I know there are tools available to split the cap from a connecting rod, but what is the best way to do it with a rod on a crankshaft?
I'm starting to dummy up an engine to measure piston deck height and was wondering what is the best technique to split the rod. These are Scat I beams and have rod bolts. I've done this before with rods that have studs and nuts, but not with bolts. I'm sure there has to be a simple method, but it's just not making itself obvious to my tiny brain.

Brass drift punch (rod) and/or a hard plastic mallet work - just a clean sharp blow usually breaks things apart without damage.

I usally back the bolts out a few threads and tap the heads of the bolt with a brass or fibre mallet. Then remove the bolts, remove the caps and push the rods out with the hammer handle.

Good idea to tap the heads of the bolts, why didn't I think of that? I'll give that a try.

A leather mallet, used often in woodworking. Can't damage a thing.

Close to the same thing here, I just use a rubber mallet. More bounce than a leather or fiber mallet but you shouldn't have to beat the crap out of it.
