super Sucker on it, with a Quick Fuel Q-950 carburetor
*MSD distributor, locked out
*Oiling is taken care of with a Melling HV pump, ARP shaft, inside of a Milodon 9 quart 4x4 truck pan
*No accessories will be turning on the dyno, will be driving the mechanical water pump with an external electric motor

The plan is to have it on the dyno this Friday.

As always, the game is for ****uncorrected**** horsepower.   The closest without going over wins some Lykins goodies.   I'll throw this in the pot too:  the closest without going over combined with the peak hp rpm (guess in 250 rpm increments) will have an opportunity to buy a set of my non-adjustable rockers for $100 off retail price.  They sell for $450, I'll let a set go for $350 if you so desire.  If none of that makes a bit of sense, let me know, and I'll try to clarify.

Happy guessing.

I'll throw 632 hp out as a start, and thinking i'm a little high. Please post the torque curve. That will be real interesting to see with 112s

I think you’re a little high too, especially uncorrected numbers.

The longer lobe center should broaden the curve and extend it higher where we need it.  I’ve used up to 119 degrees LSA on some other engines that pull sleds for a living.

I agree with that!   13:1 compression with around 450 cid and decent induction should make a boatload of torque.

605 @ 6000.

Also please post a link when it hits the track. Love to see a video.

OT and not FE but pulled my old beater 77 dually in the local pull last Friday. Worn out 400 held it's own and made a respectful pass against the big 4x4 diesels that where anything but stock it was just for fun, and I had fun! Got a lot of compliments afterwards. Thought I would share for anyone who wanted to listen.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the peak HP is a bit lower than the internet consensus, but I expect the torque to be earth moving.  Please, Please post the complete torque curve.

550 HP @ 5900.

Maybe close to 600 ft-lbs around 4500?

Brent, Would it be possible post the minimum idle speed and idle vacuum? Interested because some "stock" pickup pulling events require 15"-17" Hg vacuum at idle to be in a "stock" class. Doubt this cam will come close to 15"-17" Hg.

Post by: blykins on August 01, 2019, 12:16:38 PM
Clark, this isn't a mild cam.  It won't have any vacuum, nor will it idle down low.  Idle will be at around 1200 rpm.

When do you plan to run it on the dyno?

Clark the guys around here hide a vacuum pump to run (stock) class to help at idle.

Ok, fun day at the dyno today.  No issues except for a new oil filter adapter that had a little gouge in it that led from the top oil passage to the top of the flange.  Under pressure the thing leaked like a sieve.

Other than that, had a lot of fun.  The engine sounded really good idling.  Even at 1200 rpm, it had a unique sound to it.  And with any higher compression engine, it always *feels* good when you're standing near.

This was a very solid combination.  I didn't note it in the build specs, but this is a newer lobe from Comp that runs on just .010" of lash.  It should be very easy on the valvetrain.  I set the cold lash at .010" and when I checked them hot, they had not moved, so it was a very stable combination of valve springs, rocker arms, etc.

So for the numbers....

We made peak hp of 568 hp @ 6250, with a 1.07 correction factor.  So, the uncorrected number is 531.  I haven't looked back through the posts, but whoever guessed nearest 531 without going over will win.

Peak torque was 536 lb-ft @ 4500.  Those are corrected numbers.

I didn't expect this one to be a torque monster.  Any time that you have a large camshaft with rpms in mind, the torque will generally be less than the horsepower.  The longer lobe separation helped it hang on as it still had 564 corrected horsepower at 6500.

All-in-all, the camshaft and the higher compression were tools to band-aid the cylinder heads.  We basically made 2hp per cfm, but if we were to slap a set of TFS heads on this puppy, I bet the horsepower would go through the roof.   My customer was trying to keep this on much of a budget as we could and his viewpoint was to reuse the heads and spend the money on the bottom end, as we could always swap heads later.   I think that will be the goal.

Just for data's sake, we ran this at 140-150 degree water temp.  A/F was 13:1 and that big, deep Milodon pan made the oil temp go DOWN as the pull went up.  Cool stuff.

If you're on Instagram, I have videos going up.  I'll try to YouTube them too.

Love to hear a puller. Looks like we all overbid but 3 with Jameson Racing taking the win at 519? The heads must really be holding it back. Dang it I was wanting a discount on a set of them rockers lol.

Brain challenge executed. I was reeled into a big number due to that CR and cam. Just shows where heads that can really effectively move a lot of mixture make a profound difference.

Posting uncorrected numbers puts an extra variable into the game which makes it more challenging.  Not only do you have to guess what the engine will make, you have to guess what the weather data is doing to the numbers.

It also keeps a few random members from whining and complaining about the correction factors on various dynos.

That is pretty amazing considering the "pedestrian" heads.   Nice job!
