Title: Piston skirt to cylinder wall clearance?
Post by: fairlaniac on May 16, 2019, 08:09:37 AM
Is it per side or on the diameter? Say manufacturer says to have a .004 piston to wall clearance and bore is 4.230. Is the piston skirt diameter 4.226 or 4.222?

I ask because I don't know.

Thanks!

Doug

Per diameter.  A 4.230” finished bore size with a .004” piston/cylinder clearance would have a piston measuring 4.226”.

      Doug ,
Always follow the basic recommendation of THE piston manufacturer , don't "generalize." Each and every aftermarket maker has their own view on skirt turning and shaping . plus "where" they want you to measure them at. I fell victim to that about 20 years ago when I got a set of Venolia pistons by measuring and clearancing  them like a JE. They scuffed from lack of clearance. Engine ruined. Lesson learned.
