Title: One of those 428 CJ wonders ??
Post by: 427LX on June 18, 2019, 06:51:24 PM
Why didn't Ford continue with the dual Holley 4bbl. Medium Riser intake setup on the 1968 1/2 428 CJ Mustangs?
It was a well sorted out setup and multi carbs were still THE thing in late 60's! Ford had it on the 1967 GT 500 Mustangs!
Tasca's KR-8 had that setup!

I’m guessing it really wasn’t needed at CJ power level, and dual carbs and aluminum intake raised costs

By that time Ford was trying desperately to fly under the insurance underwriter's radar. As a salesman friend said in '67, "I could give the kid the car and then finance the insurance for him just to get it out of stock".

Four Words:

"National Emission Standards Act"

This went into effect for 1968 models.  It was the first federal emissions standard, and knocked down allowable hydrocarbons by 72% compared to 1963 levels.  This alone killed the dual quads.   :-[

Now I wonder if there were any prototype 2x4 closed air cleaner/pcv systems.

What did a California emissions GT500 have? Don't think anything but a smog pump.

I figure the emissions deal for sure. And ford just wasn't aggressive enough on the street by the late sixties. They seemed happy enough to play follow the leader on the street as long as they were winning on the track. But oddly, rumor is Ford was working on a tri power set up for the 429 around 1970. Using the same carbs as the Chrysler 440 six pack set up I think.

Well, my take is that it was the era where dealers, at the company's mandate, fixed EVERYTHING that even a moron could wreck, engines, transmissions, rear ends you name it save actual collision damage. Making it faster only hurt the bottom line.

Good God I remember fellows who should not have been within 10 yards of a muscle car getting all kinds of free warranty replacements of over-revved engines, broken trannys and shelled rear ends for free, often including, no kidding, a free tow job!

These customers  took extreme advantage of the dealers, for sure!
