Title: Tranny up shift 2-3
Post by: Stangman on June 08, 2019, 06:03:36 PM
So took car out for the first time after surgery. Wasn’t running that great till it ran for a little while, took it for a ride adjusted carb and all was good. Took it for a couple of short rides all good. Just got back from a pretty good ride maybe 20 miles. Got home readjusted carb running mint, shut it off and one of the kids wanted to go for a ride. Start it up take off and all of a sudden it doesn’t want to shift automatically into 3rd. It’s a TCI tranny and it’s my second one that I’ve had and both of them shift 1-2 within 20 feet and into third about 50 -75 feet. Now it’s shifting into second at 75 feet and doesn’t shift into 3rd. Now I just put a new manifold on and ran a new modulator hose, which I’m pretty sure I couldn’t have burnt  a hole in it but will check of course but that would kill my back. Tranny cooler was nice and cool after the ride and it’s 80 degrees and a little humid. Could the modulator have taken a dump. This tranny only has maybe 1000 miles on it.

Ok got yelled at by the wife but got under there and found modulator line off. Couldn’t get it on but tomorrow I will. Boy I don’t know about anyone else but I go right to the worst when something goes wrong all of a sudden.

I have a 24 hour rule on posting a problem.
I require a nights sleep and to dig back into it before I ask the masses :P

Yeah I hear ya didn’t want to ask so fast but remember I just had surgery and I just wanted to run it by you guys. I can’t do much and figured it was the vacuum or modulator or a piece of dirt in the governor. I’m glad it was this. Thanks for answering.

I'm no transmission expert, but I don't think the gov has much to say about this low speed shifting.  Sticky governors in a c6 always left me in third gear at a stop sign.  Don't think I've ever had the higher speed weight being much an issue.

How about my last tranny, at the end of a pass at the track almost as soon as you got off the gas it would downshift into second. I took off in second gear and overheated the tranny and it started right after that.

Sounds like vacuum modulator hooked up to ported vacuum for that symptom.
