Title: oil catch cans GDI engines not sure where to post this question

I see info that GDI engines should have a oil separator catch can installed in some of the early GDI engines due to carbon build up on the valves.  The catch cans are not inexpensive.  My question is can you use a remote oil filter set up with an oil filter attached to achieve the same goal, or will the oil filter cause a restriction defeating the purpose of the PCV system?

No. An oil filter would be way too restrictive. Catch cans are available from all the major speed shop retailers. Besides, one could easily make one up from an aluminum beer can, or a water can, Army type water can and more.
